AIBU to think everyone does what Betsy and Dylan did?

I can tell when they're lying, they're not very good at it! We've always been a family that talks openly about these things - I worked in a PRU and taught sexual health for years so it's always been an ongoing conversation with my children as they grew up!

I only watch the soaps occasionally. Often there is a murder in eastenders, emmerdale and corrie, all at the same time. This doesn't relate to my life at all. We don't have regular murders where I live.

How many murders in corrie this year? Billy and theo, anyone else? Emmerdale has had so many murders and kidnapping and fires. Its just normal to kidnap someone over something. Even kidnap a vague relation and steal their kidney. Nope. None of that happens in my life either.

All this violence on telly just normalises violence and bad behaviour. Its not good for society. It's all doom and gloom. Give me a nice rom com instead.
In fact, the soaps used to do romance and comedy, now there's no comedy and every romance ends in disaster.

I don't even know who Dylan and Betsy are. Let alone what they've been doing, though it appears to be another disaster. However, how many teenagers watch Corrie?? Very few, so what is the point of the storyline? And how is this family viewing?

P.s. who else has been doing strangulation in corrie? Ken Barlow? Steve? The people at the pub? Dev? Tyrone and fizz? The mind boggles.

Do you have any evidence for this, even if it is just the Metro? I find this very hard to believe, all the data focusses on the airway being restricted. There is no safe 'breath play'.

Horrifyingly my DS has said he and an ex tried it when they were 19 after seeing it in porn. They’re both horrified now at what a risk it was.

One of my DDs has dumped two boyfriends for doing it randomly during sex. She’s very open about her dislike of anything like this (she hates things around her neck to the point she can’t even wear a necklace).

Blimey. Corrie has changed since my seven year old used to watch with his Grandmother

but the point id ask is why do we need a tv soap to tell people, why dont people research these activities online before trying them etc

Hollyoaks has always been brilliant for factual information. They were the only ones who covered HIV factually and without drama. Combined with Geordie Shore, they allowed easy discussions for my then teens (now 31 and 29) and their peer group.

It's something I enjoy but don't do due to the risks, but I don't think "everyone" is doing it.

My point with that was that nobody can ever claim that they thought she would like it. Everyone who has ever met her knows she has a serious dislike of anything touching any part of her neck. So it’s happening even to young women who are very vocal about it being a no-go.

Many many people don’t. And some likely think watching lots of porn is research as a scary number of young people don’t seem to realise it’s not real

Hence the massive increase of young people, especially girls, ending up with injuries from anal sex as one example.

Thank you for this thread. DGD and I have talked about these things before now, and they have been discussed in her PSE classes. It made it easier for me to remind her yet again about all the things she can say no to.

Omg with older teens this storyline freaked me out as Corrie has form for doing storylines on things that are trends.

I think the idea is to open dialogue. It might prompt a teenager to speak to a parent or sibling about it - that a friend has tried it or their boyfriend/girlfriend has mentioned it or tried it.

teens are an impressionable age and the porn that is widely available can been seen as “the norm” even by porn standards
