Apparently £63 is unreasonable to spend after a cancelled flight!

I had an easyjet flight cancelled 4 weeks ago.

I submitted for both compensation and refund of expenses. The £63 was made up of dinner the night of the cancelled flight, lunch the next day, buses to and from the airport and a taxi the night of the cancelled flight.

In my mind that’s a really reasonable spend. I’m obviously going to challenge it but AIBU here?!

Dinner was £25 if I recall. Nothing extraordinary just burger and chips.

2 x bus were £9.50 each and the taxi was £7 from the bus stop to the hotel (I had three bags and it was late at night!). Lunch was £15 or thereabouts

It's probably because you're trying to claim for two sets of meals. Presumably you would have had to have bought your lunch the next day, regardless of whether you were here or at your destination. That will be what they're thinking, and I agree....

I’m sorry that you’ve lost your ability to read.

As I’ve said multiple times now, I would’ve been in an all inclusive hotel. So no dinner, or lunch, to buy!

BA went above and beyond last time they cancelled on me. This is my sign to only fly with them!

I also found BA very good when this happened to us. No objection to us staying the spendy airport hotel, which we sorted ourselves as there were no ground staff to advise, and since the flight was more than 24 hours later and indirect with a lengthy stop over we ended up having dinner, breakfast, lunch, and finally dinner again, plus drinks and snacks in between. They paid the lot within a couple of days. I don’t think your expenses are at all unreasonable OP. I’d push back and threaten small claims court.

It’s disgusting, all costs should be refunded aside from obvious stuff like 5 star hotels etc. Who cares if its the weather or air traffic control, they are all not the customers fault. Many people only have money to pay for their holiday, not all this stuff on top.

There's good reason why some issue only attract payment for accom and food.

If you start comping at 261 level for weather there is a danger you start encouraging airline management to be push crews into operating in unsafe conditions...

Airlines can't operate (to any great degree) without at least some ATC for portions of the flight so again, you don't want legislation introduced that might encourage management to push for unsafe operation...

Obviously that would be a bad thing. But there should be rules around that, not comping passengers.

I was cancelled recently too over the recent glitch that grounded all those flights. I was on a work trip.

I had to get dinner, some snacks, pay £8 on buses etc and additional airport parking back at home. All in, I probably spent about £50.

I didnt put in a claim because I knew they would claim it was not an airline fault. They already paid for a new booking and a hotel for the night close by.

Is £63 really worth fighting for with them for months, or even years on end?

I think what gets forgotten is that the accom and feeding obligations that the airlines have existed way before 261 came over the horizon.

The actual, original stated intent of 261 was to disuade airlines from indulging in excessive overbooking , it wasn't intended to replace travel insurance.

More than reasonable the cheek of them .

WhatTheCatHeard · 20/09/2026 11:03

Op your costs are not unreasonable

plus they are probably lying about it being ATC issues

they would have to prove that’s the case and it’s not more likely their staffing issues

look into adr adjudication it’s free to use and easyJet would have to prove why your flight was cancelled
and someone independent will decide if your alone compensation for the hassle ontop of your perfectly fine expenses

Hi OP I had an issue a while ago with British Airways. Horrendous delay and then refused to pay for a reasonably based flight I had booked myself. BA ghosted me when I complained so I contacted Which? As I am a member. It advised that UK airlines have to be members of an arbitration scheme. Chat says for Easyjet this is Aviation ADR but check. I filled in the form whi h took ten mins. Submitted it and they ruled in my favour. Took a month but on principal I was bot going to let this go

It’s the principle of it for me. They owe me that money. I spent it because they cancelled a flight.
