Meghan absolutely has no responsibility for what her father may have done (I’m phrasing it this way as he has not yet been charged or convicted).

I am struggling with the fact that she was made aware of something along these lines, 8 years ago, and settled with being “assured” that it was being looked in to. That doesn’t sit right, for me. She had/has way more resources available to her than your everyday person, I can’t believe she’d not want updates/press for further action. That’s 8 years for him to be doing god knows what. I’m not talking about her speaking publicly about it, but I am interested in whether she pushed for further info over the years or not.

There are a lot of questions that need answering here, not just from M:

When was the letter received by the Met (and was it dated)?
When did they inform M?
What did the Met do (if anything)?
Was TM left unchecked for 8 years - if so, why?
T Jr apparently called an FBI hotline over 3 months ago - why was there no follow up from them?
Given there was no follow-up, why didn’t he try another avenue?

Horrific situation, but relevant authorities really need to ramp up investigations asap.

I assume you are going to hold members of the Royal family to the same standard?

On a thread about AMW, yes, but not on this one. Two different scenarios, two different threads. Let me know when you’ve started one and I’ll hop on over.

It's telling, isn't it?

When the Andrew news broke earlier this year, so MANY posters here defended the royals, saying they couldn't be held responsible in anyway for Andrew's actions, despite said royals being seen socializing several times with Andrew AFTER the allegations were made public. The lovely Waleses even supposedly said they preferred Andrew as a neighbour to those horrid Sussexes 😂
Additionally, the royal family and the Firm are two different entities and by paying off his accuser and keeping Andrew around, the Queen and Charles sent a very clear message. Sure, they weren't responsible for his actions but the noncey one should have been relegated to obscurity and stripped off his titles a long time ago.

Yet here we are trying to find ways to make Meghan Markle culpable for her nasty pedo father who she hasn't seen in 8 years. From a personal perspective, what more is expected from a family member other than cutting all contact and staying away? Was Meghan supposed to lead the prosecution? And as soon as the allegations were public, she made a very clear statement.

Maybe it's my autistic brain but it's the hypocrisy I can't understand. Why is she always held to such different standards in comparable situations? Why are the goalposts always moved when new info comes to light? Why do women act like this towards other women?

OliveMyLove · Yesterday 03:24

I am holding them to the same standard. I do.

Meghan is not responsible for her family. I do not associate her with these accusations.

gishgalloping · Yesterday 03:59

I find Harry and Meghan generally quite annoying but I do feel sympathy for her about this. It would be horrendous to discover this about her own father, regardless of their previous estrangement.

@ohdelay the police informed the royal family and Meghan. The royal family are not treated like any ordinary person.
But actually if family members e.g. children are thought to be potentially at risk, the police can visit and let you know about allegations.

Why inform any of the above? It was nothing to do with them. Also what did they do next as they've said there was no investigation on the allegations. This is actually pretty sinister that they shared info on the allegations with relatives of the accused. There is no excuse for them doing that.

Not quite correct. They forwarded a letter to Meghan which contained allegations. We do not at this time know what the allegations were. The wider RF were not informed

That makes even less sense. Why would the police forward a letter of allegations sent to them to Meghan Markle directly.

LipglossAndLies · Yesterday 08:16

Look at the coverage Meghan received for keeping her distance from her father. Years of headlines portraying her as heartless, cruel and lacking compassion, while commentators publicly pressured her to reconcile with him. Here are just some examples and there is plenty more:

• July 2019 — Ingrid Seward: “Phone your dad, Meghan … for his sake and for yours”
• January 2020 — Piers Morgan: Thomas Markle’s texts supposedly exposed Meghan and Harry as a “heartless pair”.
• May 2022 — An article reporting Tom Bower’s claim that compassion required Meghan to visit her father after his stroke.
• May 2022 — Richard Kay: A warning that Harry might regret failing to reach out to his seriously ill father-in-law.
• May 2022 — Dan Wootton: Criticism of Meghan for visiting Uvalde while not visiting her father.
• May 2023 — Nadine Dorries: “Make peace with your dad, Meghan, or regret it for ever…”
• July 2023 — Richard Kay: A column describing their estrangement from Thomas Markle as the cruellest of their broken relationships.
• January 2025 — Amanda Platell: A column arguing that her father’s move should weigh on Meghan’s conscience and questioning her lack of a loving gesture.

The allegations now being reported need to be investigated, not prejudged. But that principle also applies to posters om this vosrd who sre now whipping up consipracy theories that Meghan and Doria have somehow orchestrated everything. Where is the evidence for that?

Nobody here knows the full history of that family relationship. Yet some posters were certain she was wrong to keep her distance, and now seem equally certain that anything which might challenge their view must be a plot. That looks like a determination to blame her whatever happens.

