Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

A genuinely loving proposal, rather than a performance.

How refreshing.

MyDeftDuck · Yesterday 13:34

It sounds like you have got yourself a kind, thoughtful and lovely partner…….take no heed of what your spiteful friends say……love and commitment is not all about materialistic grand gestures, he knows you, he understands you and he evidently loves you! Many congratulations OP, wishing you well for the future 💐🍾

Selttan · Yesterday 13:34

I think that sounds like a lovely proposal but ultimately all that matters is that you are happy with it.

Your friends sound like mean girls.

Years ago a colleague of mine got proposed to the night before having to go on a work trip in their living room, her boyfriend had planned out a proposal, nice dinner out etc for after she got back but he got so excited and just ended up blurting it out. She loved it and we all thought it was cute. 25 years later they are still married.

Savvysix1984 · Yesterday 13:35

Your friends sound very immature.

excelledyourself · Yesterday 13:37

Congratulations, OP.

To me, that was a perfect proposal. He remembered where he first told you he loved you, didn’t care that you were chilling in pyjamas. I bet he just decided that day that he couldn’t wait any longer to ask you and went with it.

Your ‘friends’ aren’t really friends. They’re shallow, ungrateful, and cruel.

I certainly wouldn’t waste my money hosting them at the wedding, or any engagement party.

BerryTwister · Yesterday 13:37

Yours sounds like a proper heartfelt proposal, not an Instagram proposal.

Figgygal · Yesterday 13:38

Well I think that's lovely too
Your friends are bollocks

KojaksLollipop · Yesterday 13:38

My husband proposed erm, on the job, so to speak, lol. I held him to it!
Every time we see a proposal on the tv or hear of one I mumble “and there’s another better than mine” and we laugh. So here’s from me “another better than mine!” Go and hug your gorgeous and sweet man and have a lovely life together, ignore them!

Lugol · Yesterday 13:39

Congratulations OP. I was thinking while reading how beautiful your proposal was and actually extremely thoughtful. He remembered where you were when he first told you he loved you and took you there. That's actually really romantic. ❤️

Not everything needs to be a huge, fake, performative Instagram moment and life is so much better when it's not.

Sounds like some 'friends' are jealous and it's to your advantage that they revealed who they are now because now you don't need to spend money inviting them to your wedding, nor waste the rest of your life being their friend.

They've done you a favour really.

Enjoy your engagement and celebrate it with those who truly love you🥂

Wheelbarrowracer · Yesterday 13:39

I think it's sad that your friends appear to have become so swept up in the appearance of the proposal, rather than the meaning.

I did not have a romantic proposal. I'll admit, I did kind of think he'd do it in one of the many lovely outdoor places we visited, but in front of the telly worked just fine. As does the way his love, over 20+ years, manifests itself in acts if service- which suits me down to the ground!

PyongyangKipperbang · Yesterday 13:40

Are either of them engaged or married? I am guessing not and this is the green eyed monster.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · Yesterday 13:40

VickyEadie · Yesterday 12:48

I think anyone who says they want a performative "proposal" is vacuous and shallow. Ignore them and reconsider whether they're real friends to you.

I couldn’t have said it better.

Waitingfordoggo · Yesterday 13:40

That sounds like a meaningful and romantic proposal, congratulations! 🥂 Your friends are either jealous or just arseholes.

Pumpkinmagic · Yesterday 13:41

Sounds absolutely perfect. They sound jealous perhaps? I don’t know why they’d bring down your special moment otherwise?

Mrcollinswave · Yesterday 13:41

Many congratulations OP! Your fiancé sounds lovely, he took your wishes of not wanting a big proposal into account, and remembered the exact spot he told you he loved you for the first time 🥹and the fact you were in your pyjamas makes it even better 😂 it will be a lovely story to tell any future children.
My own proposal wasn't very romantic ...it was in the car, on the way to go plane spotting 😂😂

Pearshapedpear · Yesterday 13:41

Sounds lovely OP…. But stop using ‘quite’ thoughtful and ‘quite’ sweet or you’re equally minimising your proposal

Disasterclass · Yesterday 13:42

Sounds like your friends are either jealous or lost sight of how normal people behave. Both in terms of being happy for their friends and what romance really looks like.

Farkinhell · Yesterday 13:43

Please don't invite these 'friends' to your wedding

They aren’t real friends. It’s a beautiful way to propose and it was just you and him - so , not for show ! I would be over the moon with that!

when I got engaged , another “friend” - I use the term lightly - in my friend group also got engaged . Just after me. A big , showy proposal . My proposal was very unexpected and he had the ring ready and it is beautiful- not a massive rock, which I had already said I didn’t like. When I showed her my ring her reaction was something along the lines of how she much preferred a big ring ( hers was huge ) and telling me how much her ring cost ( I had and still have no idea how much the ring cost but I know it was made ) . Anyway, later she slipped up in conversation how they went ring shopping together , and she chose the ring , the day before he proposed . So , the proposal wasn’t unexpected it was clearly for show! I could have said- well he chose my ring based on what he thought I would like so put time and effort into it - but I didn’t feel the need to bring her down because I was secure.

Throughout the first few months of wedding planning she would constantly text me about expensive venues they were looking at ( right after I secured my not as fancy venue ) , caterers they were hiring ( right after I said I was getting in a buffet for the wedding breakfast rather than a 3 course meal , and specifying the eye watering cost of her wedding dress being made for her on the day she saw me post that I had secured my wedding dress from a shop where it was clearly off the rack .

12 years later we are still happily married and they split up within 6 months of the proposal !

Neuronimo · Yesterday 13:45

They sound very crass, immature and insensitive. Ignore them completely and enjoy your engagement Op. I hope that you show them this thread.

Pistachiocake · Yesterday 13:45

You've got a great man.
You need new friends, though.

Sure your husband should be your best friend, but you need others-and these people are not friends!

Brickiscool · Yesterday 13:45

You have the best fiance and the worse friends.

ArganaSpinosa · Yesterday 13:46

Jealous friends!!!! Sounds beautiful to me.

nj32 · Yesterday 13:46

Congratulations, this is how engagements should be intimate and meaningful. He clearly loves you very much and put thought into it. Unfortunately everything today has to be social media worthy but that doesn't equal a long happy marriage. Take no notice and enjoy your engagement!

Cafog · Yesterday 13:46

You need new friends. Dont let this take the shine off your engagement please. It sounds lovely.
