To feel angry that some people can’t accept sometimes accidents happen? (Title edited by MNHQ to avoid any confusion)

I’m not really sure if this is an AIBR/AIBU but sometimes I see things online/in the local news and people forget that sometimes accidents DO happen which end up with an awful outcome? Do we live in a country now where we will always question things (which I understand), but even those that appear to be logically understandable.

Will we ever manage to balance that intense narrative that everything is ok to the other where everything is planned/sinister? I am so glad we live in a world we can speak freely, but I fear we are starting to overanalyse everything.

(I’m only asking this because I have small children and I’m curious to know how things may go)

(I need to add this is nothing to do with anything s*xual or children being vulnerable in any form, that is not what this post is about)

Is it ridiculous to say I didn’t quite realise how many dense people there are in this country? Until this happened & I started to pay attention

Your post is badly worded with incorrect spelling and abbreviations. Posting about how dense everyone else is seems a bit rich.

Yeah, my BF is from Yorkshire and an accent happened to him.

I’m so sorry @Isittimeformynapyet

I am from Belfast and an accent happened to me too. Then I did the Masters in Voice at a well known drama school and lots more accents happened to me.

Thoughts and prayers.

Just did a hard laugh out loud drinking my morning coffee 🤣🤣🤣

Here’s one. The playwright Aeschylus was walking along one day when an eagle flying overhead mistook his bald head for a rock and dropped a tortoise on it, leading to Aeschylus’ sad demise.

There was a phase locally when a bird of prey kept attacking the heads of bald joggers until the follically challenged were advised to wear caps during nesting season to avoid attracting the bird's attention.
It left some nasty gouges on their heads.

I don't know if the birds have a local accent or cared about the men's accents though.

Princess diana her death was an accident its probably the most investigated car crash ever it was and still is an accident but people still scream she was killed I mean its a pretty shite way to try and kill someone all she had to do was wear a fucking seatbelt and she would have survived

But yeah noah dying was an absolute tragedy but kids drown thats why learning to swim is a life skill

malificent7 · 17/09/2026 06:53

As a likely neurodiverse 3 year old , swimming was probably not on the cards at 3 years old.

There really are no accidents; poorly maintained planes fall but it’s due to carelessness. Children run into traffic but this is carelessness as it’s a well known issue. People drown but again not learning how to swim is careless.

Don’t be so ridiculous. Even the strongest swimmer can drown. Of course accidents or unusual situations can happen. Look at that poor couple in Spain a few weeks ago in the hot tub.

SummerAsh · 17/09/2026 07:18

@AngelinaFibres

Accidents always happen because of the negligence of someone.

That’s a batshit crazy take… not just carelessness as with @CostcoFanofThree but full on negligence!

By your logic I suppose you’ll be calling for the grandfather to be charged with manslaughter, and his parents too for not stopping the grandfather, and corporate manslaughter for the Council for not building an impenetrable fence around it.

When I slipped down the stairs and broke my arm, was I negligent for not buying a bungalow?

A previous poster shows what happens to people mentally when you actually believe you have the power to control for every possible bad thing, stop every “accident” simply by being more vigilant and mitigating everything they do… they become nervous wrecks. Your attitude is at the root of what is literal madness.

Badbadbunny · 17/09/2026 07:23

Most accidents ARE preventable. Very few are genuine “couldn’t be foreseen and unavoidable”. There is usually negligence or incompetence involved.

Yes an accident but caused by a drunken driver and survivable had seat belts been worn, so negligence and incompetence again.

Of course there are accidents. Someone has a heart attack at the wheel, totally out of the blue - their health has previously seemed robust, no reason for them to have stopped driving. Their car ploughs into and kills a lot of other people. Accident.

A toddler or an elderly person tripping and falling - also an accident.

There are loads.

I agree that some situations we call accidents could technically speaking be down to a momentary lapse of human vigilance, but is it really helpful to persecute those responsible for this? Given that all of us are human and therefore 99.9% of us will occasionally be fallible. It's the human condition.

A few weeks ago when it was sunny I was walking from a hospital car park to find somewhere cross a busy road safely.

A wasp started aggressively chasing me and I was so startled I stumbled trying to get away from it but at the same time let out an enormous fart 😳.

A couple walking in front of me and talking to each other stopped dead and were obviously unaware I was behind them but I alerted them to my presence with the loud fart, it meant I kind of half crashed/half staggered into them.
They seemed completely bewildered and didn’t even laugh at the fart because of the sheer element of surprise.

Out of embarrassment and trying to get away from them (and the wasp which was still pursuing me) I stepped back out of their way and onto the road just as a car was coming and the car had to break suddenly.

It is hard to describe such a ridiculous situation and it happened so quickly that it was a shock.
I told people about it later who found it hilarious but it wasn’t funny at the time.
I can laugh now because of the sheer absurdity of it but the car could have easily hit me and it was a national speed limit.

That would have definitely been a freak accident and when I have peri menopausal insomnia on nights like tonight I’ve thought a few times how that would have been a ridiculous way to die.

Is that an example of the kind of freak accident you were thinking of?!
I thought it was a good example of the sort of thing that you definitely don’t plan for or would foresee happening.
I bet the couple walking in front of me have told the story a few times 😆.

what happened to the wasp?

