FOUR out of FIVE new jobs went to foreigners in the past decade, new report reveals

Four in five jobs created over the past decade have been taken by migrants.

Of the 3.7million new roles recorded under the PAYE system since 2014, just 734,000 were taken by UK nationals, a think-tank has found.

EU citizens accounted for 408,000 jobs, while the vast majority – 2.5million – went to migrants from the rest of the world, the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) said, with most of the surge coming since the pandemic.

The think-tank warned that while employers gained 'unprecedented access to overseas labour', taxpayers have been forced to absorb the cost of millions of Britons being 'written off' and left on benefits.

As the number of migrant workers soared by 2.1million from 2020, the number of people receiving out-of-work benefits across the UK rose by 2.3million.

More than one in four (29 per cent) of the jobs that went to migrant workers from outside Europe were in health and social work.

So much for British jobs for British people!

Do we think this is due to Brits being 'too lazy to work' or because of a combination of employers wanting to pay lower wages and offer worse working conditions to migrants/preferring to employ migrants/not wanting to invest in training Brits/diversity hire tick boxes etc.

Bot/ stirrer/ journalist? The word Foreigner is a give away as to the intention of this post.
Love the League of Gentlemen comment! 😂
And @titchy, well said.

That's how it's reported in the MSM. You can google the outlets reporting it.

How absolutely pathetic you accuse someone of being a bot/stirrer because you dislike the subject and think MN is some sort of protected space for you where you shouldn't have to see anything discussed you don't like 😂

As a parent of teens and young adults who have been struggling to get jobs (and I know they are far from the only ones out of their peers), I think it's an important topic for discussion.

This has been reported in the news TODAY.

The Chief of MI5 should have have a word with the media, and the organisation which published the report, and tell them off?

Edited

I can only find Iain's report in today's right wing media Telegraph, GBNews etc.

No. The employer ‘sponsors’ them to come here.
The employer does not have to prove that they could not find someone to do the job already resident in the UK before doing so.

How do they get visas then? Because employers need to prove that if they don’t already have the right to work.

Oh dear, is that because you don't like what I'm saying. Dismiss me as a bot 😂

Why would a Russian bot want to come on a Mums forum?

Not saying you are a bot, but there are plenty of bots targeting Mumsnet because it has a large audience.

Worth chucking the report through AI with a prompt asking about credibility and bias btw….

The report bases that claim on "it's own analysis" of the statistics found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/uk-payrolled-employments-by-nationality-region-industry-age-and-sex-from-july-2014-to-december-2025/uk-payrolled-employments-by-nationality-region-industry-age-and-sex-from-july-2014-to-december-2025. That's the specific set of stats they reference.

However, while I do think there are concerning things in the report (the number of UK nationals in employment rose after COVID to post COVID levels but then fell again) I can't see how they got the 4/5 statistic at all. I am not saying it is wrong just that I can't see their working there at all. You would have, on the face of it, to make a lot of convenient assumptions to make that stat fit.

It would be good if someone more knowledgeable could figure out the maths

Also worth noting in the above report is that wages for non-UK nationals (both non-EU and EU) have risen slightly faster than for UK citizens. This isn't that surprising since the new working visa rules brought in by the Conservatives had a threshold income for people coming to the UK, and Labour raised it by more. So you would expect that to filter out some of the lower wages. However I do agree that people having to live in HMOs, be underpaid is a problem. But then we need to accept paying jobs like carers and prison staff more (and crucially providing good quality free training and career paths. But that costs money).

UK payrolled employments by nationality, region, industry, age and sex, from July 2014 to December 2025

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/uk-payrolled-employments-by-nationality-region-industry-age-and-sex-from-july-2014-to-december-2025/uk-payrolled-employments-by-nationality-region-industry-age-and-sex-from-july-2014-to-december-2025

"You do the math" is one of those unwanted immigrant phrases from the USA. Along with Americanised mangling of the pronunciation of words such as "advertisement" and "privacy". Be-gone, back to where you came from, and take all the pumpkin spice nonsense with you too.

Perhaps they are willing to do the jobs others aren't prepared to do?

This is the reason, if you are from a poorer country our shit jobs are a step up in the world.

