Apparently £63 is unreasonable to spend after a cancelled flight!

I had an easyjet flight cancelled 4 weeks ago.

I submitted for both compensation and refund of expenses. The £63 was made up of dinner the night of the cancelled flight, lunch the next day, buses to and from the airport and a taxi the night of the cancelled flight.

In my mind that’s a really reasonable spend. I’m obviously going to challenge it but AIBU here?!

I was cancelled recently too over the recent glitch that grounded all those flights. I was on a work trip.

I had to get dinner, some snacks, pay £8 on buses etc and additional airport parking back at home. All in, I probably spent about £50.

I didnt put in a claim because I knew they would claim it was not an airline fault. They already paid for a new booking and a hotel for the night close by.

Is £63 really worth fighting for with them for months, or even years on end?

It’s the principle of it for me. They owe me that money. I spent it because they cancelled a flight.

Hi OP I had an issue a while ago with British Airways. Horrendous delay and then refused to pay for a reasonably based flight I had booked myself. BA ghosted me when I complained so I contacted Which? As I am a member. It advised that UK airlines have to be members of an arbitration scheme. Chat says for Easyjet this is Aviation ADR but check. I filled in the form whi h took ten mins. Submitted it and they ruled in my favour. Took a month but on principal I was bot going to let this go

WhatTheCatHeard · 20/09/2026 11:03

Op your costs are not unreasonable

plus they are probably lying about it being ATC issues

they would have to prove that’s the case and it’s not more likely their staffing issues

look into adr adjudication it’s free to use and easyJet would have to prove why your flight was cancelled
and someone independent will decide if your alone compensation for the hassle ontop of your perfectly fine expenses

Tuesdayschild50 · 20/09/2026 10:58

More than reasonable the cheek of them .

Obviously that would be a bad thing. But there should be rules around that, not comping passengers.

I think what gets forgotten is that the accom and feeding obligations that the airlines have existed way before 261 came over the horizon.

The actual, original stated intent of 261 was to disuade airlines from indulging in excessive overbooking , it wasn't intended to replace travel insurance.

There's good reason why some issue only attract payment for accom and food.

If you start comping at 261 level for weather there is a danger you start encouraging airline management to be push crews into operating in unsafe conditions...

Airlines can't operate (to any great degree) without at least some ATC for portions of the flight so again, you don't want legislation introduced that might encourage management to push for unsafe operation...

It’s disgusting, all costs should be refunded aside from obvious stuff like 5 star hotels etc. Who cares if its the weather or air traffic control, they are all not the customers fault. Many people only have money to pay for their holiday, not all this stuff on top.

BA went above and beyond last time they cancelled on me. This is my sign to only fly with them!

I also found BA very good when this happened to us. No objection to us staying the spendy airport hotel, which we sorted ourselves as there were no ground staff to advise, and since the flight was more than 24 hours later and indirect with a lengthy stop over we ended up having dinner, breakfast, lunch, and finally dinner again, plus drinks and snacks in between. They paid the lot within a couple of days. I don’t think your expenses are at all unreasonable OP. I’d push back and threaten small claims court.

It's probably because you're trying to claim for two sets of meals. Presumably you would have had to have bought your lunch the next day, regardless of whether you were here or at your destination. That will be what they're thinking, and I agree....

I’m sorry that you’ve lost your ability to read.

As I’ve said multiple times now, I would’ve been in an all inclusive hotel. So no dinner, or lunch, to buy!

Dinner was £25 if I recall. Nothing extraordinary just burger and chips.

2 x bus were £9.50 each and the taxi was £7 from the bus stop to the hotel (I had three bags and it was late at night!). Lunch was £15 or thereabouts

Omg, we're you on my flight?! We're having the same with easyJet at the moment. Our flight was cancelled and they're refusing one of our taxi fees to a hotel saying it was a private arrangement after our flight was disrupted. Well yes, it was after our flight was cancelled and we only needed a taxi because our flight was cancelled and it was 3.30 in the bloomin morning, we weren't exactly spoilt for choice! Plus the whole thing was a shambles. One young girl to sort 150 passengers. No priority given, we were the last to be given a hotel with two kids, the other last customers to be sorted were the only other 2 families with children one with severe disabilities. Plus, every other flight left that night. I won't fly easyJet again, absolute shambles and poor customer service. Our flight the next day was delayed too! Down to them.

They've cancelled so many. We had a flight cancelled 4 weeks ago. Same as you, one woman trying to deal with everyone. An airport employer, not an Easyjet one. And the flight the next night was delayed too. We got stuck in Copenhagen so I wonder how much other people have claimed and got back! 😬

crypticandmachiavellian · 19/09/2026 23:09

I had a flight cancelled (EJ) due to ATC strikes years ago but the regulations haven’t changed. EJ paid for my expenses of reasonable food (food in the airport overnight and the next morning) and travel, as I had to go to a different airport to take the next available flight. (I went to stay with my parents for the 2 days I was stuck in the UK waiting for the next available flight so they didn’t have to pay a hotel) They did not quibble any of it. I would absolutely push back on your claim which are all reasonable costs for expenses.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 19/09/2026 22:05

The tight arse Airlines ususal response. Not our responsibilty. Cha cha cha.
Fuck off and die!

Its a wonder that they didnt also expected you to sleep on the floor of the Airport and grab a Boots Meal Deal

Straightforward Compensation claims like yours should be resolved within 28 days by law.

Good Luck

cucumber4745 · 19/09/2026 18:56

You are not unreasonable. I had the same happen with two days delay on a return journey. Lost hundreds in wages and they refused my claim and compensation! I took it to ADR and they also refused

Buffs · 19/09/2026 18:50

American Airlines are complete criminals when it comes to shortchanging their customers. I have spent a small fortune on expenses as a result of their delayed/cancelled flights or lost luggage. They make the process of claiming as difficult as possible and then point blank refuse compensation - non negotiable and impossible to speak to anyone. I truly hate American Airlines.

We had our flight delayed with easyJet a couple of years ago and they put us up in an all Inc hotel overnight, provided transport and compo for everyone in the party. That was for something that was in their control so they had to do that for everyone on a package holiday. If your reason was outwith their

I had a cancelled flight with BA a few months back and they settled the expense claim I submitted within a few hours. No quibbling (but I didn’t take the piss with any outlandish costs - not suggesting OP did, of course).

Seems reasonable. I’ve claimed for much more than that and they did reimburse for all of it but it took absolutely ages to come through.
