To ask all the “flat” or “small” chested ladies how did you find self acceptance or self love?

ITanya78 · 21/09/2026 11:46

I was bullied at school for being flat chested and never developed breasts at all, always been very straight up and down. The boys would call me names and plant pictures of busty topless women in my bag. I still get that lurch of shame and humiliation when I see that kind of image.

I can’t afford surgery and not sure I could cope with it anyway. Therapy is also too costly. At 48, I am tired of feeling ashamed of my body, unfeminine and unsexy. There must be others with my body type who don’t have these feelings so I am asking for a bit of help in how to find self acceptance and self love. What works for you?

Have been following Olivia Dean on Instagram and find her confidence inspirational. It’s been nice to feel a little represented for once. I really want to change and feel good and am hoping someone has a nugget of wisdom or two to help! Btw comments about the difficulties of having large breasts don’t help me.

Thanks in advance!

I'm very flat chested but I haven't ever really thought about it. I'm slender so would look ridiculous if my boobs were bigger. Also clothes. Clothes hang perfectly. But that's about me 🙂 that you were bullied at school is awful. I would suggest getting fitted properly for a bra if you haven't already. Makes a real difference.

Porcuine20 · 22/09/2026 07:08

I can identify with some of this - I’m AA cup at most and one side is slightly more developed than the other so I’m wonky too. I was also bullied horribly growing up (for all sorts of things as well as being flat chested - but the worst incident was being grabbed by bullies whilst getting changed for PE, before putting my crop top on after a shower, and held in the corner half naked and crying while they invited everyone to come and see how flat my naked chest was and laugh at it).
I’m 46 now and my best confidence booster is wearing padded bras in a size bigger than my actual size (I’m a 34AA - optimistically - but wear padded 34B bras). It gives me just enough shape under clothes that I feel ‘normal’. My partner has always been very accepting and prefers smaller boobs too which really helps. The last thing is just appreciating all the things I do have, including my health - I’ve lost a couple of friends to breast cancer in the last few years which really puts things in perspective. I’ll take my small healthy boobs any day. Oh, and I’ve taken up running in the last couple of years and actually appreciate not having to even think about boobs jiggling around.

TakeTheDog · 22/09/2026 07:26

I don't know if this helps but I was bullied badly for the opposite, my boobs grew overnight when I was in the last year of primary school. It was horrendous to feel so self conscious.

As an adult, I have always hated them and I am very envious of smaller chested women. I do a lot of exercising and they are a hindrance. And even though I'm slim, I always feel fat because I'm so top heavy. It's not womanly or sexy. I would love to have surgery but can't justify the cost/surgery risks.

Many women feel the same.

wherearemypeople · 22/09/2026 07:40

I wasn't bullied, but was "first bra" size for years and then simply below any scale after breastfeeding. My ex did suggest implants but I am not the kind of person who wants to have pointless operations to insert plastic bags into me.

I did find it really hard to feel confident - at the time showing cleavage.was very fashionable so most tops were just not for me.

I remember seeing a popstar on TV who was really flat chested but absolutely confident and it somehow flipped a switch so I just didn't care anymore.

I expect it will be harder to get over due to the bullying - but working out which clothes suit flat chested women helps a lot - generally high necked (very fashionable right now), or jumpers with roll necks and if you like necklaces long beads/pendants look good.

I tried this once - very embarrassing if you are actually too small for any, she just didn't know what to say.

violetcuriosity · 22/09/2026 07:59

Honestly I completely get that this is hard for you but I really envy you. I look at my sagging and heavy boobs that make me look bigger than I am and really wish for small breasts. I think small breasts are feminine as I look at mine and just think I look matronly like my mum! 😂

Badbadbunny · 22/09/2026 08:02

People are bullied at school for all kinds of reasons. You’d probably have been bullied for something else if you’d had average sizes boobs. Schools can be cesspits of scum who bully. People with red hair or freckles get bullied. Fat Kids get bullied. Swots get bullied. kids with the wrong colour/make of trainers get bullied. N If you’re on their radar, the brain dead bullies will find a reason!

You have to find ways of accepting you as you are. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking a boob job would cure your issues, it won’t!

Lots of successful people have below average boobs, look at Olivia Newton John - highly successful singer and sexy actress and pin up in the 70s and 80s, with below average boobs!