Lovemycat2023 · 14/10/2026 17:28

i have to confess to not understanding what “new jobs” or “jobs created” means. Presumably this isn’t replacing individual staff who move on (so for example in existing caring roles) so does it mean new industries/ new employers / expansions? If so is there something about those jobs which mean they are more likely to be filled by those from abroad - for example AI jobs being filled by people from countries which have more AI industry.

Or does new jobs simply mean anything advertised?

I've just emailed Tim Harford at BBC More or Less to see if they can make a bit more sense of what on the surface seems like a very strange statistic. Can't imagine I'll be the only listener who's sent this one in.

Actually, the construction trade did ask for builders to come from India so this may not be too far off.

There was a factory that I knew of ( through work) in 2004/5 that did replace all theirstaff with polish workers Jobs weren't advertised in the UK. Same as many farm workers

PumpkinSeasonIsHere · 14/10/2026 17:25

How do they get visas then? Because employers need to prove that if they don’t already have the right to work.

The Employer applies to become a Sponsor. Able to recruit overseas workers.
The Home office website will explain. Once a Sponsor they have to meet requirements but can then ‘endorse’ an overseas worker to come. They then issue a Certificate of Sponsorship and there you are.

ChaosandCwtches · 14/10/2026 17:30

The 4 out of 5 number has been pulled together by looking at the net increase in jobs which is misleading.

In 2014 UK nationals held 88% of jobs and by 2025 that had dropped to 80%. So the non UK share has increased but saying they’ve had 4 out of 5 jobs is obviously ridiculous.

Douglasmummy · 14/10/2026 17:31

willingtolearn · 14/10/2026 17:04

Wage suppression, more likely to accept poorer pay and conditions.

Employers like the threat of a revokable visa. Less likely to argue or even be aware of employment law/working rights

Lazy government preferring not to invest in its own people.

Greedy and lazy employers preferring not to train anyone at all - more profit that way.

This. It's all very well for degree educated Mumsnetters to virtue signal about how anti racist they are about immigrants but they aren't the ones who are faced with applying for hundreds of jobs at minimum wage that they can't get and are languishing on benefits. Employers want staff that they don't have to bother to train, so drain other countries of their trained staff. The health and care visa was designed to cover a shortfall of 30-50k people. 600, 000 visas were issued due to the botched post Brexit visa system set up by the Johnson government. The rest of these people aren't working in care. They are working in shops, some illegally, deliveroo drivers etc, so they are taking minimum wage jobs in areas like hospitality and retail that young people could be doing to at least get on the ladder of working, or be trained into.

cityliving99 · 14/10/2026 17:13

We have millions of young people out of work.
They should be encouraged to go for these jobs.

There’s a very good reason why it’s hard to find people for traditionally female tasks like caring, cleaning, nursing and even teaching.

Persephonia1966 · 14/10/2026 17:32

PumpkinSeasonIsHere · 14/10/2026 17:25

How do they get visas then? Because employers need to prove that if they don’t already have the right to work.

We moved to a points based immigration system where the government would identify roles on which there was a shortage and then make it easier/possible to get a visa for those jobs rather than an employer having to request visas. Also there was a minimum income requirement.
This was something that the right wing press really wanted at the time. There was much talk of having an "Australian style points based system" and how Brexit would make this possible. I said at the time that a "points based" system would potentially benefit employers but reduce the incentive for employers/government to spend money training young people or raising wages. (It does make sense for seasonal farm work TBF).
However, we had Brexit, we got the Australian points based system. People still complain that there is too much immigration and we need an Australian style points based system. Sigh.

This really isn’t very surprising given that we have government schemes aimed at encouraging people to come here from overseas to fill roles across sectors like care, medicine and agriculture.

EU citizens accounted for 408,000 jobs, while the vast majority – 2.5million – went to migrants from the rest of the world, the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) said, with most of the surge coming since the pandemic.

Iain Duncan Smith is the Chairman of the CSJ.
Iain Duncan Smith took a leading role in the Brexit Leave campaign.
He's been a Conservative MP throughout the whole period this report covers.
The Conservatives were in power for the majority of the period covered in this report.

The pandemic coincided with Brexit coming into effect.
Since then 2.5 million jobs to migrants from the rest of the world.

EU workers were net contributors.

Not only IDS but a Tim "too far right for reform" Montgomerie "impartial" study.

Foreign workers definitely prop up the NHS. Ageing gammons still believe the rot they are fed by the daily mail.
