Best fan heater

The cold and grey winter mornings have returned, and if you’re working from home, an electric heater is just the ticket to heat up a room fast - and the best fan heaters are the fastest they come.

As tempting as it may be to turn up the thermostat, boosting your central heating comes at a cost. Just like a heated throw heats just the person rather than your entire home, a portable fan heater is a quick and effective way to warm a single room. Compact and efficient, they deliver a welcome blast of hot air exactly where you need it, helping create warm and comfortable surroundings without wasting unnecessary energy.

To bring you our recommendations on the best fan heaters you can buy today, we first tapped into the tried and tested views of Mumsnet users, learning more about the models they’ve used in their own homes and would happily recommend to others. By combining their views with consumer feedback and the verdicts of industry experts, we’re confident we've found the best options for every home and budget.

1

Best fan heater overall

Dimplex Compact 3KW Electric Fan Heater

What we like
  • Two heat settings and a cool blow function

  • Lightweight and portable design with a carry handle

  • Safety cut out

  • Powerful option for larger rooms

What we don't like
  • Some reviewers found it quite noisy on the highest setting

  • Costly per hour on the highest setting; however, the thermostat cuts power when the temperature is reached.

Key specs

Price on writing: £47 | Size: H11.4 x W25.3 x D24.5cm | Weight: 1.2kg | Cost per hour: Up to 79p per hour | Timer: No | Heater output: 1KW or 3KW

Our verdict

From trusted brand Dimplex, the affordable Compact 3KW Electric Fan Heater makes a great all-rounder for most households. A portable design with a built-in carry handle, it’s easy to unplug and take with you if you move rooms throughout the day.

This model has a choice of two easy-to-operate heat settings, with a powerful 3KW maximum that can make your room toasty in minutes. Although some reviewers found it noisy on the highest settings, this powerful design is capable of heating even larger rooms (up to 25 square meters).

There’s no timer on this model; however, the adjustable thermostat is a welcome addition, as it helps avoid energy waste by shutting off the fans automatically when the room reaches the desired temperature.

As well as frost protection for the coldest rooms, we love that this fan heater has overheat protection and a safety cut-out for peace of mind. When the seasons change, the Dimplex can even be used to blow cool air, helping to make your surroundings more comfortable, whatever the weather.

Best budget fan heater

Beldray Electric Flatbed Fan Heater

What we like
  • Budget-friendly price tag

  • Compact design can be used upright or laid flat

  • Heat and cool functions

What we don't like
  • Only recommended for use on hard floors

  • No timer

Key specs

Price on writing: £19 | Size: H25 x W12.2 x D25cm | Weight: 1.27kg | Cost per hour: Approx 53p per hour | Timer: No | Heater output: 2KW

Our verdict

If you're working from your box room or simply heating a smaller space, the budget-friendly Beldray Flatbed Fan Heater is a great choice, offering excellent value for money.

While it’s not quite as powerful as the Dimplex above, it heats up quickly and couldn’t be easier to use, with two heat settings, a cool air function and an adjustable thermostat to help maintain your perfect temperature.

Only marginally heavier than our top pick, we love the carry handle and dual position design of the Beldray, allowing you to lie it flat or stand it upright to make the most of your space. It is worth highlighting, however, that it’s only suitable for use on hard floors – so you’ll need to keep away from your carpets.

Best compact fan heater

De'Longhi Capsule HFX30C18.IW Ceramic Fan Heater

What we like
  • Stylish and portable design

  • Ceramic element

  • Tip-over protection

What we don't like
  • Heat diminishes rapidly once the power is turned off

  • No timer

Key specs

Price on writing: £52 | Size: H10.98 x W‎7.52 x D4.29cm | Weight: 1.3kg | Cost per hour: 47p per hour | Timer: No | Heater output: 900W or 1.8KW

Our verdict

Whether you’re using it in a bedroom, home office or living space, there’s something instantly charming about the retro-style De’Longhi Capsule Fan Heater. A stylish design with a compact footprint and robust carry handle, it’s quick and easy to transport between rooms.

The ceramic element heats up quickly before self-regulating, helping to maintain a constant, comfortable temperature in the colder parts of your home. It’s a 1.8KW energy-efficient option that has low running costs over long periods; however, you will notice the temperature dip quite rapidly once the heater is turned off.

