Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

The OP clearly has a catastrophically poor judgement in people if these are her best friends and friends. So makes me wonder about her DP

HideousKinky · Yesterday 13:47

Your friends are shallow and thoughtless and also quite mean-spirited.

I think that's a really touching proposal because it is sincere and from the heart, rather than performative

ginasevern · Yesterday 13:48

Congratulations OP. That's one of the most romantic things I've heard in years and the stuff that films are made out of. Sounds like you've picked a good one there. As for your friends, they sound like a bunch of vacuous, Instagram obsessed bitches. They'd probably want their proposal on an Italian beach surrounded by white doves whilst behaving like screaming harridans because someone wore the wrong shoes.

Blueuggboots · Yesterday 13:48

Are YOU happy with the proposal? Fuck them if you are.
all these ridiculously over the top insta proposals look fake to me.
your fiance found a meaningful place to the two if you. I think it’s lovely.

BeanQuisine · Yesterday 13:48

Sounds OK to me. Probably best not to turn a proposal into an elaborate song and dance, in case of rejection.

One boyfriend proposed to me over a candlelit dinner at a very expensive restaurant. Luckily we'd reached the dessert stage, as my apologetic "no" rather put a damper on things.

He was despondent and no longer wanted his chocolate torte, so I ate it.

RheneasAndSkarloey · Yesterday 13:48

My husband proposed to me while we were stuck in a motorway traffic jam. Been married 30 years.

NewLifter · Yesterday 13:52

Congratulations op - this is all so beautiful 😍 I love that you didn't tell him what they said.

Your friends sound absolutely awful, I hope that you will not involve them in your wedding plans.

user85642879067 · Yesterday 13:53

We were looking in the windows in the jewellery quarter in a far east country while we were on holiday. “Look how cheap those rings are!” “D’ya wanna get married?” 😂
That was 35yrs ago…

pigsDOfly · Yesterday 13:53

Sound like your friends think the only sort of proposal that counts is something that they can post on social media for the likes.

They don't sound like good or kind friends. Certainly not the sort of 'friends' you'd want as bridesmaids.

Your finance proposed in a sweet, romantic, thoughtful way that meant a lot to him and he thought/hoped would mean a lot to you.

He sounds lovely and so does his proposal.

Congratulations.

pomeglamate · Yesterday 13:54

OP, that proposal story is so sweet it made me tear up, and your friends are behaving like fucking losers. It’s just so thoughtful and emotionally attuned, it shows how much he’s paying attention to the details, how proud he is and how much he treasures you. I imagine they are probably sad because their partners are not as nice. Only you know whether they are generally kind women who are on this occasion acting like bitches, or whether they are actually bitches: review available evidence and decide, but do NOT let them drag you down for a second. Congratulations on your engagement! 🥂

They aren’t real friends. It’s a beautiful way to propose and it was just you and him - so , not for show ! I would be over the moon with that!

when I got engaged , another “friend” - I use the term lightly - in my friend group also got engaged . Just after me. A big , showy proposal . My proposal was very unexpected and he had the ring ready and it is beautiful- not a massive rock, which I had already said I didn’t like. When I showed her my ring her reaction was something along the lines of how she much preferred a big ring ( hers was huge ) and telling me how much her ring cost ( I had and still have no idea how much the ring cost but I know it was made ) . Anyway, later she slipped up in conversation how they went ring shopping together , and she chose the ring , the day before he proposed . So , the proposal wasn’t unexpected it was clearly for show! I could have said- well he chose my ring based on what he thought I would like so put time and effort into it - but I didn’t feel the need to bring her down because I was secure.

Throughout the first few months of wedding planning she would constantly text me about expensive venues they were looking at ( right after I secured my not as fancy venue ) , caterers they were hiring ( right after I said I was getting in a buffet for the wedding breakfast rather than a 3 course meal , and specifying the eye watering cost of her wedding dress being made for her on the day she saw me post that I had secured my wedding dress from a shop where it was clearly off the rack .

12 years later we are still happily married and they split up within 6 months of the proposal !

Are you still friends? Did she come to your wedding?

AsHot · Yesterday 13:55

Ew, are they the perfect Insta addled type?

travailtotravel · Yesterday 13:57

How shallow! It was thoughtful, heartfelt and really meaningful. Also real ... life is more often pj's and not being perfect so this aets the tone that he loves you in all that and not just fluffed up and perfect. Huge congratulations- he sounds like a keeper x

PrestonHood121 · Yesterday 13:59

Congrats! Have your friends ever been proposed to like that? If not, there is the most likely answer. Enjoy every minute!

PussyGaylore · Yesterday 13:59

What horrible friends. You really don’t need friends like this

TheSlantedOwl · Yesterday 14:00

They sound like nasty malicious enemies, not friends. They’ve shown their true colours. Maybe they’re envious, maybe they’re just totally bitches - probably both.

Trishthedish · Yesterday 14:01

My husband proposed to me in a burger restaurant at Oxford Circus, he was so nervous he put sugar on his chips, and we didn’t get the ring for a while afterwards. We’re still happily married 46 years later. Instagram has a lot to answer for. I think your proposal was lovely. Congratulations to you both for a long and happy life together. As for your friends……. 🤷‍♀️

Didimum · Yesterday 14:01

These people are not your friends.

Musicaltheatremum · Yesterday 14:01

Oh FGS my husband proposed to me at the dining table after a preamble about lucky bay leaves in my sausage casserole and how lucky he was to have found me. Total surprise made all the more romantic by it's lack of a showy proposal. I think it means he's grounded and secure with you and doesn't need anything fancy. Enjoy the moment and ignore your friends.

Error404FucksNotFound · Yesterday 14:01

Your friends are twats

Frazzledmum123 · Yesterday 14:02

Let me guess, these 'friends' are very into Instagram and showing off? Seems to be a thing these days that important moments have to be insta ready to matter. Now I love photos, I love the memories they bring back and take loads (for me) but even I didn't care my husband's proposal wasn't caught on camera with me looking like I'd just stepped out a magazine. I had my hair in pigtails and big comfy clothes on and its still my most romantic memory ever that I wouldn't change for the world. Congratulations, ignore your friends. Sounds like a perfect and very authentic proposal to me

macaroon8 · Yesterday 14:03

He sounds sooooooo sweet and excited. Your 'friends' however seem like twats. Don't let them spoil your moment

It sounds like such a great proposal, even if you were in your PJs!

seanconneryseyebrow · Yesterday 14:03

That is exactly the kind of proposal I would love - and tbh even the wedding I would want to be just us, and simple with zero planning.

I think it was adorable. Most important thing is what do you think? Sounds like he knows you very well and did the proposal he knew YOU would like - which means he nailed it.

Congrats OP.

Thelonelyshrew · Yesterday 14:03

I think that’s really lovely and your friends str being really bitchy!

Congratulations x

Yetone · Yesterday 14:04

OP, this is between your fiancé and you. Just ignore these people. Large, showy SM engagements are so fake. We had a very low key engagement and I had no ring ( my choice) but what I have is over 40 years of a wonderful marriage where we have supported each other and are still just as much in love.
Wishing you a lifetime of happiness.
