AIBU to snap after my mum kept calling a bike a trike?

i am looking to get my daughter her first bike. She’s 5 and has had a balance bike before but never a real bike. Everytime I speak to my mum she asks me if I’ve found a “trike” yet. I keep telling her it’s a bike I’m getting, 2 wheels” and she always says “oh yes, you know what I mean”.

Well this has been going on weeks and literally everytime I speak to her she asks about the “trike” and I constantly correct her and say “bike”. She does have a habit of asking the same question for weeks at a time and she also has form for deliberately saying the wrong words for attention and it’s tiring.

this morning I was at my mums and my sister was there. I went to toilet and when I came back my sister said “not being funny but isn’t DD old enough for a proper bike now?” I asked what she was on about as I am getting her a proper bike and she said “mum! You said she was getting a trike!”

So I lost it, screamed and shouted “stop saying it’s a fucking trike!! You know it’s not so just fucking stop it”

my sister said “Jesus Christ is there any need for that?” So I told her she’s been saying trike for weeks and it’s winding me up so she said “she gets mixed up, there’s no need to scream like that” but the annoying part is she doesn’t get mixed up!!! She does it on purpose and has been doing this for years!

Probably, though it's the kind of thing only you can know.

I agree with others that you need to talk to her less about this kind of thing if you feel she's purposefully missaying details to upset you.

Because evryone knows that Bi means two and Tri is three and 5 year olds don’t have three wheeled cycles

Some 5 year olds have 3 wheeled cycles. Some adults do too - my adult daughter has a trike because she finds it easier to use and it has a larger basket on it than a bike could have without a trailer, which for her balances out the cons of it being slower than a bike.

It is an old fashioned word. But the word is not what you are angry about.
You are angry because she won’t use the word you prefer. And stop using the word she is used to.
As for screaming at her. Crikey.

A bike and a trike are two different things.

It's not a matter of preferring one term for an object over another equally correct term, or even preferring one modern term over an older term.

GloriousGoosebumps · 01/08/2026 15:59

I've voted that you're being unreasonable because you know your mother is trying to wind you up yet you still "bite," Next time she wants to talk about trikes, talk about trikes, she'll soon stop if she's not getting a rise out of you.

No, I would not call that gaslighting. Gaslighting isn’t being annoying by not caring enough to distinguish between two very similar, often equal things. Gaslighting is making the person question reality.

That’s what you picked up from my comment?

Im well aware of what gaslighting is. Doesn’t mean other people don’t accuse DHs of gaslighting over everything on MN.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 01/08/2026 16:02

Omg I would have done the same. It just feels like a lack of love - like you're not worth paying attention to.

To me, this is the equivalent of ppl who say ‘house’ when they mean ‘home’ in conversation with a flat-dweller

I've never thought of that. I always say 'your house' - to a few people I know who live in bungalows. Wonder if I'm annoying them?

A bungalow is a type of house, so why would they find it annoying?
Houses don’t have to have more than one storey.

TheBrunswick · 01/08/2026 16:03

I'm, unintentionally, winding up dgs.
I keep calling him by ds name.
Then yesterday when watching a film with Jim Carrey as the lead I mentioned 2 other films he was in but it was actually Mike Myers!
I'm honestly not doing it on purpose but dgs is getting a bit irritated.

I do know the difference between a bike and a trike though. 😇

Contrarymary30 · 01/08/2026 16:05

I can't ever imagine screaming and swearing at my mother for whatever reason . That is less acceptable than using the wrong word for a trike /bike . Get a grip .

Crayo · 01/08/2026 15:56

People saying it might be dementia - it’s NOT!! She was doing the exact same thing when I was a child and she was in her 30s!!

the bonsai episode was just more of the same - mentioned it once and then was asked about it for weeks whilst she deliberately used the wrong word

in that case, you'd think by now you could ignore it because face it if its deliberate she just pwned you big time.

Megifer · 01/08/2026 16:06

I have a relative that says bokkle and hospikal. They know it gets on everyone's tits and yes it is done for attention seeking. DP will have similar behaviours sometimes e.g. asking stupid questions like "so how do I cook this microwave meal" - he knows the instructions, they are on the packet, all attention seeking and look at me being so useless/unable to talk properly/being thick.

It gets weary but I wouldnt shout. I now ignore DP completely when hes like that and the relative gets a "sorry i dont know what you mean" - try that with your mum.

