AIBU to feel hurt by DH’s comment after sex postpartum?

SillyPeachAnt · 02/08/2026 10:24

We’re both in our late 30s and have three children. Our youngest was born in March, so life has been pretty chaotic. Between the baby and the other children, we honestly haven’t had much time just the two of us.

Last night, the two older children were at DH’s parents, so we had some time alone and were in the mood. We had sex for the first time since having our youngest. It was actually really lovely to have some time together as a couple.

Afterwards, DH casually said, “you’re not as tight as you used to be.”

He didn’t say it in an explicitly nasty way, I don’t even think he really realises what he said and the conversation moved on afterwards, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.

I know bodies change after having children. I’ve had three children, including a baby just a few months ago and I’m not expecting my body to be exactly the same as it was years ago. I think what upset me was more the fact that it was said at all, especially in what felt like quite a vulnerable moment.

I am thinking of speaking to him about it this evening. The thing is, I don’t think he meant to be cruel. He is a good husband and a very involved dad I don’t ever feel as though I am doing parenting on my own, he often says being a father has been one of the best things to happen to him. He’s such a dad, always on dad mode. He’s actually currently out with the children because the weather is nice he picked them up and took them out and I’m going to meet them at a cafe for lunch soon.

I think that’s partly why I’m unsure how to approach it. I don’t want to make it into something bigger than it was or accuse him of trying to hurt me, but I do want him to understand that the comment has stayed with me.

I had this said to me by ex husband after our first born ,it stayed with me along time . I'm now with.a new partner and 8 kids later he assures me the that the being lose after havingamy children is myth . Of course we are not teeneagers and we have functional body parts but theydo go back to normal

Sorry about that it’s a disgusting comment to make especially at someone who’s given birth to your children. Glad you’ve got a new partner and wow 8 kids not sure where you live but we’re in Barnes we could not fit 8 kids in our house so congratulations🧡

He’s a great father and husband despite this comment. I like being married to him and I’m glad that we can be intimate again. I plan to speak to him about the comment then move on from it I don’t plan to hold resentment over a comment that I know he didn’t mean. I guess I’ll see how he reacts then I can make my decision but usually I’m able to speak to him about anything that’s bothering me and we are able to solve issues together.

OP I'm sorry to derail a little bit. But you've said in this post you plan to discuss it with him, move on and not hold resentment. You've also said similar things on other comments.

How are you doing this? I'm not questioning you, I'm genuinely looking for advice. Your husband has upset you, you're angry and hurt, how do you let go of that and not let it pop into your head and hurt you all over again now and then? How do you look at him without hearing it? How do you have sex with him without worrying he will say something else hurtful? How do you not live on edge waiting for the next hurt?

Again, I'm not trying to interrogate you here or say you're wrong, I'm genuinely seeking your wisdom!

I don't think there's a single answer because people, and relationships, are rarely that simple. I also think it depends on whether it’s a pattern of behaviour.

For me moving on doesn't mean deciding that I'm no longer upset or promising myself I'll never think about it again. I don't think we have that much control over our emotions. If it pops into my head again, it pops into my head. I don't see that as failure, I see it as just being human.

What matters more to me is what happens after the hurt. Does the other person genuinely understand why it hurt? Do they take responsibility without defensiveness? Do their actions afterwards reflect what they've understood? That's what gradually restores my sense of safety not just the conversation itself. Just because I’ve addressed how the comment made it doesn’t mean that all is forgotten.

I also try to remind myself that people are more than the worst thing they've said just as they're more than the best thing they've done. If I reduced someone their worst moment, I'd be ignoring everything else I know to be true about them. Equally, I don't believe loving someone means pretending they didn't upset or hurt you.

So I suppose I don't really "let go" in one conscious act. I just try not to let one painful moment become the only lens through which I see an entire relationship whether that’s friendship, marriage, family relationships etc. For me, that's the difference between remembering something that upset me and allowing it to define everything that comes afterwards.

And does he understand why you were hurt? What did he say in response? Not sure why you're so reluctant to comment on that part?

I’ve explained why I am reluctant plenty of times not sure how else to be more explicit.

@SillyPeachAnt your approach to conflict is admirable. I guess my question to you is does he behave the same way, i.e. is this generous outlook towards life reciprocated in the same way in how he responds to when you hurt or undermine him unintentionally?

