Would you be able to do that if you didn’t live in a gated community? Are poorer workers in Dubai as safe?

@sittingonabeach

You can leave your bag on a table, walk away and it will still be there when you get back. Which I found very strange at first. Now I need to remember not to leave my belongings when I’m elsewhere!

I don’t live in a gated community. Like any cities, there are cheaper areas to live.

I don’t wash my hair in bottled water and don’t know anyone who does anymore. Some people fit filters to their shower heads but I’ve never felt the need to!

No to those sort of images in the local media - I do remember them though!

And the Baracuda bandits are no more! No real need to do a Baracuda run anymore as it’s become a lot cheaper to buy from alcohol stores (MMI, A&E) and now free to get a licence. We order on the MMI app and get drinks delivered to our door in under 2 hours.

I’ve been here 16 years and seen lots of changes - lots of the quirks of previous years are no more!

Thanks I missed this one

I agree, I also don’t use bottled water nor have a filter

I do have a filter, only because the water made my skin really dry.

So he earns millions and you don’t have a cleaner, nanny etc?

No I don’t need one, believe it or not I enjoy bringing up my own children and I like cleaning.

Why do so many of you struggle with this. I’m from the UK, it’s not the norm to have home help in this form

What does a typical day look like?

@DorsetKnobBiscuit

I am a single woman in Dubai who works. Not sure how interesting it would be, but happy to answer any questions.

Thank you!

I wonder how pay compares with the UK? Is equality taken seriously? How's the work life balance? What percentage of managers are women? Does it seem like a place where you could settle and have a long term career? Do you like it better than working in your previous country?

Edited to add - sorry, just read that back and it's A Lot!

britindubai · 20/10/2026 18:06

BIossomtoes · 20/10/2026 17:52

And how much is education, healthcare and other services costing him? The ones funded by taxation in the UK.

Why would they be funded by the UK

we don’t live in the UK?

britindubai · 20/10/2026 17:43

Now we are getting into the juicy questions, I’m surprised it’s taken this long for it to be asked!

I won’t give the exact number but it’s 7 figures

Is he self employed?

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2026 18:11

britindubai · 20/10/2026 17:59

I can promise you I am not employed at all to promote Dubai, I have mentioned some of the negatives on here.

What is it you really want to know?

Yes we are wealthy but I don’t feel I have bragged about anything other than answering questions honestly.

It’s being perceived that we swan around in high end supercars, dripping in designer clothes/bags and living a glitzy life as that is how most people see Dubai. We are not materialistic at all and actually live a very normal life out here

You have. You don't even realise you've done it.

And yeah. I'm just not buying this honesty shite.

You aren't there long term enough for me to take a lot of it seriously. And your comments about the media (both in the UK and elsewhere) being misleading are piss funny.

Meh.

I don't want you to sell me tell me anything. You've already given a certain impression you now can't undo. That's the problem.

Unfortunately the accusations of jealousy really had quite the opposite affect.

I'm grateful for what I have. I value what I have.

On a list of places I could go and live for a more aspirational life or a better quality of life I don't think I'd even consider Dubai. And that's Dubai's real problem at this point and what is really really going to hurt it and the people living there over the next couple of years even if things with Iran don't kick off badly and it's 'only a few missiles that have landed in residential areas'.

I have far more sympathy for residents of Dubai who have genuinely made it their long term home and don't have this need to prove they've made an amazing decision in living there.

sittingonabeach · 20/10/2026 18:15

How safe would you feel if you got accused of something and had to be involved with the authorities?

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 20/10/2026 18:16

britindubai · 20/10/2026 18:06

I think @Blossomtoes meant that if you were in the UK the state would provide education, healthcare and other services but hat in Dubai he has to pay for that for you all.

PropertyD · 20/10/2026 18:18

Do you work?

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 20/10/2026 18:18

Yes we are wealthy but I don’t feel I have bragged about anything other than answering questions honestly.

Telling people they would weep if they saw your bank account is pretty self congratulatory and assumes so much about other people without any evidence.

Edited

I work for a law firm so I would say it’s a better firm to work for and I can’t comment on how local firms, or other firms operate. A company is registered under particular zone and different zones have different rules and also labour laws I believe. I’ll answer the ones I can:

I wonder how pay compares with the UK? I earn about 20,000 a year more here but aside from not paying tax, my rent, living costs are cheaper and I can save about half of my salary.

Is equality taken seriously? I think where I work it is, can’t comment on other firms.

How's the work life balance? I work slightly longer hours but nothing worse than previous jobs in other countries.

What percentage of managers are women? I’m not sure but because of the nature of the firm I think it would be similar to elsewhere/ the UK.

Does it seem like a place where you could settle and have a long term career? My job isn’t really one where I could progress so I can’t really comment on that.

Do you like it better than working in your previous country? I’m from the UK but moved here from somewhere else. It has its positives and negatives from the previous country I lived in.

PropertyD · 20/10/2026 18:18

Do you work?

She doesn't. She's a SAHM who likes cleaning.

PropertyD · 20/10/2026 18:20

Ok so,don’t you feel vulnerable relying on a man to support you?

What does a typical day look like?

non of my friends or family have any live in home help in the UK.

We are up around 6am to get the children ready for school, do their breakfast, lunch boxes, some reading. School starts at 7:30.

Husband and I will spend some time together, have a coffee, chat, walk etc

9am I do my workout

10am until midday I’ll do the house chores, laundry, cleaning etc

Have a shower, lunch, do some life admin before picking the children up from school at 2:30pm

The afternoons vary between chilling at home, play dates, after school clubs, sports team training, and swimming mostly

Dinner around 6pm - husband often home by this time to join us

Bath and bedtime starts at 7:30pm, asleep for 8:30pm and we are not far behind, a quick catch up, Netflix show and often in bed by 10pm at the latest!

To me so far those problems in Dubai don’t exist

I can leave my car out and not fear it getting stolen overnight

I can leave my house door unlocked and I wont get burgled or attacked if I’m home

I can walk around anywhere at anytime and feel safe, my bag/phone/watch won’t get taken off me

My children can live freely here, they can be a few steps ahead of me and I don’t fear them being snatched or hurt

Yes Dubai has negatives like anywhere else but at the moment the positives far outweigh the UK.

UK will always be home though but it’s changed a lot and not necessarily for the better…..in my opinion

I live in the UK and I don't worry about those things.

I still don't understand why you are coming back then? If it is so awful. Why not move elsewhere? As you can't get citizenship in the UAE.

I don't think OP is being truthful. 🤣

Really who cares? Made up shit usually makes for a more interesting thread!

Do we need to poke holes through everything? Better to accept that a man in his mid-30s was earning £1 million + in the UK working “in energy” and built up a global property portfolio despite being taxed up to his eyeballs. That way, the more interesting discussion of what it’s like living somewhere can take place?

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 20/10/2026 18:23

Are you a poor worker eg live in cleaner or a professional? Are attitudes the same towards everyone?

@sittingonabeach

I’m in a professional role. I treat everyone the same and try and tip the lower paid workers and help where I can. Sadly, a lot of people here are entitled and some people are rude to the lower paid workers - however, you get that everywhere, but I think the wealth here makes It worse.

PropertyD · 20/10/2026 18:24

So what happens if you divorce or your marriage end as 50% of them do?
