I've seen this a few times and I dont know what is the right thing to do.
So the other week we were at the cinema. I took my daughter to the toilet and as I was waiting for her a man came out of a cubicle with a little girl and went to wash her hands.
It got me thinking.
I feel uncomfortable a man in the womens toilet. I understand how you'd potentially feel uncomfortable taking a daughter into the mens toilets.
And the only other option in this situation was the disabled toilet but morally thats wrong.

I dont know what I feel is right in this situation so wanted to know other people's opinions.
So yabu: its right for a man to take girl into female toilets
Yanbu: he should take her somewhere else...but where?

@Duckduckgander nothing wrong with my comprehension I was replying to a post of yours that didn’t say anything about disabled toilets. Maybe you should check your own comprehension before throwing out silly insults

No you didn't read the initial post that referred to disabled toilet not being available. Have another look.

So what ? They are spoiled . Being treated as above everyone else is the very definition of spoiled . Calling someone spoiled is not dehumanising . That is a gross exaggeration. Thanks for your opinion pet

The Pope is treated by some as above everyone else - is he spoiled pet?

@Duckduckgander so you hear I am from Ireland and you try and get a discriminatory rascist little dig in about “my religion” in even though I’m not actually catholic over a discussion about toilets . It’s laughable how ignorant you are .

Well I cannot comprehend some of your posts because they make no sense . Now can you leave me alone please . I am no longer engaging with a bully

I feel like this wonderfully ironic post bears quoting given a certain posters behaviour and continued personal attacks.

So you think it’s fine for someone to bring the pope into a discussion about toilets because I am Irish and they assumed I was Catholic and wanted to get a dig in ? Yeh grand whatever .

Because the Pope is the most identifiable human that is put on a pedestal above all others that I could think of and cos I'd happily put money on it he has his own toilet wherever he goes. So not a racist pet.

I was in a toilet and there was a mother outside the loo as he son was using it. Thoughts? I felt a bit uncomfortable, he was about 8

So what is the answer for situations where my teenage disabled daughter who needs to be escorted and assisted to the toilet is with a male family member and a disabled toilets isn't available?

Why isn't the disabled toilet available? If this was a frequent occurrence I'd make sure she always had a female carer with her.

We have a disabled relative, I'm very aware of the challenges faced and however we do that other people must always be considered too.

Men should not be in the ladies toilets.

It's not just the case the disabled toilet isn't available, in some older smaller buildings there isn't a disabled toilet. 99% of the time she does have a female carer, me. The only other people that take her out are my parents. My mum is also disabled and wouldn't be able to take her to the toilet.

But why should people have to lay out their whole personal details just so people came weigh up whether they think the person's situation merits an exemption to the perceived rule.

But doesn’t child safety trump privacy?

How won't the child be safe accompanying the parent to the parent's sex toilet? As I said, this way no sexually aware adults are in the opposite sex loos with each other.

It isn't easy I know. However there are always accessible toilets available, carers just need to play their day and route.

It isn't that anyone needs to lay out their circumstances to merit any exemption to anything, the option shouldn't ever be for a man to go into the ladies.

Edited

Well currently the law and 50% of the mumsnet voters say otherwise..

YABU.

What's the worst thing that could happen?

Dads go places at the weekend and at other tines too, with their young daughters. Unless a venue has a 'Family' loo separate from the men's or the women's, it's a far better idea to take a little girl to the women's loos than the men's.

Where I live, dads usually announce 'Girl dad coming through' when they enter the women's loos and nobody bats an eyelid.

Are the women and girls innthe women's loo prancing around naked, or are they simply going about their business and getting out as quickly as they can?

All the women's loos I've ever been into have women and girls in the same state of dress that they would be elsewhere in the building, and unless you want to bring in sex segregated cinemas, churches, shopping centres, public transport, etc, men who want to are going to be free to eye up women or girls (or other men or boys) to their hearts' content.

Helleofabore · 08/09/2026 21:19

Women are sometimes drying off clothing that has had to be washed. I rather regularly see women drying off shirts, sometimes the shirt is off and they are in a bra.

I also spent a couple of years with a pram or stroller jammed in the open door with groceries as I had to walk home. Plus I have also had to take my elderly mother in wheelchair into the female toilets when an accessible one was not available. I had the wheelchair in the door because I could not let go of her to move it.

Female people do have situations where they need the communal area of the toilets to be female only or only with small boys.

So why can’t they do that in the men’s? Are you saying mums should take little boys into the men’s? If not, why not?