Don’t let it define you!

Laiste · 22/09/2026 08:03

We all need to accept ourselves and that's the important message.

Sad to see words like monstrous matronly saggy pendulous and 'down to the waist' used here about larger breasts though.

It's possible to boost confidence without kicking down. If a woman was posting here about her larger breasts it wouldn't be on to be describing small breasts in comparison as manly washboardy or childish. Would it?

Seagulldancing · 22/09/2026 08:08

Things go in cycles. I was a teenager in the heroin chic era and friends blessed with boob's were saving for reduction operations.
Work on your self esteem, hopefully the world won't throw anything worse at you than you being upset by your own healthy body.

ItsAlwaysTwins · 22/09/2026 08:16

I love small boobs. I had perfect 32Bs until I had babies. They went up to 32DD and never returned to their former size. I worry that they will sag when I’m older.

We all have hang ups. Don’t let them define you.

Cotswoldmama · 22/09/2026 08:17

I've never cared, all my friends were flat chested too so maybe that helped! In fact when I breast fed I hated how huge my boobs got. They were so out of proportion to my body they looked fake and felt like the first thing people noticed about me!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 22/09/2026 08:20

Self acceptance comes from loving yourself, it wouldn’t matter what size breasts you have. Look in the mirror and tell yourself that you love and accept yourself, that you are perfect.

EBearhug · 22/09/2026 08:20

Anyone who is at least a B-cup does not know what it's like to have really small breasts.

Additup · 22/09/2026 08:25

WhatTheHellsGoingOn · 22/09/2026 04:37

I'm 32B, my breasts are great, sexy and feminine. They still look pretty much like they did in my youth despite breast feeding and going up to a matronly (on my slim frame) 34DD and then back down again.

How is this comment meant to help the OP feel any better, really? The other stuff you said was spot on, but why boast how wonderful your breasts are when she has clearly stated she hates hers? If you had the same size as her, ok, body positivity, but it’s like telling someone who can’t have kids that your 3 are the best thing to ever happen to you and you feel ‘blessed’. Can you not see that?

OP, I’m not in the same boat now but I was the same as you until relatively recently. Serious hang ups about my feminine physique, not helped by an older brother who would make regular derogatory comments, making me feel like shit, and utter embarassment and personal shame that I was somehow abnormal and looked awful and would be judged. For some reason ppl can actually BLAME you for having small breasts (as if you somehow got a say in it and are happy to have them) so feel entitled to belittle you bc your body offends them - it’s fucking crazy. I had relationships but was always incredibly self conscious and it would definitely impact them. It can seriously affect your mental health. When I had my first child I had breasts for the first time in my life, despite hoping that they would come from the hormones of being on the pill when I was younger. Absolutely didn’t work. I even tried natural supplements. Expensive and didn’t work.

My breasts are by no means perfect but most days i still remember what it felt like to have hardly anything there and not really need a bra and it’s something you are aware of every single day. The judgement of others as well as yourself. I really, really do sympathise. It’s something not really spoken about and can absolutely bring deep levels of shame. Boobs are everywhere. It’s difficult to avoid them. They’re intrinsically linked to sexuality and this is pushed on us constantly through the media. Men may have a kind of similar experience if they have a small penis, but that isn’t on display in the outline of their clothes every day like breast size is so it’s not really comparable. It’s not noticeable. There are also women who are size zero and having small breasts matches their general aesthetic and open topped clothes look elegant and good on them. But if you’re a normal or heavier built size it’s worse.

Surgery is a massive step. And complicated to justify as it’s not medically necessary - but it could be argued that if it significantly impacts on your MH it is necessary. It has risks and is extremely expensive, but there are options. Would you be able to get a manageable payment plan? It shouldn’t be something that is necessary but if it can be afforded somehow without threatening your financial security it may be an option. I’m not saying whether it is a good option or not as it is a deeply personal issue and no one should feel compelled to undergo an operation bc of how society makes them feel about their own body.

An alternative is therapy to promote acceptance and boost your self esteem so that you can find ways to manage your feelings and hopefully alter the way you view your body and respond to outside influences in a more positive way. I know you said this was costly, but there are free services out there. Talking about it to another person isn’t easy though, I do get that, but if you can find the right therapist, they will hopefully provide you with the tools to look at your situation in a different way and it won’t have the negative impact on you it has been having.