GinaandGin · 01/08/2026 16:06

I would have done the Sam's
It's irritates tulhe heck out of me when people don't listen/ call things the wrong name

Haven’t you ever said “im thinking of getting DC a xxxxxxx because they are outgrowing Xxxxxx”.

It’s quite normal. I’ll realise something needs upgrading and then start saving for it.

Last time I mentioned I thought ds was outgrowing his home it was 3 months before I got a new one. Because I noticed in January when we didn’t go out much on it and decided I’d wait until the weather was nicer in case he had another growth spurt before purchasing a new one for the summer where he’d get lots of use from it.

AgnesMcDoo · 01/08/2026 16:07

Screaming and swearing over a mild annoyance.

YABVU and out of order

BigBrownBoogyingBear · 01/08/2026 16:07

My mum has for for this OP and it is really frustrating. I'm not sure why she does it. It's been happening since I was a child, so not dementia or recent cognitive decline (my Dad does have dementia so I have some experience of this).

You were wrong to lose your temper and swear at her. But I feel your pain.

I find the easiest strategy for me is to ignore it.

Have you bought the trike yet?
Yes, we have bought her a Isla bike, they get great reviews and are really lightweight. Here's a picture.
Does DD love her trike?
She's figured out pedalling really quickly, we're really proud of her.

Just deprive it of oxygen.

It grates because it is showing you that show your mum doesn’t listen to you and isn’t taking an active interest in your and your families life. If she has always done this, it is to annoy you and you’ve let it. Hard as it is you need to ignore this behaviour to protect your sanity. Be mindful what you tell her in future if she goes on about things to annoy you. If it’s new then yes it could be dementia but it sounds like she likes pressing your buttons.

NullaEffugium · 01/08/2026 14:51

I really could not let this bother me. To be at the point where trike vs bike throws you into swearing and shouting in public at your mum indicates you have anger issues. Get a grip.

I suspect it indicates mum doesn't read the room very well or that she's deliberately teasing.

Crayo · 01/08/2026 14:58

Omg my mum did the exact same thing!! I did karate (although only ever got to brown belt) and my mum continuously called it Judo.

there are so many examples of this behaviour over the years!

Do you pronounce it “Kah Rah TAY!” like Ross from Friends OP?

AIBU to snap after my mum kept calling a bike a trike?
SouthLondonMum22 · 01/08/2026 16:09

You know she was trying to wind you up so why rise to it? Why the need to correct her every single time?

Stop talking about these things to her and if it comes up, ignore her using the wrong word, stop correcting her and she'll soon get bored if you don't react.

itsgettingweird · 01/08/2026 16:10

CruCru · 01/08/2026 15:51

The thing is, I think this would actually be more unkind than just shouting at the mum. Back when I was young, people would say things like “We need to get your head checked” (as a threat). This is the same sort of thing.

The OP doesn’t think her mum has dementia, she said that she does this sort of thing on purpose and has for years. Not every irritating thing that someone does is down to dementia (if they are over 60) or being neurodivergent (if they are under 60). Sometimes people are just a bloody pain in the arse.

That’s the point!

OP knows her managing and doing it on purpose.

It’ll annoy her mum if OP suggests it’s because her mum is unwell and ignores the purposeful spite behind it.

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 01/08/2026 16:11

Nah you're fine. My mother is staying with us for 3 months like she does every summer. I often lose my shit over the small things. I feel bad but it's relentless.

grumpygrape · 01/08/2026 16:11

pouletvous · 01/08/2026 14:50

Because evryone knows that Bi means two and Tri is three and 5 year olds don’t have three wheeled cycles

No, not everyone knows, and that doesn't address the issue of how the OP knows her mother is doing it deliberately.

She may be, it might be ignorance, it might be mental health issues, all I wanted to know was how the OP knows it's deliberate. Her medical qualifications would help.

GentlemanJay · 01/08/2026 16:13

I learnt with my mum to pick the right battles. It’s not worth it.

One day when your mum is gone you will think why did I bother arguing about a kids bike.

Crayo · 01/08/2026 16:14

I’ve been thinking about it and I think the reason I blew up this time was because it felt like she had started the same old shit with DD. I came to the conclusion that she does it with me to minimise everything I do - “forgets” the right word for stuff to show me how unimportant my thing is.

A kids first bike is a big deal and deliberately calling it a trike is like saying “it’s not a big deal” and I don’t want her doing this to DD
