Am I cooking shit or being stingy??

Currently on holiday with my sister, her husband, their 8 year old DS Amanda 14 year old daughter

i had originally booked it for just me, DH and Ds (8) but I invited them last minute at no cost to them as sister was stressed about money and not being able to take the kids out.

They have complained non stop about the food. First evening we got a takeaway but first morning they asked what was for breakfast so I said I had porridge or Greek yogurt and fruit and nuts. BIL burst out laughing saying “so it’s either prison food or bird food?”. Sister said “don’t you have anything in for the kids?” So I said I’d got the porridge for the kids and I have honey, jam or Nutella to stir into it. Teen rolled her eyes and sister said “I’ll go to shop later and get something in”. Was it really so bad???

that evening I made spaghetti bolognese. 75g dry pasta each and a 600g pack of mince shared between us all with mushrooms, bacon and various veggies. When I served it BIL pulled a face and said where’s the rest of it? They all started laughing - teen dramatically pulled a bit up from her plate and let it fall back down slowly whilst pulling a face. Sister said “what’s up with you?” And teen said “it tastes funny”. They all laughed.

I was getting pissed off at this point and told them they’re welcome to buy and cook their own food if they’d prefer. BIL said “oh here we go, here’s the catch” so I said no I’m more than happy to carry on buying and cooking but not to be insulted and laughed at. DH then decided to tell everyone I’m always on weird diets which isn’t true, I have ibs so I do try and restrict certain things but he made it out to be about weight loss which it isn’t. DS said he likes the food and DN said “yeah but you’re used to eating crap”

So yesterday I refused to cook. They’d bought their own cereals but when it came to evening meal I told them I was cooking a curry for us 3 so they might want to pop to shop and get something in which they did and came back with dohnuts and loads of sweet food. Fair enough.

tonight sister had told me she can’t afford to go back to shop as they hadn’t budgeted for repeated shopping trips. I’ve told her I’m cooking paella and they’re welcome to join us without insults. She said she’d talk to them.

as of 10 minutes ago teen was still asking what was for dinner so she clearly daren’t tell her.

Am I really cooking shit or being stingy?? I’m starting to wonder if it’s me

I think the portion size is too small, I know it says 75g on the pack but I would do myself around 100g at least and I’m underweight. My adult son works want 150g, it’s akin to the tiny recommended amounts of cereal 30g which is like a baby bowl half full! Also as others have said I would have about 1kg mince for that many people. Besides that is just their fussiness so they should cook their own.

MiddleAgedDread · 06/08/2026 15:55

it's a family holiday, you're not hosting them at a B&B or running a hotel! Your food options sound fine (maybe a bit light on mince and pasta portions for some) but do you not know how they normally eat? I know some kids who'd be more than happy with porridge or yogurt for breakfast but others who won't eat anything from rice krispies or cocoa pops and white toast, so I would just take porridge!

No sorry, only offering granola to your guests on their holidays isnt appropriate.

You offer a proper range of food

That said, as ive said - you wouldnt be rude to the host.

My point is that your idea of a 'proper range' isn't universal. I've read your list of everything you think a proper host offers for breakfast, and there are things I'd eat but literally nothing but the coffee that I'd especially want to have. Nothing about your list would fill me with joy or make me think it was a great treat. Obviously I'd pretend it was a lovely breakfast, but that doesn't mean you actually have cracked it so that absolutely everyone would love what you serve.

IronEverything · 06/08/2026 15:58

They wouldn't get another bite from me. And I'd tell them to fuck off home too.

They were invited last minute (to the point where they had already done their food shop for the week but it was mostly frozen stuff which would have defrosted in the car)

My food isn’t low quality or watery. The bolognese was made with red wine, fresh herbs and good beef. 75g of pasta is the recommended portion size and it’s what’s DH and I always have. Someone up thread say they normally have 150g each?!
the garlic bread was also a good one, not a cheap baguette

im not hosting - this is my holiday too. I invited them as I felt bad for sister, but I’m still on holiday myself

Honestly that portion size is fine. And you had the garlic bread!

Like you say - you are not hosting, you are trying to have a holiday too. That does not involve cooking 7 people 3 meals a day!

The paella sounds amazing too. Leave them to it!

There'd be some granola there for you too, and some tap water. 💐

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 06/08/2026 16:01

It doesn't sound like they're getting a bountiful feast, but why the hell should you be providing that for them?! They're cheeky bastards, direct them to the nearest cafe and tell them to crack on.

