Our verdict

The ergopouch Cocoon Swaddle Bag is a straightforward, well-made newborn swaddle that’s especially helpful in those exhausting early days when complicated wrapping techniques feel like too much effort. The zip-up design makes it quick and intuitive to use, and our tester Holly found it far easier than traditional blanket swaddling.

The soft organic cotton fabric feels high quality, and the option to use it with arms in or arms out adds flexibility as babies grow. The brand also focuses on suistainable materials, a bonus for many mum including Holly.

Like most swaddles, it’s a short-term product and you’ll need to choose the right TOG for the season - luckily, Ergopouch swaddles are available in a range of different TOGs from super lightweight 0.2 to cosy 3.5. At £32 it's on the pricey side compared to the Tommee Tippee Swaddle Bag (£25) and the Love To Dream Swaddle Up (£28), but if you want a simple, reliable swaddle with a choice of cute patterns to boot, this one does the job well.

How we tested the Ergopouch Cocoon Swaddle Bag

Holly used the Ergopouch during the early newborn period. “He was only a few days old when he first wore the bag,” she said.

How easy is the Ergopouch to use first time?

After washing the swaddle before first use, Holly found the Ergopouch simple to use first time. "It's super easy," she explained, "you just zip the baby into it." She pointed out that that this was one of the swaddle's best selling points, as it was a lot easier to use than traditional swaddles.

How well did your baby sleep using the Ergopouch?

Holly’s baby seemed comfortable and settled when wearing the swaddle. “He always slept well in it,” she said. "I've since used baby sleeping bags once he was too big for a swaddle and although it's hard to compare as he's been at different baby sleep stages, it does feel as though he slept better in a swaddle bag - we used the Love to Dream bags too."

How does the swaddling function work?

The swaddling is built into the bag’s design. Instead of wrapping fabric around your baby, their arms sit inside the swaddle and the zip secures everything in place. The swaddle also has plenty of stretch if the baby prefers their arms by their side rather than over their chest. As Holly put it, “You just zip their arms into the bag.”

How do you clean the Ergopouch?

Cleaning it was straightforward. “You just pop it in the washing machine,” Holly said, adding that she let it air dry afterwards.

How does the Ergopouch compare with other swaddles and sleeping bags?

Holly also used a Love to Dream swaddle bag and, as her baby grew, sleeping bags from Marks & Spencer. Because her baby was at different stages when using each product, she says it’s hard to compare sleep directly. However, she did notice a general pattern. “It does feel as though he slept better in swaddle bags than in sleep sacks.”

In terms of quality, she found them very similar. “The Ergopouch felt similar to the Love to Dream swaddles in terms of material quality,” she says. However, Ergopouch’s sustainability focus stood out. “I did like how organic and sustainable materials were used.”

What are the standout features of the Ergopouch?

For Holly, the flexibility was a big plus. “It’s great that they can be used as full swaddles and also with one or both arms out for that transition period,” she says. She also liked the design and brand ethos. “I loved the cute designs and the ethics of Ergopouch as well.”

Holly added that there wasn't anything she would change about the Ergopouch.

Does the Ergopouch represent good value for money?

Like many newborn sleep products, cost is a crucial consideration when you consider how fast newborns grow. "I find the price of all these different items can really add up, but for the Ergopouch, the price seems fairly average and it is great quality and sustainable so within that context I think it is good value for money, yes."

Bottom line

The Ergopouch Cocoon Swaddle Bag is a thoughtfully designed newborn swaddle that makes life easier during one of the most sleep-deprived stages of parenting. Its zip-up design removes the learning curve of traditional swaddling, and the soft organic fabric feels reassuringly high quality.

Parents who value sustainable materials will likely find it especially appealing, and the ability to transition to arms-out swaddling adds a bit more flexibility than some alternatives.

It’s not a product you’ll use for months on end. Very few swaddles are. But during those early newborn days when simple, reliable sleep solutions matter most, it does exactly what it’s meant to do.
