If your dad didnt bother with you, then showed up 20 years later asking for a kidney for his child - would you say yes?

Not a real scenario, watching eastenders, and have thought about being asked to donate something to an unknown sibling

I dunno, I dont know if I would 🤔

@hotmumshit
I'd say "who's sorry now that they never kept in touch/were a decent human being but still has the nerve now to ask?"
Followed by "only when hell and heaven swap places and you put one of yours on the table right now
So its a resounding NO from me

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 29/08/2026 19:38

Years ago the News of The World slogan was All Human Life Is There.

Which probably somes up the Stories
on East Enders. The Script Writers seem to be struggling and desperate for new story lines.

ElizaJ74 · 29/08/2026 19:52

No what if my own child needed a kidney further doen the line. Or my best friend.
Definitely not to a sibling I didn't know from a father that didn't raise me.

MyEasterBonnet · 29/08/2026 20:02

Weirdly, this is a situation I once dreamed about and it pops into my head every now and then. Not sure why, as I have a great relationship with my dad. But no, I wouldn’t donate to anyone other than my kids.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 29/08/2026 20:08

I’d donate to a child whether they were my half-sibling or not.

My nephew will probably need a kidney at some point but he and I don’t match, and in the UK that makes it too complicated for me to donate to him - if he lived here in the US I would have donated for him to get a kidney through a swap scheme.

BTW to the person who said you can’t donate if you’ve had a blood transfusion - that is not the case. You can’t donate blood in the UK but you can donate an organ.

hotmumshit · 28/08/2026 17:41

Sorry @peachgreen , didnt see this!

This is how I feel

I’m on the register. Happy to give cells/bone Marrow to anyone I match but my organs will be saved for dd only - till I die then anyone who wants my organs can have them

CakesAndCandles1 · 29/08/2026 20:13

I don’t watch Eastenders but PLEASE if this is the difference between donating a kidney which essentially isn’t spare but we can survive without usually, but a close family member might need it one day thats the risk you need to assess.

I won’t put in capitals but I am
shouting from the roof top!
donating stem cells- is relatively pain free, the donor doesn’t lose a thing and can donate again to a relative similar to giving blood.

Please please please register with DKMS or Anthony Nolan 99% of the time you just sit there for a few hours with one needle in one arm and one the other well blood is taken sieved through and returned. It’s a privilege to donate and be a match to someone. Registering is easier than a covid mouth swab it’s just a bit of spit.

get those men to register too as they actually make the best donors due to their bone build.

I pray Eastenders isn’t ruining a chance to save lives here.

Mumtotornadoes · 29/08/2026 20:28

I wouldn't donate a kidney to anyone except my husband or child. Or a stranger in one of those donation chains things where my husband or child is a recipient.

I would donate blood, liver, bone marrow, just like I would to a stranger. If it will regenerate and still be available to donate again. But I would never give away my only spare kidney.

maxslice · 29/08/2026 20:41

I would. It’s about the child’s wellbeing, not my resentment.

maxslice · 29/08/2026 20:44

Politygal · 29/08/2026 18:02

Cheeky. He can give one of his own.

Maybe it’s not a match.

maxslice · 29/08/2026 20:48

Soontobe60 · 28/08/2026 18:05

I would donate a kidney if it were the only option and was life changing for the recipient, whether they were a stranger or my long-lost half brother.

Thank you. So many people on here saying, “No, let the kid die. What do I care? I don’t even know them.” You should be ashamed. And you’d better pray that neither you nor anyone close to you ever needs a transplant. You are horrible people.

HulkHogansHair · 29/08/2026 20:50

Hard one. If I was a match I dont think I could let a child suffer

That is not really fair.
You may not be a match anyway, and if the transplant team detect any sort of coercion or emotional blackmail, it wont go ahead.

I think what is horrible is not being fucked at all about your own biological child until you need something from them.

SergeantWrinkles · 29/08/2026 20:54

Nope

My son was critically ill 2 years ago with multi organ failure including both of his kidneys. I don't need to imagine what a situation like this would be like as it was my life just 2 years ago though thankfully in the end, he didn't need a transplant. I was very thankful I was 'horrible' and still had a spare kidney should he have needed it.

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 29/08/2026 21:19

i would ask the dad asking for my kidney if he would give one to a random stranger first, then I’d give his child one..

Breadfrog · 29/08/2026 21:42

My dad was a fairly normal, involved parent until his marriage to my mum broke down, he met someone else and moved aboard with her and his new children. He then just stopped all contact, ignored all messages and attempts to communicate. I was an adult by then and I still think about him every day.

Now I feel irrationally angry about the nerve of him asking for a kidney for his child, even though this is so unlikely when he's been no-contact for fifteen years 🤣!

Sennelier1 · 29/08/2026 21:42

I have two children and four grandchildren......and only two kidneys. I think I will keep them in case one of my loved ones needs it.

They would test to see if you were a match. A child should not suffer and die because their father is an arse. “ You were a terrible parent to me, so I’ll get my revenge by letting an innocent child die. That’ll show you.” Incredibly selfish and cruel to the child who
has done nothing to you. How disappointing of you.

So you think op or whoever should be guilted into giving their organs away??

They can't force a test.
If someone wont agree to donate then it is a waste of time to see if they are match. And it is so much more than just having the right blood/tissue type.

It is one of those situations where no one truly knows what they would do unless in that situation.

browneyes77 · 29/08/2026 21:58

Not a chance.

I have a Nephew and a Brother who may need one. Mine are reserved for my immediate family and my best friend.

peachgreen · 28/08/2026 16:40

Stem cells, absolutely. I'm on the DKMS stem cell register and would donate regardless of recipient. A kidney, no. Not now I have a child and I'm her only living biological parent. As with money and time, I am saving any spare organs I might have for her!

ETA: Apologies if this has already been posted – I couldn't see it but may have missed it – but the register is here, if anyone wants to sign up: www.dkms.org.uk/get-involved/become-a-donor

Have you ever been contacted? Just looked at the link now and it seems pretty non-invasive. But they do say worldwide so does that mean the probability of being contacted is quite high?

Yep.

It's easy to give away your kidney to a stranger when it's only hypothetical.

Or to think your own child will never need your kidney. I'd never forgive myself if I had donated a kidney to a stranger and my own child then needed a kidney.

If I give a kidney to anyone, it would be my own child. Not a strangers child.

Chocolateistheanswer2026 · 29/08/2026 22:13

I'm signed up to DKMS to donate stem cells to a stranger if needed. The majority of donations are just by blood being taken but sometimes bone marrow is taken. You can sign up to DKMS if you are older than Anthony Nolan's age limit. I would urge people to sign up as you could save a life without losing any body parts.
