AIBU to find one-issue personalities rather tedious to be around?

AIBU to think the people who make one aspect of themselves their entire personality are extremely tedious?

(Feeling irritated by someone in my life who does this and wondering whether others have had a similar experience.)

I don't think it really matters what the particular aspect is - whether it's a hobby, one's gender or sexual identity, a sporting ability, being a parent, having had an unusual experience - people who only want to talk about one thing (i.e. themselves) and who bring it up at every available opportunity are invariably very tiresome in my experience.

As an example, I was once queuing for an event with a friend and we got chatting to the people in front of us in the queue. This friend brought up his particular "thing" no fewer than three times, despite the other queuers not knowing him from Adam and clearly being completely uninterested in the occasion when he fell off a horse in 1998.

Or maybe I'm just an misanthropic GOW...

I actually used to be like this when I was into feminist groups, the ones that are not in favour of men saying they are women.

It got to the point it was all I could talk about and friends would say 'can we talk about something else?'. Cringe looking back. I did get a bit obsessed. I've moved on from that particular interest now.

Wow, it’s not often one of that pack admits to taking it too far. 👏

I'm not really one of the pack anymore to be fair. Probably why I can now see/ admit it.

I used to know a woman whose husband was a salesman in a Ferrari dealership and she would never shut up about him selling Ferraris. He was still just a bloody car dealer.

I've just had 4 hours of the history of Nintendo consoles. It's not that fun.

Why did you let it go on so long?!

There's autism in my family and we've had to teach not to monologue at people.

My son’s personality is Minecraft.

Is this who you met?

😂 we were a bit reminded...

To be fair I think some of it was probably nerves as it did ease off after a couple of days but it seemed such an odd way to present yourself - he has a really interesting job but he made his sexuality relevant to that too...I did feel I was being "educated" for want of a better word.

Yep we have one of those.

Exaggerated health issues and exaggerated allergies and food intolerance. Aka mountains out of molehills.

She uses some genuine issues she has to manipulate and exert control over people around her.

Most recent example I heard was where she made a big song and dance about not eating an omelette a friend prepared because she doesn’t eat eggs but the same day went out for Belgian waffles with the same friend because by then she only eats eggs sometimes.

She couldn’t understand why the friend was not happy with her.

I have a lovely friend who used to be vocal on all sorts of subjects. However she has recently had a diagnosis of ADHD and now that is absolutely her entire personality.

Having had a late diagnosis of ADHD myself I can appreciate how this makes you rethink your life and past through its lens but, OMG, I can't wait for her to come out the other side and start talking about something else. So I can understand it, but it doesn't mean I like it.

Someone could tell you they're a vegan - for example if you're choosing a restaurant to go to, or you've offered to cook for them - without talking about it ad nauseam.

Yup and many do. Or they just choose not to tell you at all.

The boomer almond mums and their obsession with dieting and weight loss. Oh my GOD I don’t care about how many calories were in the dinner you just made. I do not care that “my Janet” has just lost 5 stone “without any jabs” oh my godddd.

This is not just my mum. This is my mum, my MIL, their sisters and their friends.

All. They. Talk. About.

See I really miss some of the old fandoms. It was fun chatting to different people with a shared interest but who also had their own personalities. You could enjoy a deep dive into the fandom whilst not having to take yourself too seriously.

Now many are more dominated by people who make it their entire personality and if you criticise a character you'll get someone acting like you've just insulted their mother or something. Its sucked a lot of fun out of it for me.

I have a friend who worked in a bar 20 years ago. Despite having a reasonably successful professional career all she talks about is the sodding bar. I don’t know why she didn’t stay there as she clearly loved it a lot more than her successive jobs.

People obsessed with what they eat - noone cares. Eg vegan, vegetarian, lactose intolerant, pescatarian, gluten free etc Crack on- I fully support your choice to eat whatever you want, but I really dont wish to hear about it 50 times a day. I dont GAF what you eat, or dont eat and why or why not. I dont care.

Sexuality/gender identity/non binary etc- same as above. Be whoever you want to be, but for the love of God, dont make it your entire personality. It's tedious as hell. One of my best friends growing up was like this - constantly referencing the fact he was gay and shoehorning it into every sentence. We know. You've told us. We also live in Brighton, the gay capital of the UK. Noone cares.

Being from The North especially Liverpool (Because I am a Scouser and we always yadda yadda yadda)

Being a vegan
Being on a diet
Being gluten or dairy free

Women who can only talk about something through their husband’s lens (Peter / Mark / Richard would hate that…..)

Has anyone mentioned yoga?

Whosthetabbynow · Yesterday 11:36

Zero self-awareness. Zero social skills. No ability to read the room. Bore off.

ladyofroo · Yesterday 11:40

Oooh another one - "mental health". Specifically "I have mental health".

Yes love, everyone has mental health. What you mean is, you have mental health issues. Then it's used as a get out clause for everything. I cant do the vacuuming due to my mental health I'm afraid. I cant give you a lift to the class (even though you've been giving me lifts for the last 12 weeks) due to my mental heath. Sorry I didnt turn up to your birthday meal and left you waiting alone-it was my mental health.

Mental health issues (which is obv a very legit thing when its genuine) is being used an excuse to just be a total selfish arsehole by some people

Ah yes, being a Northerner.... I know that syndrome . I had never known that I was a southerner until I met a Northerner....and then another one, and then another one. Their sense of humour, their friendliness, their lack of pretension. It never stopped.

Agree that one track minds and sole topics of conversation are not welcome.

My 8 yr old, talks incessantly about the history of Nintendo games consoles. He's autistic. Having a n intense special interest, little interest in general conversation and difficulty telling when others are bored of your special interest are strong autistic traits.

I think you maybe just don't like autistic people.

My 8 year old autistic son would absolutely love your 8 year old autistic son 😂

That’s a reach

I feel your pain! I have (or had a friend like this, currently distancing myself)
It was her entire topic of conversation, Covid was a scam apparently to inject everyone with 5G trackers etc, chem trails are poisoning us, all food is being tampered with to kill us off etc. The final straw was when she came to visit me and refused to have a drink in my house because she didn’t trust what the government were putting in the water! 😬 She hasn’t been invited back! 😂

My BIL has a really obnoxious theatre obsession. To the point where he reduced his hours at work, so he'd have more time to go to Wednesday matinees...!

A family funeral of a much-loved uncle earlier in the summer, for some inexplicable reason, BIL wore a bright red sparkly waistcoat, and any time it was commented on, would launch into a "Oh this?! I wear it to the theatre... Let me tell you about X that I saw..." He literally worked the room, telling anyone who would listen, at great length, all about his theatre trips.
I just watched in bemusement as he trapped assorted aging cousins to talk at them, then be completely oblivious as their eyes started glazing over. It's like the world's worst TED talk.

The person you were with has a fixation with this incident from 1998 where they feel it is relevent to them, but they have not realise yet that people who don't know them will not see the relevance.

Having said this, horse riding is dangerous, and some people have been seriously injured after falls.

Some people are just too ridiculous to take seriously.

It is dangerous, but it's the compulsion this person seems to have to tell everyone he meets about this story. Three times he started it and it was abundantly clear (to everyone except him) that no-one gave a shit. Understandably. Just shut up!!
