I think a few of us are curious as to whether you’re homophobic @britindubai .

Why do you hope none of your DC are gay? If it turns out they are will you leave Dubai?

Have the giant Sheikh Mo images aged at all now that he’s heading for eighty? He’s hovered around 55 in photos for decades.

Do you wash your hair in bottled water? (When I lived there a lot of people had hair loss issues from showering in only partially desalinated water.)

Are the ‘Barracuda bandits’ still going strong (extortion racket that involved following cars with Dubai plates whose drivers had purchased alcohol in Umm Al Quwain until they had crossed into Sharjah, which is a dry emirate, orchestrating a minor traffic incident and extorting money by threatening to report to the authorities)?

Are prostitutes still as much a feature of hotel ‘Ladies Nights’? Mostly Chinese and Russian in my day, but that may have changed.

Does the local rag (whose name escapes me — not The International, maybe Gulf News or the other one?) still publish photos of the dead bodies of unidentified construction workers in order to identify them? The frequency of it absolutely horrified me when we lived there. There was a spate of suicides, apparently because so many companies withheld wages for months years, that some workers felt the only way to get money home to their families was to step in front of a car, so that compensation would be paid.

I mean, you’d hope that the much-talked-of improvements would mean this no longer happens, but it was one of my first memories.

Any rumours doing the rounds? What strikes me now, looking back, is how many of what we heard as rumours or urban legends when we lived there later turned out to be true, like the kidnap and detention of Sheikha Shamsa and Sheikha Latifa, because the press is so heavily censored (and self-censored) that nothing at all critical of Sheikh Mo can be published.

I’d still be interested in your take on any of these, OP — mostly not political, just daily life stuff.

scoobysnaxx · 20/10/2026 09:53

@MyKindHiker@Yetanotherone12totally agree. Disgusting attitude isn’t it.

Extradition if the shit really hits the fan in the war?

Ok but I don’t need the UK government to help me

Sorry to disappoint and it is indeed a sad state of affairs but let’s not be disillusioned by this, it is happening world wide

"I am happy to tolerate murder, because it's legalised in a particular country" because it happens worldwide, doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Why does slavery get a free pass?

We have slavery in the UK, but it's not socially tolerated and if you are found doing it you get arrested and prosecuted.

What is being said here is, it's ok because everyone's at it and these people are rich so it's fine.

I mean it's an 'opinion'... And in defence of the OP whether you legally could oppose this position from the UAE on MN without the risk of arrest is also another interesting question.

ExpressCheckout · 20/10/2026 09:55

Well, @britindubai, given your latent, casual homophobia, and obvious contempt for immigrants (oh, the irony), I'm quite pleased that you've left the UK. Have you got rid of your UK passport yet? Oh, there's a dilemma for you.

No, it’s not. You are disillusioned. But so are many of the people living in Dubai, so you’re in good company.

As an elderly gay friend of mine puts it: even in today's world, its still easier to be straight

As a top rate tax payer and not seeing much back for what is put into the system I can hand on heart say I have no issue keeping 100% of it.

You are talking about the UK right? A society with a failing health system, immigration problems, cost of living crisis and lack of defence system - honestly tired of paying into that for now!

So what happens when you're in the UK on hol and need a doctor do you pay privately? What about A&E as there obviously isn't a private service.

When I was young and stupid I worked in the ME, saved up for a house etc. It was only later I regretted my tax dodging life. Tax free but obviously using all services when home.

Imo when in ME countries I think ex pats should have to pay some kind of insurance in case they need A&E or whatever when in the UK, do you agree?

As an aside Dubai is not safe. Muggings etc low as penalties are severe but if you upset the wrong person you'd get kicked out. Not sure if all the bling is worth that very insecure and superficial existence tbh.

Starlia · 20/10/2026 09:58

lol, ask me anything, except hard questions because then I’ll get defensive and casually
homophobic, followed by displaying a blatant disregard for the ‘poors’.

The AMA about Dubai have been done many times. What's your aim with this one? Is it to reassure people after the attacks subsequent to the war with Iran?.

The UAE is losing at least 10% GDP this year due to the current situation. If it gets worse it's facing economic catastrophy. Let not beat about the bush here. This is already a significant economic disaster for UAE.

If you are a Brit with a mortgage in Dubai, you may be unable to leave at this point. You are unlikely to be able to sell up. If have debt so legally may be prevented from leaving if the authorities think you are at risk of defaulting.

That's interesting, I didn't know that, thanks

The OP legally can't answer the hard questions without being at risk of arrest in they are in UAE.

We need to keep reminding ourselves of this point and why this AMA is farcial from the outset.

Puppylucky · 20/10/2026 08:59

Sorry that's absolute nonsense and just reinforces @RedToothBrush 's point. I also lived in Dubai for two years and you are being slightly disingenuous about the labour situation (understandably given the reporting restrictions in the region). Workers have theoretical protection against outside work in high temperatures but in reality the authorities just lie about the actual temperature. It was very common to see workers trying to hide from the sun in the most extreme heat. The labour camps are like barracks (we used to go there to share Iftar meals with the workers) and workers are usually deprived of their passports. The passport holding thing also isn't restricted to labourers by the way. I met a few Europeans in office type jobs whose employers were holding their passports.
I left as I couldn't ignore the harsher realities of life in Dubai and just "skate over things" as you are doing.

That does sound awful, I haven’t witnessed this so I am only giving my opinion.

I hope you are enjoying a better life now

Hopefully not

Why? Because of the bigoted attitudes towards gay people in Dubai? Then why expose your kids to that, especially if one or some might be gay?

Barnabyrue · 20/10/2026 10:02

Is there anything you miss about the UK? Do you ever find Dubai rather plasticky and fake?

Especially when it was heavily twisted in the UK media.

Meaning? Or are you prevented from telling us?

The British media took it all out of context with their click bait headlines portraying Dubai was being blown up

Ironic given you’re using the same ‘media headlines’ to claim the UK is ‘on its knees’!

You refer to the "British media" as if it were a hive mind. You do understand this there are many different news outlets with different priorities and editorial policies?
Are you saying that the BBC, C4 and the Guardian (for example). reported incorrectly?

britindubai · 20/10/2026 10:07

tardive · 20/10/2026 09:01

So you're OK with homosexuality being a crime because "The UAE is a Muslim country, why on earth would they support something that goes against their religion?"

But you wear shorts and vest top on the school run and presumably go to bars and restaurants where alcohol is being served?

It does sound morally wrong when you put it like that but it is what they created and allow

Do you have a Highlife Dubai print yet by my sister? 😅
