Just that really had enough, the last 6 years have been hell, he’s disrespectful, rude, always threatens to put me on my ass, doesn’t listen to me, do as he is told, eats all the food and has no care about anyone else, he doesn’t go to school is home tutored twice a week. He has ADHD but I’m just done with it all, he refuses his meds, won’t go to his appointments, sleeps all day and is awake all night. I tried putting rules and boundaries in place and he constantly pushes them, he’s a bad influence on his siblings they are becoming like him and I’m a single mum and really struggling. He doesn’t go out, doesn’t want to do anything but play games all day every day, he spends money on my card for his games without my permission, I’ve had this for the last 6 years and I just can’t do it anymore, he is affecting my mental health and I’m constantly exhausted, he kicks off and smashes things, he tries to over power my parenting when I try and tell his siblings off or put rules in place. I don’t want him here anymore. What do I do? How do I get him out? I’m actually scared he’s going to hit me and then his siblings think it’s ok, he’s already attacked me before. I feel like I have to walk on egg shells. This isn’t a life.

Do not comment if you haven’t got anything nice to say. This isn’t even the half of what I’ve had to put up with the last 6 years!!

When he assaults his brothers ring the police. Social services can’t ignore it then.

Lovelyworld1 · 03/09/2026 10:46

It’s not daft to do this.
If he kicks off call the police
Have back up in the house
prepare for him kicking off
i think it’s clueless to just put up with it
He won’t change unless he’s made to change

Exactly this. People would rather she kick a 16yr old boy who already is massively suffering out of his home than turn off the WiFi and take away his games console. We are so brainwashed by big tech. You really don’t think it’s worth a try? Be prepared to call the police if he kicks off. Call them every single time.

Hi OP call them again. Tell them you have reached crisis point and you will be forced to make your 16 yr old essentially homeless if they do not intervene.
They have a duty of care to your son as he will be homeless at 16.
I feel for you I really do my own son has ADHD I know how hard this is. X

My DS has ADHD too and although he's older now and far more settled down I can still remember the dreadful days when he wouldn't do a damn thing I asked him to do and was up almost all night but still up all day too getting by on 3-4 hours sleep at most. Try SS again and as pp said tell them you are at crisis point and making him homeless. They have a statutory duty to help get his housed. You could tell him he could come for a meal once a week.

Alltheworries

Well done for getting help for your child and getting them.out of the house. You suggested the GP. That does sound like a good idea. Can you say what was the crucial factor in getting action fir your child.

5MinuteArgument · 03/09/2026 10:59

What about your daughter's dad, OP? His daughter is being subjected to a negative household environment. Can he help at all?

AstonCanKissMyArse · 03/09/2026 10:59

No advice to add to the excellent suggestion by PP of writing to your head of children's services, but I wanted to send support, this all sounds horrendous for you.

It may be worth going to the GP yourself and telling them how its impacting the little ones and asking them directly to help you. Get your situation on record with as many people as you possibly can.

You could ask the GP to make a MASH safeguarding referral for you (or make one yourself, there will be a form on your local council website).

The idea of the MASH hub is they can draw together safeguarding info from all different places and spot patterns and offer help. Good luck.

I’m sure you won’t do this but if it were me I’d take away his games console and any screens, replace his phone with a brick, give him £10 cash every week to buy drinks or whatever and call the police each and every time he gets violent. Also tell him he is loved. I do genuine sympathise with you but sometimes the answer is staring you in the face.

What’s the answer then? Do all this when he already gets aggressive and abusive and threatens me and smashes up my home? Isn’t this just fuelling the fire?

When my son was being unreasonable I packed a suitcase for him and put it by the door and said you act like that again and you’re out. I meant it. You should not have to put up with this. My only advice is tough love and protection of your other children. Boys can get used to being a bully and I guarantee he wouldn’t act up if you were 6 ft with muscles

No he wouldn’t it’s because I’m a woman and there isn’t a male presence in the house. This is the problem he thinks he’s the male of the house and the boss and can do what he wants when he wants. He thinks because he’s 16 now he shouldn’t have time limits and rules.

My cousin said it was really upsetting but said it was the best call she made.
hes now looked after 24/7 with people trained to do so and she visits and it’s all quite well managed.
you have to be kind to yourself and your other kids and you sound like you’ve done your absolute best with him.

I really have despite feeling sad and guilty about even thinking of moving him out.

