How old are your children o/p?

have you thought what might happen when they get older and have boyfriends/girlfriends?

even if they aren’t gay, one mistake and they could end up in prison.

They are below the age of 8. We quite possibly won’t be in Dubai when they are older. What kind of mistakes are you thinking that will put anyone in prison?

LeastOfMyWorries · 20/10/2026 19:40

Probably thinking about the 18YO lad who went to prison for having (fully consented) sex with a 17YO

Oh, perhaps the OP’s children will grow up to be gay communists.

I still don't think she understood your question.

@britindubai We are asking how much of your husband's Dubai salary is spent on buying, in Dubai, the services that would be provided by the state in the UK. Not for when you're back in the UK, but for when your family is at home in Dubai.

To clarify with an example - in the UK I pay tax and my children go to a state school, no fee. We get NHS healthcare, no fee etc.

If I move to Dubai I pay no tax but have to buy those services on the open market. How much does that cost your husband - for those services, in Dubai, not the UK?

We're trying to work out how that spend compares with tax.

Oh ok so schooling is £25k per year

All healthcare is covered by husbands employer

EarthlyNightshade · 20/10/2026 19:34

Your children can be openly gay in the UK without too much worry.

It doesn't sound from this thread that you are very open to that possibility yourself anyway.

Not relevant to me right now

Just want to note that op is expat, everyonr is calling themselves expats or residents and it doesn't matter where they are from. Everyone is there for work. Immigrant suggests long term and considering visa and basically impossible residency, everyone is expat ot resident. Tbh even people who have been there decade don't call themselves immigrants. None of my, now former, European, ME, Asian and African colleagues have ever refered to themselves, nor were they ever refered to as immigrants. Including people in news.

I’m quite shocked that o/p didn’t connect the dots.

massive case, British lad, Embassy involved, shortly before o/p went out there….

did you do any research about the country before you went, O/p? Or was it just ooh money, let’s go?

Why are there no “expats” in the uk then? Only immigrants?

There are though. Some people use that term. It's just not used as widely. I am immigrant in UK, I was expact in UAE. Different situations.

Nuthatchtreelover · 20/10/2026 20:31

What do you think about the environmental impact of creating Dubai city in a desert?

Waitingfordoggo · 20/10/2026 20:35

TwoFrogsOnTheSameLilyPad · 20/10/2026 16:04

Hilarious that OP’s own accounts of life are dismissed with posters preferring to believe the BBC, and then scolding the OP for believing news outlets regarding life in the UK

Yes, it’s a bit like how the OP insists the streets of the UK are wildly dangerous despite not living here most of the time and planning to return here to live in the future 😂

Puppylucky · 20/10/2026 20:38

Schnapps00 · 20/10/2026 10:08

Do you have a Highlife Dubai print yet by my sister? 😅

Oh wow @Schnapps00 ! I bought the whole set of those prints when we lived there! I just donated most of them as lovely as they are they kind of lose relevance when you leave. Kept the Dubai Marina one though as that's where we lived. Your sister is very talented!!

Waitingfordoggo · 20/10/2026 20:45

britindubai · 20/10/2026 17:43

Now we are getting into the juicy questions, I’m surprised it’s taken this long for it to be asked!

I won’t give the exact number but it’s 7 figures

You’ve been gagging for that question 😂

So live in nanny from Philippines is called an expat? Or the construction workers who are more like modern slaves, are they expats?

The streets miraculously become safe during the summer months she spends here

Maybe she goes about in an armoured car.

You can get a decent GWagon for a mill.

Waitingfordoggo · 20/10/2026 21:28

This has been an entertaining thread. My favourite bit was where the OP claimed she isn’t materialistic, just after telling us about her husband’s salary, their many overseas properties and the ‘millionaires and billionaires’ they hang out with. (Most billionaires are absolute rotters, if you look at the examples. Except JKR obviously, but I gather she is no longer a billionaire because she keeps giving so much of her cash to good causes).

Overall, I think @RedToothBrush is probably right in her theories about this thread.

Waitingfordoggo · 20/10/2026 21:33

Oooh, have you been to the Treacle Market @mumzof4x ? We stayed with friends in Congelton recently and I heard about the market and was REALLY excited because I took it very literally and thought it would all be treacle related products. I was disappointed to hear that wasn’t the case, but I still plan to go to the market the next time we’re up there.

If I go to Alderley Edge, are there any traces left of the landscape of The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, or is it more footballer-y?

toiletpaperthief · 20/10/2026 21:46

britindubai · 20/10/2026 17:28

We live in an affluent area and have been targeted.

There have been many instances of children being hurt.

London is edgy, lots of homeless and weirdos out and about as there are in most major cities across the UK - adding to the point above

Tax paying London weirdo says "hi!" 👋
