Thoughts on the name Agatha and nickname Aggie?

Thoughts on the name Agatha, middle name Jean, with a double-barrelled surname?

I really like Agatha, and we’d probably use Aggie as a nickname. I know it’s quite a divisive name, so interested to hear what people think…

One thing I’m unsure about is whether people associate “Aggie/aggy” with “aggressive” or being irritable? I’m not from the UK so I’m not sure if this is actually a thing people would notice?

Would love honest thoughts.

It’s great. Not a huge fan of Jean but good as a middle name.

I really don’t like it as a name - I just think of it as a witch name, and I do think of it as fairly ugly and aggressive sounding.
But, I’m certain that if I met an actual Agatha, I’d change my mind! I haven’t ever met someone in real life with the name, and I’m sure my preconceptions would change if I did.

I’m team love it! Also love Agnes but would shorten that to Nessie. And Audrey/Audrina/Augusta are lovely. There are some fabulous names that went out of fashion 100 years ago and need a revival. Jean is also adorable, you have great taste in names OP.

Love Agatha and love Aggie.

I also love Agnes.

One of my DC friends (late 20's) is an Agnes and she is adorable and it really suits her!!

*edited to add that she goes by Aggie as well

In the 80s in my area Aggie meant someone was old fashioned and unpopular, and used as an insult. I remember feeling very sorry for someone called Agnès at that time, so it's a name which I would stay away from, but slang changes and that's not likely to be a connotation for most people.

Love it, I have a gorgeous little relative named Agatha. Full name used as often as her NN. Interestingly this has become Athi, rather than Aggy.

It’s one of the ugliest names ever and I cannot imagine inflicting it upon a lovely newborn. The nickname is even worse.

I find the g sound a bit harsh in a name. Aggie gor aggressive is something that would have been said when we were kids, so I doubt it's still in fashion now. It probably won't be an association kids will make.

I know a 6 year old Agatha who mainly goes by Aggie. I don’t think it is a name I would have associated with a baby before I met her but she’s her name and it suits her!

A friend named her little daughter Agatha about 3 years ago, it’s lovely. Distinctive, original, suits her. You can reclaim an old fashioned name by rediscovering it and giving it new associations. Don’t think it gets shortened to Aggie. Greek in origin, Agatha means good, kind or honourable, all noble aspirations. She’ll be the only one in her class at school I expect, which is nice!

Oh don't, my middle name is Agnes and I detest it (and Aggie) so much I don't use it even as a middle initial. I used to get called Ugly Aggie at school. even without that association I think Aggie is an awful sounding name. Jean is an old lady name that hasn't come back into fashion either.

I quite like Agatha, and I love the French version, Agathe, but I don’t like any of the usual shortened forms. Names starting in ‘Ag’ are difficult to shorten nicely — I know an Agnes whose family diminutive is ‘Nag’!

I have a Polish friend called Agata who goes by ‘Aga’?

Agatha is ok, Aggie is awful
I prefer Agnes

Also Miss Trunchbull is called Agatha - your child won’t be happy when they do Matilda in school…..

Sorry, no. Aggie is used for aggressive very commonly where I live, so it would be just weird. That's on top of Agatha being quite an ugly name.

Cute or not for a toddler , it's not a name I could live with as an adult. It's way too harsh.

I don't like it. The Aggie reminds me of the behaviour passive-aggressive.

It's a horrible name and the.nickname aggie is even worse. Knew someone with the name agnes who was called aggie the hag.
Both names & nickname are very harsh sounding.

Thank you everyone for all the replies! Some VERY strong opinions, just as I suspected 😂

It’s really interesting to hear everyone’s associations with it. We like Agatha precisely because it feels distinctive, strong and a bit different… we’re not really drawn to names in the Top 100 and wanted something with a bit more character.

Jean is an important family name, so that part is definitely staying!

We’re still undecided, but I think this thread has confirmed that Agatha is very much a love-it-or-hate-it name 😂. I’m probably going to stop worrying about whether everyone else likes it and concentrate on whether we love it enough for our daughter when we meet her in a few weeks.

I love it. An old charming proper name. Good that it is out of the top 100. Taggie is a brilliant abbreviation if there has to be one. Similar vibes to Martha but just less over used. Love the literary connotations….there’s also a Spanish aristocrat/ fashion designer called Agatha Ruiz de la Prada.