Delatron · 06/08/2026 16:04

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 15:46

I the padding it out with veg makes it sound watery and untasty

That said, I dont wish to be mean to the op and if she likes it, i'm sure her husband and child do.

I do think though op, that yabu in that you are the host and are expected to provide meals (not all meals) that everyone will like.

And providing 'one' garlic bread is also a bit off - one garlic bread between 6?!

Look your ideas on portions are just off - sorry. So maybe it was a garlic baguette- a couple of slices each. One would be enough. How much garlic bread would you eat? On top of a bolognese and pasta dish?

outerspacepotato · 06/08/2026 16:06

You don't like it, go get your own. In fact, since all you do is complain about the free food you're getting, go the fuck home.

They're being deliberately over the top rude so you'll get them what they want for dinner. They're taking advantage of you and it's time they got some manners or go home. Tell your husband if he doesn't like your food, he cooks for himself.

Stop feeling sorry and doing such huge favours for these freeloaders. They get an inch, they take a mile and they're nasty and rude on a free holiday. They're assholes.

It is a proper range of food! How entitled would you have to be to claim that a choice of cereal was inadequate for your free breakfast!

You must be a poor cook, or have very unrefined palate if you don’t like what OP has offered. It’s perfectly mainstream, balanced food. If they’re lucky there will be cake after today’s baking.

You said yourself that you’re not a normal weight - which suggests that your portion sizes are not normal either.

im not trying to be nasty and i hate bringing peoples weight up but you’ve not exactly being very nice to me either!

What?!

ONE loaf of garlic bread is NOT enough for 6 people!

She’s got to be trolling, surely!

What are you baking? I’m starting to get peckish now! 🤣

Are you in the uk? Can they go home if you decide they’re ungrateful arses who are spoiling your holiday?

You are being nasty but its fine.

Your portions are too small and your breakfast offerings did not sound appealing to me or to your guests.

I am a good host. I offer a range of food for my guests. And I wouldnt dream of inviting someone to a holiday home, without having a plan to feed them all!

How am I being nasty? You’re saying my portion sizes are too small yet neither myself, nor my husband or child are underweight. So how do you work that out?
Also it wasn’t one garlic bread, it was 2 large ones shared out.

OP posts:
downtoearththensinksthesun · 06/08/2026 16:15

I wouldn't like the breakfast at all so would go out and get some.
The dinner sounds sparse, I would always cook too much rather than too little.

That said, they were incredibly rude and there is no excuse for that.

Chaarlene · 06/08/2026 13:58

Fattypuffs vs Thinifers. The holiday was never going to work.

The Fair to Middling, I loved that book!

in case anyone thinks I’m on the wrong thread, the book had characters called fattypuffs and thinnifers.

Betterthatthan · 06/08/2026 16:16

It sounds like the bil and the teen who are the main problem. For him to say 'here's the catch' suggests a right chip on his shoulder about his free holiday, and for her to openly call the food 'shit' and do the disgusted pantomime of dropping it off the spoon as described suggests a deeply horrible attitude. I think they will definitely be unpleasant about the paella! So you either have to fund their choice of food along with the holiday or else stick to your guns about them feeding themselves.

You have restraint, OP, bil would end up with bolognese over his head if I was in your shoes!

THEY ARE NOT GUESTS... THEY ARE THE OP SISTER AND HER FAMILY WHO HAVE BEEN GIVEN A FREE HOLIDAY

They are completely not guests. They have been given a freebie and are complaining ungrateful idiots

Ok, you said it was one initially, now youve upped it.

Saying a portion size is too small, when asked on aibu isnt the same as having a dig at someone's weight, which I am sure you know full well. Its alright though

I am fed and happy, just like my guests are when I host them

If you invite someone to a holiday home, with a kitchen youre looking forward to cooking in, youre a host!

Its a matter of opinion i guess, but imo, the op is the host. The family should have insisted on providing food/reimbursing for food costs and offered to share the cooking load

Morepositivemum · 06/08/2026 16:19

Sorry but ye all should have gone shopping together if you were all to eat together. I think my kids and myself would have been a bit shocked at porridge etc for breakfast, breakfast on holidays is pastries and fruit and cornflakes or a fry up!!! The bolognaise sounds quite small stretched between so many people to me tbh too

JudyTeeny · 06/08/2026 16:21

If my children had been so rude to their auntie, they wouldn't be getting anything to eat until they apologised properly. OP your food sounds absolutely fine, it's a pity your guests are so rude and ignorant.
