OP, you need to put yourselves first while you have a chance.
I have noticed that the most people pleasing people are often surrounded by the most selfish.
Your mother has chosen herself for decades and you have tolerated it.
You need to put this precious time with your young adult children first.
My friend didn't. She allowed herself to be guilted by both parents for years and did the whole full Christmas thing because she felt she had no choice.
Both sets of parents dominated the whole holiday.
Her children never brought friends back and went to the houses of friends when living at home.
Then when they went to university they started accepting invitations to go to the houses of friends.
Now they have careers they go on holidays.
All the parents are in nursing homes and she and her husband had a very quiet Christmas on their own last year, as their kids were all off with friends.
She confided in me last January her regret.
They have no happy connection with home for Christmas as it was dominated by demanding grandparents.
These years fly by and as adult children built their own lives, being all together can become a logistical challenge.
Its really ok to say this is my time with them and prioritise it above everything and everyone.