He is heading towards Young Offenders Prison and then Adult prison if he doesn't change.

Anything but take away their phones and acsess to short form content and brain frying video games 24/7. The OP said they went to Mallorca and all he did was sit and watch you tube. Doesn’t anybody think it’s worth a try? I said give him a brick phone instead. Honestly, these devices are making our children demented they are frying their brains. Making them depressed, angry, anxious, afraid of real world interaction. Started about 6 years ago, I wonder what shift happened around then? I’m sure it’s not the whole story. Having no father around will be huge for him. Even the lack of sleep at night because they are up way past daylight hours doomscrolling is so corrosive for a growing boy causing irritability, hormones out of balance.

I have explained the situation and where everything changed 6 years ago. If you go down the thread it’s there. It’s the fact his dad is a useless prick, then my break up with my husband and him leaving and then my narcissist ex, it’s kind of learnt behaviour in a way from the men that have been present in his life. He has no respect for women at all and is very sexist, racist and homophobic and I don’t even know why.

If the son cares about his 3 year old sister, how about getting her dad involved? He should be involved anyway, he should be protecting his daughter from this negative home environment.

Sunbringer · 03/09/2026 11:08

You call social services and ask for help. If he threatens violence you call the police.

This is what started the behaviour last night because I turned the WiFi off and it has time limits, he started shouting about the internet being crap and him lagging and when I said please stop shouting your siblings are asleep and back to school tomorrow I got shut up you fat whale and I don’t care so I took the box out and his ps5 out and he went mental and ran upstairs and started shouting everyone up time to wake up and clapping loud he woke his siblings up and they couldn’t go back of to sleep for ages. He then proceeded to go outside when it was half 10 at night and shout racial abuse, I said get back in we have neighbours that’s not ok and he went I don’t care kept saying he was going to hit me and knock me out and that the internet is all my fault because I have timers on it and that’s why it lags. His brothers struggled to get up this morning and are exhausted because of his selfish and immature behaviour because I took something away.

This would give him ammo and a reason to take her from me. He’s that kind if bloke.

You don’t know why? He’s watched his mum get into relationships with men who mistreat her. He models himself on these men who have been held up to him as examples of adult manhood.

Yet he knows right from wrong and I’m not the one who asked my ex husband to cheat and leave us and my daughters dad to be a complete cunt. He should see these adult men as disgraces and know that’s not how you act and treat someone, anyone especially your own mother.

You might not recognise this as domestic abuse but it is.

Contact woman's aid and consider calling the police. Being arrested might give him a kick up the butt.

Is he in school? Or college? Was he disruptive and violent in school too?

I'm only asking as I'd suggest talking with someone at the school or college. At our primary school, we'd much rather a parent comes to us and says "I'm really struggling, I can't handle how he is at home, please help" as we can work as a team. We can signpost the parent to support locally, but we can also talk about what approaches work well in school, what doesn't work well, and it really helps for the school staff to understand what's happening at home.

It could be that he's aged out of that kind of support from school but in a non-judgemental way, that's what I'd suggest as a first port of call.

I'm so sorry that you're living like this, it must be really stressful and isolating.

I saw someone else already ask about any sports or gym as that was another thing I thought of when I read your post. My sons go nearly daily to the gym for and they play team sports. One of them commented a few years ago that he likes his gym training and the training and matches as it helps to get any aggression out in a safe way, he feels lighter and calmer after a work out. I know it's different as he's not got the same behaviours or character as your 16 year old but I was just thinking about the gym impact on his mental health.

My DH found a sport that really turned things around for him as a teen too, he was an angry young man and in trouble alot but he had really positive male role models at this sport who taught him about respect and responsibility and those old fellas are still a huge part of his life and made a massive difference.

I'm so sorry that you've not had the support you want and need from social services. Are you able to contact Action for Children? They've got some useful contacts and signposting and advice on their website but you might prefer to talk to someone in real life. I found this page for you and there are more contacts if your scroll to the bottom of the page: Dealing with violent behaviour from your child or teenager

You shouldn’t have to put up with this
He needs to understand that bad behaviour has consequences.
I understand I’m not walking in your shoes OP
but I just would not be able to put up with this behaviour. It would break me. I’ve had awful behaviour from my sons before and honestly the only thing they seemed to understand cold toughness
I honestly would have called the Police