This isn't really the place to get dispassionate advice on this topic, is it! :-)

It really just doesn't make sense, OP. You've kept engaging, you've shared other quite specific details, and yet you've entirely avoided saying a vague, 'he was really apologetic and felt terrible for upsetting me in a moment of stupidity, so I'm happy to move past it'.

That's up to you of course, as you're not obligated to share anything at all, but it does seem an intriguing choice to keep engaging and sharing on the thread, but not to mention that one aspect.

You really don’t like not knowing do you…

Findingithardnow · 03/08/2026 18:05

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it.

I'm sorry again to derail the thread slightly! I'm glad you've got a resolution after your conversation with your husband, and I hope your husband appreciates you and never does anything like that again!

pollymere · 03/08/2026 18:34

You just had a baby. And I'm sure you can use tampons still.

It's a complete myth that you lose any muscle tone there but I guess it can take a while to get back to where it ought to be. It's more to do with hormones than tone.

The most important thing is to sit him down and tell him such comments are ignorant and hurtful. Husbands can be very stupid sometimes. Hopefully he'll apologize.

I really don't care, I'm just explaining to OP why people might find her posts a little odd. I'm more interested in the general topic though, the way the OP has done so much emotional labour while her husband has done none, and the way some people are shifting the blame onto the woman and how she reacts in the situation instead of the man for saying such a hurtful thing in the first place.

Yes and it’s why I am comfortable enough to have this outlook. We both need to be on the same page for it to work otherwise there’s not really much point in me having this outlook with him. It wouldn’t really work.

Not derailing at all.

Yes I’ve definitely got a resolution thank you and yes I hope that too it’s never been a pattern so we shall see. I’ll reassess again but based on our conversation I don’t think they’ll happen.

I’m happy to answer any questions from those who are genuinely curious not just asking to later insult me under the guise of solidarity because I believe we aren’t binary or monoliths and acting as if they know me personally xx

Oops one got there before I commented. Yeah punish him and weaponise sex. Thays alway a plan.

Shitty behaviour weaponize sex grow up .. how about she tells him how insensitive he was .

Tuesdayschild50 · 03/08/2026 21:51

The comments from posters on here are awful you came for advice but get attacked.
Im sorry he said that to you it was incredibly insensitive at a vulnerable time your baby is only months old.
I hope after talking to him he takes on board how he hurt you.
This is marriage the fact you still want to have sex with each other are attracted to each other can get over problems and insecurities together is a good marriage.
When talking to him though id speak in a way that shows him you won't take a comment like that again.
For your own confidence get on the pelvic floors in a few months you might find he is saying the opposite .. don't weaponize I've never heard such shitty advice.

What a truly saddening post. The bitterness in your words speak volumes about your own experience.

OP realised very early on that many of the replies didn’t align with her own values and resolved things herself in a measured and responsible way, reflecting the value she clearly places on her marriage and everything it has survived and been strengthened by.

That you would talk about someone you have never met and know nothing about in such insulting terms, and try to twist her emotions into something so destructive and clearly marriage ending is really concerning.

Lol. What a ridiculous response 😃 Sorry to disappoint you so dreadfully, but two caesars left my vag as tight as ever 😆 Not that that's why I had two caesarians and not that I tried to make it into a competition, or even mentioned the fact that my vag is still tight - but since you're dribbling utter nonsense we'll just get that out of the way.

Projection is so real on this site.

Weird that you would report my comment, and even weirder it was taken down, when all I said was her husband either went out of his way to be verbally abusive to her, or he's as thick as mince and she will never, ever forget this.

Nothing remotely reportable in that.

I wouldn’t be prepared to share the details after the way the thread went almost from the start. OP clearly doesn’t share the MN collective opinion that all men are shite. Hopefully she’ll think twice before asking for ‘advice’ on AIBU again.

Her choice then really. She won't need any by the looks of it as they are both adults who can have adult conversations as she keeps saying over and over again.

PinkyFlamingo · 04/08/2026 11:17

I've spoken to my husband, but people are still making assumptions about me "letting him off lightly." I'm not even sure what that's supposed to mean when I haven't shared what was actually said in our conversation

And you don't need to of course. But it's very puzzling why you can't see this is the reason people are making assumptions because you won't detail why your DH actually said? You just repeatedly say things like the above....

I agree with pp that your comment wasn't worthy of deleting.

It's funny how, if you have high standards for husbands, people tend to accuse you of hating men or being bitter, when really it's more likely that you have a very decent husband, who you just can't imagine doing such a horrible, cruel thing!
