Aibu feeling uneasy about men taking little girls to the toilet in the womens toilet?

I've seen this a few times and I dont know what is the right thing to do.
So the other week we were at the cinema. I took my daughter to the toilet and as I was waiting for her a man came out of a cubicle with a little girl and went to wash her hands.
It got me thinking.
I feel uncomfortable a man in the womens toilet. I understand how you'd potentially feel uncomfortable taking a daughter into the mens toilets.
And the only other option in this situation was the disabled toilet but morally thats wrong.

I dont know what I feel is right in this situation so wanted to know other people's opinions.
So yabu: its right for a man to take girl into female toilets
Yanbu: he should take her somewhere else...but where?

Really?

I didn’t think so, but then I don’t think disabled people accessing disabled toilets should have to wait for a non disabled person, so I’m not the target audience.

I think you're getting the posts confused. The post that I said was funny was the one that pointed out that someone was acting like a pre schooler, or words to that effect. And It was funny, because she was!

It seems they objected to that and reported the post. Maybe they're a tad sensitive, or at least when they're on the receiving end. Not so much when they're dishing it out though, as glibly refer to men generally as " gormless men"

The post didn't contain any reference to disabled toilets. If you'd care to read my previous posts, access to disabled toilets and the related difficulties isn't something I find remotely funny!

I don't refer to all men as gormless just the ones who think it's ok to use the ladies toilets? My dh is lovely and certainly wouldn't be so rude as to barge into women's only facilities.

I didn't report the post? Hope that helps.

I’m sure you did find it hysterical.

I think some of the more extreme pro-men posters have been taking the piss as I don’t believe intelligent women think like that.

I haven't seen any pro-men posts, let alone extreme pro-men posts.
What I have seen is that some posts are from a Child First Approach.

Someone holding or voicing an opinion that differs to yours doesn't necessarily indicate a lack of intelligence, may be just a different view point.

Most of us have opinions on this matter that have in part been influenced by our own personal situation and experiences.

You previously posted that I have a rigid stance, you're totally right, on this I have. I have a teenage daughter that for reasons I don't need to explain has to be escorted and assisted to go to the toilet. Disabled toilets arn't always an option.

Very rarely is my daughter with anyone other than myself. On the rare occasion that she is I'd actually get some sense of comfort in thinking that if the need arose, and a disabled toilet wasn't available that if a male family member respectfully attempted to access the women's toilets with her, that any women in the toilet would display some understanding, tolerance and flexibility.

Can you please stop harping on about how I am dehumanising little girls I absolutely am NOT I am a woman and used to be a little girl. You are the one who is sexist towards little boys . You think it’s fine for them to be exposed to all these imaginary pedophiles .

an adult man is a sexual being and should not be in a women’s only space . A child is not a sexual being and is fine to enter the same sex space of the parent once supervised . Question answered .

now can you answer the questions you have been avoiding about little boys being protected from these pedophiles you speak of and men in womens changing rooms ? Of course you will avoid answering cos you know your argument is a load of crap and does not hold water at all, that’s why

You did dehumanise, hopefully you understand enough not to do it again.

And no, I actually I said if boys too young to manage can go into the women’s toilets, why are you excluding girls? At least girls are the right sex.

You responded with some weird hypothetical question about what would I advise if faced with your Irish communal changing rooms that have no cubicles whatsoever. I have no idea what I would do, as I don’t think they exist in reality and you refused to provide any proof that these are commonplace. If they’re common you should have been able to provide some link about it without revealing where exactly you live.

At least now you’ve answered that you think which toilet is based on the sex of the parent escorting either sex child. I don’t agree. I think little girls have a right to use the women’s toilets and if their carer is a man he is an exception to the rule and has just as much reason to be there as a cleaner.

NullaEffugium · 08/09/2026 17:26

Tralalalala88 · 08/09/2026 13:06

no but women are informed a man is a cleaner and can decide to not take the risk if that’s how they feel

Why can’t they do the same with a dad & daughter? It’s not like anyone is forcing anyone to stay or enter.

Don't forget the " hapless men" that don't wash their hands. I bet lovely dh is very good at washing his hands too.

A woman is a sexual being as well. This is is why they don't take their young sons into the men's room.

The segregation by sex is meant to give sexually aware people (adults of opposite sex) privacy from each other.

But doesn’t child safety trump privacy?

Gloriia · 08/09/2026 17:31

'if their carer is a man he is an exception to the rule and has just as much reason to be there as a cleaner.'

No, he isnt the exception and no he doesn't have as much reason to be there as the cleaner!

Let's just hope enough of us call out these hapless dads and remind them to use the men's as they are indeed men and 3yr old dc go to the designated toilet that whichever parent they are with goes, until old enough to go alone. I have an awful feeling that some posters dh's will be tapping on ladies loos doors to let women know 'a man is here' when their poor dds are 10.

So what is the answer for situations where my teenage disabled daughter who needs to be escorted and assisted to the toilet is with a male family member and a disabled toilets isn't available?

Men’s toilets. She won’t see anything untoward and she’s with her father.

A child with a parent is assumed to be safe. So they are just as safe whichever toilet they go in.

Women and girls who are unaccompanied don’t have the protection so their need and legal rights trump the man and his daughter

I disagree. It’s a valid exception to me and 50% of the poll.

You can call out these dads but there will a good chance that the mother of the child or their other female relatives will also disagree with your view and even if they did agree they might disagree your suggestion to publicly confront a dad with his small child present. That could quickly become an adverse childhood experience for a child.

There was a thread on here a few months ago about seeing an an elderly man escort and help his elderly wife into the women's loo. The disabled loo was not available.
So many people said he should have taken his wife to the mens.

Women and girls who are unaccompanied don’t have the protection so their need and legal rights trump the man and his daughter

Wait so a child with a mother is assumed safe whichever toilet they go in, but that same mother unaccompanied is not safe?

I am sure you didn’t mean that.

Why would I need protection in the women’s toilets if I went in unaccompanied from one man plus his toddler girl?

Why would I be assumed safe if I was in the women’s toilets with my daughter and then saw a man but not safe if I were not with my daughter?

Is this a way of saying we women should always go to the women’s toilets accompanied by a child to be safe?

Men’s toilets. She won’t see anything untoward and she’s with her father.

So it's ok for a 16 year old female with bowel and bladder problems who mensturates to use the men's toilets. Just to avoid other women from encountering a man who is clearly engaged in taking care of a disabled young woman. We really do have different view points on this and I really hope nothing ever changes me to adopt a view such as yours.

Yes, you did pet! - you referred to them as precious pets and entitled brats. If only the posts hadn't been deleted we'd all be able to still see them!

The disabled would be the most appropriate place for this person obviously

So what ? They are spoiled . Being treated as above everyone else is the very definition of spoiled . Calling someone spoiled is not dehumanising . That is a gross exaggeration. Thanks for your opinion pet

@Duckduckgander so do you think little boys should go to the women’s as well to poo ? Can you answer that please . Or are they below little girls and should be subjected to dirt and paedophila that @NullaEffugium has said is in the men’s .

in my opinion this is an emergency and is warranted . A 16 year old absolutely cannot go into the men’s it’s inappropriate. Completely different from a toddler whose dad feels the toilet is a bit dirty or might see a few men’s backs peeing . If little girls should not be in the men’s ALL toddlers should not be in the men’s .

Tralalalala88 · 08/09/2026 18:32

@Duckduckgander nothing wrong with my comprehension I was replying to a post of yours that didn’t say anything about disabled toilets. Maybe you should check your own comprehension before throwing out silly insults
