I read that some of her belongings (purse?) and hammer were found in his bins. Either he's the stupidest burglar ever or he wants to be found guilty for his own reasons.

What? He’s a sadistic evil murderer. He walked in and hammered her skull in. Yes he then robbed her, but he didn’t drive 6 hours to rob her, he drove six hours to murder her. And was then taking keep sakes or momentos of his crime. That’s why he asked for id or bank cards. That’s why he took her purse. That’s why he photographed it. It was a memento. Something he could look at to remind him of what he did,

he also clearly didn’t know there was a camera in her hallway. Recording his brutal attack.

WonderfulSmith · 21/07/2026 18:18

That poor woman. No one should have to suffer that. As was said upthread, she was a woman of deep faith, I hope it was comforting to her during those moments and I hope those who loved her find comfort too.

HoraceCope · 21/07/2026 18:18

just awful, i couldnt read about this earlier, could not face the news

HoraceCope · 21/07/2026 18:20

and the poor gardener was actually asked to a welfare check - at least i think it was the gardener?

Strange that the BBC report said that the medical report doesn't yet state cause of death. Is it possible she had a heart attack midway through the attack

No, it stated in court she died from a blunt force injury.

I never said he was actually a burglar! Just implied it was unlikely. Otherwise I totally agree with you. So sick.

The picture posted in the papers after he was named bears no resemblance to the CCTV of him allegedly getting in his car outside his home

The picture in the papers is a photo of the accused from 2022. The ‘face’ shown on the camera photo of a man getting into a red Corsa is AI-generated.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/07/2026 18:26

I don’t think there are words for this brutal attack. Having lived very near to her house, it’s hard to explain just how remote Haytor is. Keeping her doors unlocked would be perfectly normal. Poor Ann.

LochKatrine · 21/07/2026 18:35

Horrific, as pp have said. A 78 year old woman having a quiet lunch at home in Devon, then a man walks in and bludgeons her to death. I really hope that the first blow knocked her out and she didn't feel the other 20 .
So distressing. Poor Ann 🙏

FuzzyPuffling · 21/07/2026 18:37

She was my MP when i lived in Kent, and I have never had a better one despite being on different sides of politics. Her letters were completely written in her "voice".

Rest in peace and rise in glory, Ann.

Edited

She always sounded very authentic, didn't she? It wasn't about soundbites or getting power for her.

MidnightPatrol · 21/07/2026 18:46

So pointlessly awful.

Just a completely unnecessary and violent end to a productive and principled life.

And at 78. She looks quite frail in recent images. Just eating lunch alone in her house.

Our public figures are increasingly vulnerable, and the polarisation of politics and demonisation of individuals is driving this kind of radicalisation.

Absolutely..we seem to be losing the middle ground. It's an increasingly polarised society and it's getting worse.

The DM also reports they found photos of her ID/cards on his phone which IMO sounds like he was possibly posting proof of his crime to someone.

That’s sinister. I suppose the police will be able to trace the device the photos were sent to. I won’t speculate further, it’s disrespectful to Ann.

ofcolitas · 21/07/2026 18:58

If they had CCTV evidence of the attack then why did they arrest the gardener first?

Skodacool · 21/07/2026 19:00

sittingonabeach · 21/07/2026 15:36

Who the hell drives all that way to bludgeon an old lady with a hammer and then drives back.

What would have happened if he had arrived when she was on the scheduled zoom call

That doesn’t bear thinking about!

Applepe · 21/07/2026 19:05

From the news reports it seems that the gardener was asked to do a welfare check on the day of the murder, but didn’t find her until the following day. 😤

I can only guess that he (the gardener) looks a lot like the suspect.

The other thing that bothers me is her message chain with the telly producers. When she abruptly stops replying they ask if everything is ok and try to ring her a few times. But why did nobody call the police for a welfare check then? I know it wouldn't have saved her but it would've spared her having to lie dead in her kitchen for a whole day and night.

palorina · 21/07/2026 19:12

It's so sickening and so bizarre, the method, the travel, the trophies photographed, everything about this horrible murder is just beyond comprehension to me anyway.

I can only imagine how her family and relatives are feeling, knowing the horrendous details of her death now.

Something very very strange about this.

If they had CCTV evidence of the attack then why did they arrest the gardener first?

I assume they look similar. Thay would be the obvious answer. No?

I’d imagine so. He was asked to go and check on her

thehardestpartis · 21/07/2026 19:24

It’s scary that on the same day this is being heard in court, people say this sort of thing

Did they arrest the gardener? I know they arrested someone in a local town but I’m not sure they said who it was (quite rightly IMO, as the first person arrested was fairly quickly discounted)

The picture the Daily Mail put up was taken Easter 2022. It bears little resemblance to the recording of him getting into the car.

What recording?

Pretty shocked at the DM publishing all that information about his family with names and things

Noideamatey · 21/07/2026 19:27

Something doesn't sit right with me.

With the details coming out about the extent of her injuries, why at the beginning were the police stating it "might be a murder"? Seems pretty clear cut!!!