I wish you the best of luck going forward and please remember that most of the time, despite how we feel, it’s our personalities that ppl are attracted to when they get to know us, and if you are able to project inner confidence (in spite of how you really feel) ppl respond positively and we naturally appear more attractive as ppl generally, regardless of whether sex is involved. The trick is to let any negative comment appear to roll off you without any care and ppl no longer see it as a vulnerability and tend to not dwell on it. Easier said than done I know, but if you ‘don’t care’ then it isn’t a big thing to anyone else usually.

Focus on your positives, OP, I’m sure there are many, and I hope you feel happier about this aspect, or at least less unhappy about it, in the future.

Good luck 🩷

I was pointing out (as someone with a similar breast size) that of course smaller breasts are sexy and they also have the added advantage of staying pert.

I'd assumed OP wanted to hear from women who loved their smaller breasts 🤷‍♀️

DurhamDurham · 22/09/2026 08:27

I’ve always had small boobs, except when breastfeeding. Never bothered me or made me feel less of a woman.
Never had any negative comments from men when younger and single, no complaints from my husband, he finds me attractive and my body is ok for my age. Only snarky comments I’ve ever had have been from women.

I remember a Mumsnet post years ago where the poster uploaded a poster of a bra brand, the model had small boobs, the post didn’t go the way they thought after she said that the woman looked like a child, like a boy, wasn’t representative of normal women. Lots of posters responded to say that they had boobs just like that and it didn’t make them less of a woman. She apologised in the end.

Evaka · 22/09/2026 08:29

Sorry you were bullied. It's left you very confused about body types OP. I am small chested and it's never bothered me - I love my little boobs. I'm 44 and they defy gravity :)

HoldYourHand · 22/09/2026 08:32

SlowDorisagain · 21/09/2026 14:00

Yes absolutely, you should love yourself, nobody else's business etc etc. But also, studies show that rich men prefer small breasts. And I think I read the same about intelligent men as well, but I can't easily google that study.

Men? Why should it be about what men like FFS?

And OP could be a lesbian for all you know so even less concerned what men think.

Good grief! This is about what OP thinks of her own body.

CeeJay81 · 22/09/2026 08:36

I have had a hang up about my boobs since I was young. I think its more the fact i'm out of proportion though, not just Small boobs but a big bum also. At 45 I care less and certainly not enough to go through surgery, which needs redoing every 10 years. My DH is happy with my small boobs and i have learnt what clothing suits my pear shape better.

I suspected something like that, that you probably consider a B cup on the small side when compared to celebrities who are DD etc, but what you don’t understand is that to a woman who has A/AA cup breasts on a 34/36/36+ body it looks completely different to a B cup on a 32 band body.

If you were a 40+ band with a B cup it would not look the same to what you have (32B). Basically, if you have a smaller frame your boobs will look larger on you than on someone with a bigger frame who has the same cup size. Thats why I mentioned size zero’s and A cups looking good bc they look in proportion. Do you see?

Ultimately we come in all shapes and sizes and need to see more representation of this as opposed to the massive boobs on slim women that are still widely popular in the media. Thank goodness that diverse and real representation is becoming slightly more visible now.

I dont disagree BUT, I was answering the OP who has made no mention of cup size or build, other than being 'straight up and down' so I assumed she's slim like me.

The OP also appears to have left the building.

I'm actually really glad I havent had to deal with the extra male attention/objectification or physical inconvenience. You have a normal human body. I'm sorry you were bullied. Stay off social media if it's making you feel bad. I look for the beauty in every woman and in all body types and I always find it. That helps me to find it in myself when I look in the mirror too.

And such great clothes to wear. I follow an influencer who looks fabulous in the clothing she chooses to wear, that suit her slender, small chested body.

I’d love to wear the same style.

Edited

Yes the fashion I can wear now my boobs are small! I love the sleek look. And if I want to be busty I just wear a wonder type bra.
OP can’t you just wear a bra that is padded and pushes you out?

On a college trip to France I noticed a statue of a woman in the Louvre with small breasts. She was very beautiful. I consciously paid attention to art work like that and still do.
