But young people are doing this. We get regular info from the police in school and it is a rising problem mainly due to porn. It also links to the rise in misogyny/incel culture in young men.

Even people who talk about 'choking' during sex don't usually mean strangulation. They just mean they like their partner to put a hand on their throat as a dominance/restraint thing, not that they're being literally choked or strangled. Most people who do that aren't actually having pressure applied, it's just a hand on the throat.

My sons are in the 25 - 36 age group and it's not something they think is common, because I've talked to them about the Corrie storyline! The younger generation maybe, I don't know. It's certainly something I'd be talking to them about if I had teenagers. Unfortunately I think that open access to porn on the Internet has normalised some pretty repugnant sexual acts 🙁

I’m glad they’ve done this storyline and I’m going to use some clips in school.

I also cover some PSHRE. We teach about consent, we also teach about the dangers of porn. It is a fine line to use language the kids understand and give them clear information without ending up with a parental complaint about too much information, but I am very clear on what consent means and that porn is artifice.
There's an amazingly cringe worthy film our students watch whereby the girl says ouch, not meant to hurt when he's fingering her.
We operate a safe space and let the kids use terms they use. Sometimes it feels a bit "lalalala fingers in my ears cos Miss is talking about rude stuff" 😂 but if they are not old or mature enough to discuss it, they shouldn't be doing it.
I think a lad made a joke about kink shaming once, which led quite nicely into not everything you see is real/wanted/the norm. And how experimentation needs consent and safe words. We emphasise health, safety and consensual above all else.
But yes, our teens are subject to only fans, the likes of Bonnie Blue, the idea of blowjobs or anal being par for the course.
So if they think rough sex/strangulation etc is the norm, it is our job to dispel that without judgement/making it forbidden fruit to aspire to.
It is a tricky job but worthwhile when they thank you (I am happy to answer anything to be fair, as ignorance means STIs, unwanted pregnancy, potential accusations, warped sense of what is expected, no idea of female anatomy, no info on pep or prep otherwise). I no longer have to do the condom demos thank God 😁 but I'm glad others do.
I don't watch Coro and don't think our teens do but if it gets them talking, is on in the background or their mums watch it 💪🏻.
I think Netflix's Sex Education did a decent job for the teens as well.

Im in my 60s now and in all these years I have never been "choked" during in sex, and no partner has ever tried it or discussed trying it. Has all this come to attention because of the proliferation of porn every where we look nowadays?

I still do the condom demo !!! I teach in an all girls school so my approach is possibly different. Lots of girls tell us about disturbing messages they get from boys. We do a lot about consent, boundaries, resisting pressure, coercive control etc..
Easy access to porn has normalised some of this and it’s frightening. Had a big discussion with my Y11 about the likes of Bonnie Blue and girls being pressured into things. The messages they receive from men are horrendous, even on Y7. Roblox comes up a lot for inappropriate messages with the younger ones.
I think a lot of parents are extremely naive about what is actually happening.

Oh and you only need to look at the rise in defence claims that the murder of the woman was "sex play gone wrong" to realise that strangulation, whether accidental or deliberate, needs addressing.
It is like Andrew Tate, and misogyny in general. You need to discuss it properly without making young people feel judged. It will be interesting whether the social media ban has any effect in future.

I don't watch Corrie but I am glad they have included this with the outcome, non-fatal strangulation is dangerous for the person being strangled and, to me, it's very important that this message gets out.

But the characters are calling that nonsense out! "Is that the boy who super-glued his hand to his face?", rather showed how stupid someone who said it was OK and everyone does it, is in another context.

I use clips from the soaps quite a lot in lessons. Hollyoaks did a whole series called ‘this is abuse’ which were really useful and they did an excellent storyline on county lines.