Suitable for all seasons, we love how the Anti-Frost feature prevents the temperature in your home from falling below 5°C during winter. When the temperatures rise in summer, simply switch to ventilation to generate a refreshing breeze.

Tested by Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill: Read our full Dyson Hot+Cool HF1 review

With its iconic design, the Dyson Hot+Cool Smart Fan makes a stylish addition to your bedroom or home office. While its high price tag makes it a significant investment, it's suitable for use all year round, capable of both heating and cooling your home depending on the season.

Using the smart Dyson app or handy remote control, you can easily adjust the temperature and speed settings, ranging from a directed warm breeze to a more powerful oscillating blast of heat. Alternatively, you can set a timer for up to 8 hours to cover the bulk of your day.

A bladeless design, combined with tilt-over protection, makes the Dyson safe to use around children and pets. However, it’s large and heavy – far less portable than the compact models above.

Reviewed by Mumsnet editor Rebecca Roberts: Read our in-depth Vortex Air Cleanse Air Purifier review

If you’re a household with allergies, the 3-in-1 Vortex Cleanse is undoubtedly worth considering. A blade-free 3-in-1 design available in a choice of 8 colours, this stylish appliance can efficiently heat, cool and purify your surroundings.

As a hay fever sufferer, our tester Rebecca was pleasantly surprised when using the purifier during the summer, noticing a noticeable easing of her stuffy nose and congestion. While it needs replacing around every six months, the built-in HEPA filter claims to capture up to 99.97% of allergens, dust, and bacteria – a valuable addition for family members with allergies, asthma, or skin conditions.

Thanks to the wireless remote, Rebecca also found the Vortex very easy to use, with 10 speed settings and 70-degree oscillation to help direct just the right level of cooling or warming breeze. Thanks to the built-in timer, you can sit back and relax, keeping those toes toasty warm without needing multiple pairs of socks.

6

Best tower fan heater

LOGIK L20CTH23 Portable Hot & Cool Ceramic Fan Heater

What we like
  • Affordable price tag

  • Powerful – heats up quickly

  • Cooling and heating modes

  • Super simple controls

  • Relatively quiet for a tower heater

What we don't like
  • No timer

  • No remote control

Key specs

Price on writing: £39 | Size: H56.7 x W19 x D16.7cm | Weight: 1.66kg | Cost per hour: Approximately 51p per hour | Timer: No | Heater output: 2KW

Our verdict

If you’re seeking a less obtrusive fan heater you can easily stash into the corner of your room, the affordable Logik Hot & Cool Fan heater could be a great fit.

While there are no fancy features like timers or remote controls, this powerful 2-in-1 model is simple to use, featuring a straightforward dial to select between cooling mode and two fixed-speed heat settings. Rather than one focused blast of heat, the tall, oscillating design can evenly heat your entire space.

Best of all, the ceramic design heats up extremely quickly, although it cools fairly quickly once the power is switched off.

Our only quibble? While the overheat protection is reassuring, this model doesn’t offer a full tip-over cutout – something to be aware of if you have accident-prone kids or pets.

Are fan heaters energy-efficient?

While fan heaters heat up quickly, they’re generally less energy-efficient than other heaters, such as oil-filled radiators, especially when used to provide warmth over long periods. Fan heaters are best for giving quick and brief boosts of heat, quickly warming up or removing the chill from small areas.

The cost of running a fan heater depends on its wattage and the duration of use. According to consumer champions, Which?, most fan heaters range between 51p and 80p an hour on their highest setting.

For the most energy-efficient use, consider fan heaters equipped with thermostats. Rather than running at a fixed speed until manually turned off, these models will automatically turn off once the room reaches the desired temperature and then kick back in if the room starts to cool down.

Are fan heaters safe?

Fan heaters are generally safe as long as they are used correctly. Here are some things to consider:

  • Always check the instructions before use.

  • Keep the fan heater at least one metre away from flammable fabrics such as curtains and upholstery.

  • Do not leave a fan heater unattended

  • Do not use with extension leads

  • If you have children or pets, look for models with tip-over protection – this will automatically cut the power if the unit is accidentally knocked over.

  • Most modern fan heaters also offer overheat protection for peace of mind.

Can you sleep with a fan heater on?

While you technically can use a fan heater overnight, some models are more suitable (and appropriate) for sleep, with designated sleep modes that lower the sound and fan speeds.

In addition to safety considerations such as tip-over and overheat protection mentioned above, a fan with a thermostat is best, turning on only when required.
