FOUR out of FIVE new jobs went to foreigners in the past decade, new report reveals

Four in five jobs created over the past decade have been taken by migrants.

Of the 3.7million new roles recorded under the PAYE system since 2014, just 734,000 were taken by UK nationals, a think-tank has found.

EU citizens accounted for 408,000 jobs, while the vast majority – 2.5million – went to migrants from the rest of the world, the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) said, with most of the surge coming since the pandemic.

The think-tank warned that while employers gained 'unprecedented access to overseas labour', taxpayers have been forced to absorb the cost of millions of Britons being 'written off' and left on benefits.

As the number of migrant workers soared by 2.1million from 2020, the number of people receiving out-of-work benefits across the UK rose by 2.3million.

More than one in four (29 per cent) of the jobs that went to migrant workers from outside Europe were in health and social work.

So much for British jobs for British people!

Do we think this is due to Brits being 'too lazy to work' or because of a combination of employers wanting to pay lower wages and offer worse working conditions to migrants/preferring to employ migrants/not wanting to invest in training Brits/diversity hire tick boxes etc.

My son in law worked in recruitment for several large warehouses (think Amazon, big online shops etc) until recently. He said that the vast vast majority of applicants were foreign nationals, and that many of the UK nationals that do apply leave pretty quickly as the work is boring, physically taxing and the hours are long. The money is very good as a result.

He thinks that many British young people see the job as beneath them and dont want to do the hard work that it takes to earn the wages.

Amazon warehouses are horrible places to work and instead of "creating jobs" as is claimed they rather replaced a lot of decentish jobs (regular warehouse worker, back of house shop worker, front of house shop worker) with one type of very low pay high stress job. And also decimated the high street at the same time. I do think there is a conversation to be had there. However, that's about how far massive multinationals should be allowed to "disrupt" economies and jobs with 0 repurcussuons in the future. Not an immigrant thing really.

I’m guessing, ok?
Some employers from overseas might prefer to employ people with the same language/from the same culture
Unscrupulous employers might prefer people who are more vulnerable (ie would have to move if they can’t keep their job)
There has always been a shortage of carers as it’s hard, poorly paid, thankless work - there probably is a legitimate shortage of
locals to do it

There are some exemptions in terms of cultural recruitment. But otherwise discrimination is against the law.

Has me wondering too!

Well any mention of the 'right' has people literally frothing. Let's rephrase that to a forum largely full of Labour supporters.

To recruit in large numbers the employer would be a sponsor and proactively advertise what would be a modest job overseas.

My apologies, I didnt make clear that they were not recruited from abroad. All the applicants have the right to work and live in the UK but are immigrants.

I should imagine a vast majority of those with families will be claiming top up benefits like housing benefit, universal credit, child benefit and also using services like the NHS, schools, etc while paying very little in.

We are also paying the same benefits to Brits who can't find a job.

You do the Math.

Do some reading perhaps?

The Fiscal Impact of Immigration in the UK - Migration Observatory

This briefing gives an overview of research on the impact of immigration on government finances in the UK and explains the main issues related to estimating the fiscal impact of immigration in the UK.

Or maybe in many cases they’re happy to mop up the jobs many here on benefits don’t fancy?

YellowBlanketAfternoon · 14/10/2026 17:52

The Centre for Social Justice that has published this is a centre right think tank. Not an unbiased, credible source. Their funding is unclear and lacks transparency -

“In September 2023, the funding transparency website Who Funds You? gave the CSJ a D grade, the second-lowest transparency rating (rating goes from A to E).[22]”

“research from organizations like the Migration Observatory and Full Fact shows that immigrants do not generally "take" jobs from UK-born workers in a zero-sum way.”

Lets not let biased, unchecked information get us sucked into the dog whistle politics of wealthy and powerful people who would rather we blame immigrants than look too closely at the impact of the powerful and wealthy on social inequality and deteriorating standards of living.

This site is well known to be left wing. People on here literally parrot Labour sound bytes with no critical thinking whatsoever. No one is spending time and effort posting on here in the hope of influencing someone to vote in a particular way. If they actually believe they are, I truly despair.

Do you really believe nobody tries to influence opinion via social media?

If so, whey did Reform UK spend £380,000 on social media adverts between August 1 and September 25, 2026?

If you were going to spend money trying to win votes would you spend it all on people who already vote for you or people who don't?

Not according to SonIL, and he should know as he had to process their paperwork which, as I am sure you know, includes their proof of right to work.

The thing is that stuff only gets in the paper if it’s unusual or exceptional. Obviously this stuff happens, but if it happened all the time it would be in the magazine/lifestyle section at best.

Yes I'm sure that's true. I was just pointing out that the "Ha ha these can't both be true!" sneer doesn't actually hold up to examination. They can both be true.
Because they don't have to refer to the same individuals.

Well a lot of low paid social and health care employees will be claiming top up benefits, ditto those in other low paid roles if they bring families with them.

Cost of living in the UK is hardly cheap is it now.

Why didn’t British workers apply for the jobs. Employers want the best regardless of where the candidates were born.

Oh of course - it’s completely against the law.

But we all know many people still do it, especially on the basis of sex and nationality/ethnicity.

Also, not everyone can be a carer. The Philippines is interesting because they seem to have a whole cultural thing of nursing and care work being a really noble/valued profession to go into. "Nurses from the Philippines" is a stereotype the world over. I know that's partly because the wages you can earn overseas nursing is more but I don't think it's just that because it isn't just the Phillipines where that is the case. It would be interesting to look at how to make.caring and nursing more culturally valued here. It's. It just about the pay, though I think that can matter as well. The problem is the attitude of "make the unemployed NEETs just do caring" bandied about isnt exactly going to help with that. It suggests it is something the "feckless layabouts" should be doing as punishment.

Employers who recruit an overseas worker do not have to advertise it to prove they could not find someone already here to do it.

This is Iain Duncan Smith’s baby. You would expect right wing views.

I think new roles is probably not what they are. Many will be taking the place of retired workers. It does suggest the Brits are not wanting the roles or are too expensive and need a lot more training. The obvious employment area is health and if we want a semi functioning health service, should we not have employed them? The 1 million neets almost certainly could not do these roles.

As a lot of the roles are care work, according to the post, then a lot of those maybe new roles, as the need for care roles is increasing a the population ages.

Of course, those are the kind of roles the Brits don’t want to do. My friends dad had 3 carers barcode he passed away recently, none were British.

….why though is an immigrant more attractive to employ than a UK citizen? There needs to be a reason to explain your theory?

Because they are already trained so employers don't have to bother spending time training up 18 year olds, because someone else in another country has done that. And all the reasons the person I quoted stated. That if your visa is dependent on your job employers can get you to do what they like. There are also places who basically applied to be sponsors as part of visa scams. We have a hugely inefficient system for work ( and student) visas where people know full well they can just do what they like and the chances of them being caught are minimal.