😂
Don't know if anyone remembers Sheena Easton? Scottish singer. Until she came back to Glasgow with the most awful American accent! Got booed off the stage she did 😂

My late budgie loved her. Especially that duet with Kenny Rogers. He wasn’t fussed about the transatlantic accent.

But I agree with the thread title in principle. Some ppl are very unaccommodating of other ppl’s accents.

I have agoraphobia, panic disorder and OCD. Ive had a bit of therapy around magical thinking a few years ago, but I've never heard anyone mention they suffer with it or know what it is. I've tried to explain what it is to a couple of people and I cant 😂
It gets hard to differentiate the magical thinking from my OCD thoughts sometimes🙈
I remember my councillor asked me to write on a piece of paper, "I'm going to win the lottery" and we both laughed, then he asked me to write "my mum's going to die" and I couldn't, I cried, I know the logic is the same but that's mental health I suppose.

What happened to Noah, is literally what i thought would happen to my kids everytime I went out with them when they were his age, that they'd bolt from me and get lost, or I'd have a panic attack and run from a shop to get back in my car and wouldn't notice my kids following me (husband always there), and they'd get hit by a car in the car park. I stopped going out with them even with my husband. It got to the point I wouldn't eat if I was alone with them because I was scared I'd choke and die, and they'd hurt themselves.
I'm trying to give myself some grace and remember I was very bloody ill, but I missed out on a hell of a lot, and I'll always be sad about that.

People saying he shouldn't have been out with someone that couldn't catch him, or why didn't he have reigns, someone said its not an accident, just people not being prepared or careless. From experience, you can't prepare for every eventuality, in every situation. Believe me I tried, and it's no way to live.

Your last paragraph is the heart of this matter - well said.

HPFA · 17/09/2026 07:42

Of course all accidents are preventable if human beings were absolutely perfect, never influenced by momentary emotions, tiredness or illness.

As the above poster says, thinking you can prevent all accidents will drive you into a state of anxiety that in itself could well make accidents more likely.

The whole point of implementing reasonable safety measues in the home, driving carefully etc isn't that these things can guarantee 100% safety. It's to reduce the number of near misses and hence the likelihood of a near miss actually becoming a serious incident.

Comeinsideforacupoftea · 17/09/2026 07:45

I agree with your sentiments OP. Accidents can and do happen however cautious you are. Unfortunately as well situations like cause an absolutely vile and unfair backlash from the underbelly of social media which makes parents terrified to allow their children any freedom. Yes children are precious and vulnerable and it's our job to protect them but it's also our job to allow them the freedom to develop the skills and self-confidence to become independent and assess risk for themselves. They aren't going to be able to do this if we're constantly within grabbing distance of them and stopping them exploring their world. I'm far from neglectful with my 8YO but I do allow her to explore risk for herself. She has climbed trees and climbed to the top of any jungle gym, for example, for many years. I can't count how many times I've had judgy looks or comments for this. It would have been perfectly normal for kids to do this though a couple of generations ago and probably without their parents watching like a hawk and you know what? These kids were, on the whole, happier, more confident and more indpendent for it. The world is scary and we have to accept that we can't fully eliminate risk and we need to stop chastising parents when something bad happens that could just as easily happen to any decent parent.

Squirrelsnut · 17/09/2026 07:46

DS was a beautifully behaved little child. He was biddable and sensible from a weirdly young age.
I was walking with him holding his hand when he was 3, when he suddenly wrenched his hand away and ran across the road.
It took a split second. I honestly nearly had a heart attack. I can still vividly remember the sheer horror of that moment even though he now has a luxuriant moustache and a car..
Accidents happen.
My deepest sympathy to Noah's family.

I believe the vast majority of people who publicly comment on online news articles etc. are generally quite dense. People lack emotional intelligence and critical thinking. There is no nuance in discussions.

Re: this relating to the poor little boy Noah, it’s these types of dense people who turn tragic events into conspiracies and look for someone to “blame” to project their anger towards.

I agree with that.

LattePatty · 17/09/2026 07:46

@TwentyDunhill - I had some similar-ish thoughts / beliefs when my son was a baby that he would die. And I thought I’d caused a colleague’s baby to die because I’d been jealous. My CPN also mentioned magical thinking. It’s truly horrible. I hope you are feeling better now.

I also think on a less dramatic scale that an attempt to remove all risk also causes harm. If you don’t let your child have age appropriate independence then that’s not good for them either.

Some accidents are preventable with reasonable actions. But for some the actions needed to prevent would be disproportionate for the risk or cause their own harm.

my heart goes out to Noah’s family. I can completely understand how an accident like that could happen and it doesn’t rely on the grandfather being negligent. I can’t imagine what he’s going through

We are used to root cause analysis - the plane crashed, it was an accident. Why? the engine fell off. Why? The engineer had not fixed it properly,. Why? Short staffed and penny.pinchong supervisor made him rush.
We are also used to news facts up to date 24/7 and explained right away. If not 'its a conspiracy ". "Some of us fear a cover up. A woman was raped and killed" who did it - a man, "it was an asylum seeker". No description - "obviously asylum seeker. "No, description is a white man. "Oh thank goodness the poor asylum seekers. But it was a man, a man, bastard man. All men are bastards.... "
Sometimes we want it to be who we would like it to be.
