Am I cooking shit or being stingy??

Hydranga · 06/08/2026 13:44

Currently on holiday with my sister, her husband, their 8 year old DS Amanda 14 year old daughter

i had originally booked it for just me, DH and Ds (8) but I invited them last minute at no cost to them as sister was stressed about money and not being able to take the kids out.

They have complained non stop about the food. First evening we got a takeaway but first morning they asked what was for breakfast so I said I had porridge or Greek yogurt and fruit and nuts. BIL burst out laughing saying “so it’s either prison food or bird food?”. Sister said “don’t you have anything in for the kids?” So I said I’d got the porridge for the kids and I have honey, jam or Nutella to stir into it. Teen rolled her eyes and sister said “I’ll go to shop later and get something in”. Was it really so bad???

that evening I made spaghetti bolognese. 75g dry pasta each and a 600g pack of mince shared between us all with mushrooms, bacon and various veggies. When I served it BIL pulled a face and said where’s the rest of it? They all started laughing - teen dramatically pulled a bit up from her plate and let it fall back down slowly whilst pulling a face. Sister said “what’s up with you?” And teen said “it tastes funny”. They all laughed.

I was getting pissed off at this point and told them they’re welcome to buy and cook their own food if they’d prefer. BIL said “oh here we go, here’s the catch” so I said no I’m more than happy to carry on buying and cooking but not to be insulted and laughed at. DH then decided to tell everyone I’m always on weird diets which isn’t true, I have ibs so I do try and restrict certain things but he made it out to be about weight loss which it isn’t. DS said he likes the food and DN said “yeah but you’re used to eating crap”

So yesterday I refused to cook. They’d bought their own cereals but when it came to evening meal I told them I was cooking a curry for us 3 so they might want to pop to shop and get something in which they did and came back with dohnuts and loads of sweet food. Fair enough.

tonight sister had told me she can’t afford to go back to shop as they hadn’t budgeted for repeated shopping trips. I’ve told her I’m cooking paella and they’re welcome to join us without insults. She said she’d talk to them.

as of 10 minutes ago teen was still asking what was for dinner so she clearly daren’t tell her.

Am I really cooking shit or being stingy?? I’m starting to wonder if it’s me

They are being rude but your portion sizes are stingy!

100gmince & 75g of spaghetti isn’t enough for a meal. It might be the calculated recommend portions but they are tiny in reality and most people would eat more than that.

Couldyounot · 06/08/2026 16:21

Proper bunch of charmers this lot sound (including OP's husband). Are they always this rude?

I would tell your sister and her family that as they don't like the food you're providing on their free holiday, they are welcome to either cater for themselves or fuck off home.

Jopo12 · 06/08/2026 16:23

You family is downright rude! What an awful way to treat you when you've invited them to use your holiday property!
Well done for setting your boundaries, you can't cook different things for different people when there are 7 people. Don't let them bully you!

Your food choices aren't bad, spag bol is an easy meal for 7 people. I would however be planning 800g of meat for that many. 2 grown men and a teen in the house need more. But there's no reason why they can't cook a meal. Or supplement with their own snacks.

Keep on being the reasonable one, then you can hold your head high :-)

Meadowfinch · 06/08/2026 16:23

yanbu. You cook your family decent healthy food from scratch. They are clearly accustomed to cheap sugary breakfast cereals and cheap sugary rubbish (doughnuts etc).
They are also spectacularly rude.

They have a choice. They can eat your healthy, home cooked food or they can waste their own money on more sugary junk (which your dsis says she cannot afford) or they can go home.

When they have gone, you should tell your dh that if he is rude about your food again, he will end up catering for himself.

I cannot believe the ignorance and ill manners of some people. You are not the bloody housekeeper.

LittlePetitePsychopath · 06/08/2026 16:24

I mean, they are guests on a free holiday so they should check themselves and buy some secret food reserves if they need them, cheeky fuckers.

I did think the spag bol sounded small - we're all on the lower side of normal weight, use 600g of mince, and there are 2 adults, a four-year-old, and a baby. We'd usually also have a garlic bread. My children like food and I'm not a big lunch eater!

I don't think it's unreasonable to have a chat with your sister now. If you're still happy to cook for them; perhaps they could contribute £X amount to the food bill to increase the quantity, so you can buy double the mince etc? That'd work out cheaper than them going to stock up on corner shop shit every day.

fishonabicycle · 06/08/2026 16:26

Your sister and family are awful! I can't believe that they aren't grateful that you are not only giving them a free holiday, but feeding them too! Are that always so vile?

Ponderingwindow · 06/08/2026 16:26

Your portion sizes are too small. As a host I never want my guests to leave the table hungry.

Your guests are rude. They should not be commenting on the food.

We had a family member that whenever we visited, everyone learned to bring snacks in our suitcases because we would lose unsafe amounts of weight during short stays. Once we all had children, we put our foot down and took over the meals.

As for the food itself. I can’t judge that fairly. I am allergic to every single dish you listed and would not be able to eat any of it.

As a guest I would come prepared for that and have discussed food in advance since I won’t just happily eat whatever I am served. That is what your guests should have done as well. They could have volunteered to be in charge of a hearty breakfast each day.

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 15:05

Her food isnt good sorry.

Dont invite normal people and offer them granola 🙄🙄 and watery bolognese

Make an effort for God's sake or dont bother!

As for the holiday - if its self catering, and youve rented somewhere with a massive kitchen, youre hosting!