And assuming the letter from the Met (that they have no knowledge of) must have been from a reliable source for them to raise it with MM, presumably that reliable source was US based law enforcement such as the FBI. So why only tell MM and not his other children that actually had contact with him?

MM and H then went into such detail about the estrangement over the years in Oprah and Netflix for example. They were either lies or they didn't know about the accusations. And she wrote a letter to him to "pull at the heart strings"

I think its the first MM has heard of it. But she wants to use it to explain her being estranged from her dad. I think thats the only logical explanation.

Regarding her dad if what he did is true it is disgusting.

Regarding MM and her statement, past experience of what she says not being true means that we shouldn't be gullible enough to believe what she says without independent corroboration. Healthy skepticism is in order with someone with her track record. If/when it is corroborated then she will have further questions to answer about why she kept quiet, which I am sure she will explain on a Netflix interview.

She"s married someone in it but would you call your in-laws that you barely know and are estranged from, your family? I would have though MM not having relationships with people she only met through her husband would mean she has the luxury of not calling them family (assuming what she said about them driving her almost to suicide was true).

All a bit pointless really if you don't have the responsibilities and duties to go with it. No estate to run or real engagements. No constitutional role for much longer one would assume. They're just unfortunately the problem relations that all families have..including MM herself who has more than her fair share. They just happen to have all their dirty laundry publicised worldwide either by themselves or the press.

Poor Harry for ending up falling in love with her and marrying into that family. Not great to end up having children with someone who has family like that and who will be your children's relations. Can't chose who you love but its been quite a destructive ride for him.

Where is the lie? Its possible to have more than one reason to cut off your Dad and there is plenty when it comes to Thomas. I don't find it weird she didn't go running to tell anyone in 201i when it was just a letter of accusation no substantial proof or evidence and after being told it was being investigated, naturally anyone would wait for that to conclude.

How many more times? Meghan herself put out THE narrative on why she wasn’t speaking to him - a fairly trivial matter of organised pap pictures, a matter that has looked more and more trivial as the years have gone on and Meghan’s own behaviour has been no better. She didn’t have to do that, she could have kept quiet about a private, family matter, but she did talk about it, as part of her lucrative media moan fest. Nobody made up HER explanation for why she cut him off. She and her husband also talk constantly about valuing family ties. She asked people to believe her words and value her accordingly, because media and public attention and credibility is what she desires. If the public and media listened to HER narrative and believed her and responded accordingly, then that is on HER. Second guessing that there must be some other (extreme and appalling) reason doesn’t cut it when the principle herself is the one giving out the information on massive, lucrative platforms that have been scrutinised (one would hope) for veracity like the Netflix doc and Harry’s book. Taken in the context of her warm and loving publicly available words about her father from her Tig days and her speech to the UN before her marriage, why on earth would anyone think the worst about her father or their relationship?

Nobody here knows the full truth, but stop judging the public for believing the explanation that one of the principles involved chose to put into the public domain.

He keeps going about it though, as if it means something outside of a particular context. He's not a working royal so he doesn't have to keep saying "I'm a prince!" as some kind of excuse/justification for his actions.

NocturnalFox · Yesterday 00:07

Well... So, Meghan learned about the suspicions regarding her father shortly after the wedding (the media suggest "in the summer" of 2018: June, July, or perhaps August?). Because it is worth remembering that in August 2018, Meghan wrote a letter to her father, addressing him as "Daddy." In it, she expresses her distress over matters such as Mr. Markle’s staged photos and his public statements, yet she makes no mention of those suspicions.
Mr. Markle did not release the letter; no one even knew Meghan had written it...
...until February 2019, when her friends "inadvertently" revealed its existence during an interview with People magazine.
So, by February 2019—months after she supposedly became aware of the allegations—Meghan still wanted it known that she had attempted to reach out to her father. This leads to one of two conclusions:
1- It is not true that she knew about the allegations in 2018; therefore, they were not the reason she severed ties with her father.
2- She did know about the allegations in 2018, yet she still sought to contact her father.Which is undoubtedly very strange.

It’s not necessarily as black and white as you are trying to make out.

She may have thought him innocent,

She may have decided to wait until the outcome of this investigation was concluded and clear.

She may have been a victim herself but denied it to herself out of fear or shame or horror at the whole world knowing.

Also the form of the intelligence about TM is not clear. I imagine it came through US intelligence to UK intelligence and from there to the heads of the VIP and Royal protection unit in the Met.

It could have been anything from the mildest of suspicions to the most concrete of evidence. The allegations may have concerned past behaviour or current behaviour or both.

You have also got to remember the febrile nature of tabloid press stories at the time too eg a totally false story circulated that Doria had been incarcerated which meant that Carole Malone of GB News had to read an apology live on air saying it was totally false.
