Our verdict

Choosing a mattress can feel as stressful as choosing a child’s name. It has to be a good fit, it has to last a long time and you can’t easily change it if you make the wrong choice.

Now that many of us buy our mattresses online without trying them first, knowing the best mattress for your needs is a good idea.

Our tester Daisy is a front sleeper and describes herself as “fussy” when it comes to finding a good mattress. Having previously had memory foam mattresses, she was keen to see if something else would suit her better at night, so she tested out the Coolflex® Hybrid Breeze Ortho Mattress.

“I'd never bought an orthopaedic mattress before because that sounded a bit gimmicky but I wanted something quite firm that still felt comfortable rather than rock hard - and ideally memory foam that wouldn’t get too warm in the night,” she said.

“I was also interested to see whether a hybrid mattress would feel more supportive than the memory foam mattresses I’ve had before that have felt a bit flabby. I’m a front sleeper and quite fussy about mattresses that sag, so I basically wanted something that would hold me up without making me feel like I was lying on a concrete floor.

Although Daisy was initially unsure about having a firm mattress, she quickly came to like the Coolflex’s resistance.

“I was slightly nervous when I saw it described as ‘firm’, because there’s firm and then there’s sleeping-on-the-floor firm, and when I first tried it, it felt quite hard, but as soon as I lay down on it I got used to it,” she explained.

“The top has enough give that you still get the lovely sinking into bed feeling, just without actually sinking very far. It's solid and substantial, which is what I was hoping for, but the thinnish layer of memory foam at the top of the mattress stops it feeling unforgiving. I feel held up by it rather than sinking into it. Some people might find it too firm, but I really like it.”

Over the month that she and her partner tested this mattress, Daisy felt well supported and said she wasn’t waking up stiff, although she didn’t notice a dramatic change in her back pain.

She said: “I haven’t noticed a dramatic change but I do feel very well supported on it and haven’t been waking up feeling stiff from the mattress…[I] think on balance it feels like a good choice for stiffness and aches.”

Another thing that impressed Daisy about the Coolflex® Hybrid Breeze Ortho Mattress was how undisturbed her sleep was when her partner moved around at night.

“It feels solid underneath you but there’s enough cushioning on top that it doesn’t feel uncomfortable,” she explained.

“I also share the bed with my partner and he moves around quite a bit, so I’ve appreciated not being bounced around every time he turns over!”

Overall, Daisy really liked this mattress despite her initial reservations about its firmness. One thing she found off-putting, though, was the ‘off-gassing’ smell when the mattress was first opened in her bedroom.

“There was a very strong smell when we first unwrapped it which reminded me of the smell inside a new car. I really dislike that smell - it feels quite toxic/unnatural - so I opened the windows and left the room to air overnight before actually sleeping on the mattress,” she told us.

“My partner was much less bothered by it than I was so I think I’m particularly sensitive to it. It faded overnight when the mattress aired out and then I didn't notice it once it had been given time to expand and ventilate.”

The mattress has an RRP of £600, but having now tested it, Daisy thinks it’s something she would willingly part with her own money for.

“It feels very substantial for the money and, assuming it continues to hold its shape as it has so far, I think it would justify the price,” she said.

“I probably wouldn’t have bought it completely blind because 'firm' is such a subjective word when it comes to mattresses, but having actually slept on it I would happily buy it again.”

What’s in the box?

The Coolflex® Hybrid Breeze Ortho Mattress arrives rolled up in plastic and expands once it’s removed from the packaging.

Delivery and set-up

The mattress arrived rolled and vacuum-packed, which impressed Daisy straight away:

“The clever bit is the way it arrives!”

“The box looked comically small compared with the mattress that eventually came out of it - a bit like one of those expanding sponge toys you put in water as a child. Getting the box upstairs was way easier than getting a normal king-size mattress upstairs would have been.”

She did warn others that the mattress expands quickly:

“There was a slightly alarming moment after cutting the plastic where it started growing at speed and we had to get out of the way!” she shared.

Once unrolled, Daisy left the Coolflex to expand and air overnight because of the strong ‘off-gassing’ smell.

“The smell was initially off-putting when it came out of the packaging because it was so strong, but after airing it I didn’t have any irritation or other problems with it,” Daisy said.

“I’m quite sensitive to synthetic weird smells and initially wondered if I’d made a terrible mistake, but after leaving the windows open overnight it faded very quickly.”

How comfortable and supportive is the Coolflex® Hybrid Breeze Ortho Mattress?

Having previously had memory foam mattresses with mixed results, Daisy wasn’t sure whether choosing a firm mattress would be a good option for her needs, but she quickly adapted to the mattress’s firmness.

“I had a good mattress before that I spent quite a lot of money on, although it wasn't designed specifically for orthopaedic support. It had become less supportive over time and had started to feel a bit tired and uneven with a dip where I slept,” she said.

“It feels solid and has kept its shape well. I’m particularly interested in this because I had a memory foam mattress years ago that was lovely at first and then slowly developed a sort of person-shaped trench. So far there’s absolutely no sign of that happening here. The combination of springs and foam also makes it feel more structurally substantial than all-foam mattresses I've had before.”

Is it good value for money?

This mattress has an RRP of £600 for the king-size option, which is considerably more than the price of some budget mattresses on the market.

However, as someone who has previously invested in expensive mattresses, Daisy thinks this is worth the price tag for the comfort and support it offers.

“It feels like a considerably more expensive mattress than it looks, I think,” she said.

“It’s thick and supportive. The combination of pocket springs and memory foam feels like a step up from a basic foam mattress.”

“At around the £500 mark it obviously isn’t budget but based on the quality and comfort so far I think the price feels reasonable. A mattress is also one of those things where I’m quite happy to spend a bit of money on it if it means I actually sleep well.”

Is the Coolflex® Hybrid Breeze Ortho Mattress good for keeping you cool at night?

One of the Coolflex’s features is its ‘cool gel memory foam’. According to the brand, it’s ‘infused with gel microbeads to regulate temperature, while also improving breathability’.

As someone who tends to sleep hot, Daisy didn’t find herself overheating during testing.

“I easily get too warm at night, and have had problems with previous memory foam mattresses so this was something I was interested in,” she shared.

“But I haven’t found myself overheating on it. It feels fairly normal - which is probably a good sign!”

Final verdict: is it worth it?

Daisy’s verdict is straightforward: if you’re used to memory foam mattresses but want something with a bit more support, she thinks the Coolflex is worth considering.

“I’ve been really pleased with it. It feels supportive, solid and comfortable, and I like the balance between a firm spring mattress and the softer memory foam layer on top,” she said.

“It basically feels like a nice halfway house between a traditional sprung mattress and memory foam, which turns out to be exactly what I wanted.”

Daisy also liked the design:

“Sometimes I'm a bit disappointed by how mattresses look without the sheets on - they often look quite depressing - but I actually really like the monochrome geometric shapes on the top of this mattress,” she explained.

“Obviously nobody buys a mattress for its looks, given that you immediately cover it in a fitted sheet, but it does make it feel a bit less utilitarian.”

Even unpacking it provided some unexpected entertainment:

Daisy said: “The delivery was also way more entertaining than I expected. It arrived rolled and vacuum packed in a box that looked comically small, and then expanded enormously once we opened it.”