I have said and will say, they should offer to pay towards food.

Are you the sister?
How on earth do you know her food isn't good?
You absolutely can make a delicious bolognese sauce with plenty of veg. I would also add that mince is expensive now, and padding out bolognese with veg and lentils is an excellent way to bulk out a meal. Especially one that is being served at no cost to people who apparently are contributing very little other than criticism and complaints.

Lipglossed · 06/08/2026 16:28

Are they all very fat OP and your family are more average sized or thin?

This is the subtext I’m getting. If so they are probably reacting to your food as a defence mechanism cos deep down they know their diets are messing them up.

All the same, they sound really disrespectful and I honestly think you should tell all of them that directly. At the very least they ought to tell their kids to be polite - not join in with their rudeness.

If i agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

JoshLymanSwagger · 06/08/2026 16:30

@Hydranga Tell them it's not a prison - they can fuck off home if they'd prefer.
From now on they can buy/cook hah their own food.
Don't bother inviting them for food again.

Oh, and your "D"H can take a turn in the kitchen too.

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 15:48

No sorry, only offering granola to your guests on their holidays isnt appropriate.

You offer a proper range of food

That said, as ive said - you wouldnt be rude to the host.

The sister and family have been given free accommodation, are having all meals paid and cooked for, if they aren’t happy with granola then they can provide their own food. OP isn’t hosting them she has invited them so they can get away.

OP have you offered your sister and BIL the kitchen and suggested they make a meal for everyone?

Mumtotornadoes · 06/08/2026 16:40

If someone let me join their holiday I would do a huge shop and make sure there was enough food for everyone. I would offer to do the cooking at least half the time. And I wouldn't make a fucking peep if I didn't like their cooking.

They are are so incredibly rude.

I'm not a fan of porridge, I'm a cereal or bacon sandwich for breakfast kind of person. So I'd have brought cereal and bacon. If I didn't, I wouldn't criticise your perfectly normal food.

It doesn't matter wether what you eat is "normal" surely they know you, they know what your appetite is like

MsPrufrockk · 06/08/2026 16:42

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 16:18

If you invite someone to a holiday home, with a kitchen youre looking forward to cooking in, youre a host!

Its a matter of opinion i guess, but imo, the op is the host. The family should have insisted on providing food/reimbursing for food costs and offered to share the cooking load

IMO the ungrateful family should be offering to wash up and letting @Hydranga know exactly how thankful they are for her kindness. As others have said she's not 'hosting' them, she's given them a free bloody holiday.

Simonjt · 06/08/2026 16:42

The first dinner portion wouldn’t be enough for me, but like most normal people I wouldn’t say anything and I would get myself something to eat afterwards. Complaining when someon else has cooked for you is really rude.

Meadowfinch · 06/08/2026 16:43

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 14:49

Fatty and tasty are the correct adjectives

Honestly - if you have to break down the calorie contents of PORRIDGE offered to your guests - you are not being a good host.

Next time op, head to waitrose (or aldi) and pick up a load of breakfast stuff

Pastries
Pancakes
Bread
Bacon
Eggs
Sausages
Tomatoes
Black puddding if thats your thing
good butter
Fruit
Jam and marmalade
Lots of juice
Tea
Coffee (if youve got a machine/cafetière) - if not, offer to uber eats in a Starbucks

Edit following below comment - maybe rich is what I meant. Just good quality bolognese, we know how this tastes (well some of us do, going by this thread!)

Edited

Christ, @gayestgal most people would be the size of a house if they ate even a quarter of that for breakfast. Are you American?

I’m British and breakfast at mine is
normally wholemeal toast, butter, marmalade, fruit and coffee/tea/water. Porridge in winter.

No desire to block my guests’ arteries.

Favouritefruits · 06/08/2026 16:47

Is anybody else astonished at how much bolognaise people eat 🫣 I’m overweight and I usually cook 250g mince for a family of four! I’d do a whole bag of 500g pasta though!

You do realise that I am not... saying that the guests would eat them all, at the same time???

You do a big shop so that everyone's breakfast needs are catered for, and the big shop should include the above, as well as granola for the poor souls who want that on their holidays.

I disagree @MsPrufrockk , the op is hosting

I dont say anywhere that the family shouldnt have behaved differently, but no, the op is the host.

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 16:09

You are being nasty but its fine.

Your portions are too small and your breakfast offerings did not sound appealing to me or to your guests.

They're not the OP's guests. If I had invited my sister and her family to a holiday cottage that I had paid for I certainly wouldn't be paying for all their food and cooking for them and they wouldn't expect me to either.

GreenSedan · 06/08/2026 16:52

Hard disagree @gayestgal

The OP is generously sharing her holiday with her sister. In return, her and her family have been extremely rude and ungrateful.

How can the OP be the host in holiday accommodation. Don't be ridiculous.

Which is fair, we dont have to agree

But i do say that the 'guests' absolutely should offer to pay for food and split the 'hosting duties'

You're pretty obsessed with the idea that bolognaise with veg in is watery. Sorry if that's the case in your house, but at the hands of someone who can cook, it just isn't. "Animal Fat" is not a synonym for "flavour" or "quality" in the kitchen of anyone who's cooking level gone past the level of a uni student in their first-year in halls.
Not everyone wants to live on grease and stodge - fine for those who do, but if they're invited on a free holiday and given free food, they should either raise the issue politely away from the dining table, or keep their traps shut and buy snacks during the day.
