I really didn’t think that needed explaining. 🙄

Am I missing something here

He pays the highest rate of tax if we live in the UK, what do the state provide exactly that we don’t contribute to?

A state school? A healthcare system - I can’t even get a doctor’s appointment within 2 weeks.

We pay for a private dentist - finding a dentist on the NHS is like finding hens teeth! pay for private healthcare, what other services are we adequately provided with?

We live in an affluent area and have been targeted.

There have been many instances of children being hurt.

London is edgy, lots of homeless and weirdos out and about as there are in most major cities across the UK - adding to the point above

Children snatched from the street where they are walking with their parent

And you’ve swapped ‘edgy weirdos’ and homeless people for a dictatorship where the dictator has kidnapped and imprisoned two of his daughters, in a state-sanctioned abduction, as ruled by the UK High Court, and whose ex-wife fled the country in fear of her life after a campaign of intimidation, phone-hacking and threats, and the further threat of abducting their children from the UK and forcibly marrying them in the UAE.

You don’t have to pay for private healthcare in the UK. It’s a choice.

So what happens if you divorce or your marriage end as 50% of them do?

Do they? Did yours?

There are lots of places in the UK that a) aren't London b) also aren't a city.

Amazingly.

And? Your point is here?

Why do you even need to personally benefit and 'get stuff out'?

Your disconnection and lack of social responsibility and sense of community benefit and value is all about the ££££...

After 5 or 6 years in Dubai, would you consider moving to one of your other homes in Europe, given your concerns about the uk? (Although the situation in France, at present, doesnt look great).
Would you have a decent lifestyle in Switzerland for example?

A lot of goading here isn’t there to get my responses.

I gave my response as to why I’m not agreeing where a large amount of our hard earned money goes to in the UK through taxes…..it’s always been a take from the rich and give to the poor approach and that gap has widened significantly with a lot more thrown in just for good measure.

Why should we create the life we have and give most of it to those who can’t be arsed to help themselves.

Do you truly believe all (or any!) of the tax generated in the UK is going back into society and helping in the right areas……the UK is a country in debt!

Quite possibly yes and Switzerland would be top choice for sure

And I'm not going for your baiting either.

You make it sound like your DH is the only person who works hard and you should be entitled to everything and you have no responsibility to anyone else.

We have a very different attitude to taxation and social responsibility that's for sure...

You dont watch GB news? You sure sound like you do!

I didn’t mean for it to come across that way, my husband is not the only one that works hard….he just gets paid for what he does.

I honestly don’t watch GB news, should I?

People who are doing jobs that we need like running public services, education, healthcare, care work and emptying the bins are not parasites. They are doing useful jobs that contribute to society, regardless of tax bracket. Not everyone can be a high earner, and it doesn't make you a better person. People can still work hard and be paid a lot less.

You aren't actually contributing tax or anything financially anymore anyway, as you aren't working. There's nothing wrong with being a SAHM, I've been one, but if we follow your rationale, only high earners matter and you aren't one anymore.

non of my friends or family have any live in home help in the UK.

We are up around 6am to get the children ready for school, do their breakfast, lunch boxes, some reading. School starts at 7:30.

Husband and I will spend some time together, have a coffee, chat, walk etc

9am I do my workout

10am until midday I’ll do the house chores, laundry, cleaning etc

Have a shower, lunch, do some life admin before picking the children up from school at 2:30pm

The afternoons vary between chilling at home, play dates, after school clubs, sports team training, and swimming mostly

Dinner around 6pm - husband often home by this time to join us

Bath and bedtime starts at 7:30pm, asleep for 8:30pm and we are not far behind, a quick catch up, Netflix show and often in bed by 10pm at the latest!

Cleaners don’t have to live in. Or do they in Dubai?

Are you suggesting my husband is somehow different? Genuinely curious.

He's happy to pay tax and sees social benefits to it.

Indeed a lot of the issue he sees is people on higher incomes in his industry who effectively pay less % tax on earnings than people on lower incomes because they are self employed and can pay an accountant and how this is creating a wealth gap and placing an unfair and distortionate tax burden on those on middle and low incomes. The whole thing ends up disincentivicing. But it's not about work ethic or contribution to society by earning more.

When people do this, it serves to distort the whole taxation system and create unfairness all round. And increase inequality whilst removing basic services at need which increases crime levels.

A flat rate tax on everyone would be much fairer and harder to argue against and dodge tax.

But you live in Dubai so...

You were comparing my husband to me no?

Yes that is perhaps an issue with such loopholes but being self employed they don’t have the security, safety or benefits of being employed by a company. People will take what they are allowed to so it’s not an easy solution of one size fits all

How old are your children o/p?

have you thought what might happen when they get older and have boyfriends/girlfriends?

even if they aren’t gay, one mistake and they could end up in prison.

EarthlyNightshade · 20/10/2026 19:34

britindubai · 20/10/2026 17:00

To me so far those problems in Dubai don’t exist

I can leave my car out and not fear it getting stolen overnight

I can leave my house door unlocked and I wont get burgled or attacked if I’m home

I can walk around anywhere at anytime and feel safe, my bag/phone/watch won’t get taken off me

My children can live freely here, they can be a few steps ahead of me and I don’t fear them being snatched or hurt

Yes Dubai has negatives like anywhere else but at the moment the positives far outweigh the UK.

UK will always be home though but it’s changed a lot and not necessarily for the better…..in my opinion

Your children can be openly gay in the UK without too much worry.

It doesn't sound from this thread that you are very open to that possibility yourself anyway.

No but it was very kind of you to help @britindubai out.

I still don't think she understood your question.

@britindubai We are asking how much of your husband's Dubai salary is spent on buying, in Dubai, the services that would be provided by the state in the UK. Not for when you're back in the UK, but for when your family is at home in Dubai.

To clarify with an example - in the UK I pay tax and my children go to a state school, no fee. We get NHS healthcare, no fee etc.

If I move to Dubai I pay no tax but have to buy those services on the open market. How much does that cost your husband - for those services, in Dubai, not the UK?

We're trying to work out how that spend compares with tax.
