AIBU to think public racist / anti immigrant / anti trans posts can justify dismissal?

Slightyamusedandsilly · 30/07/2026 18:39

Read a couple of accounts this week of racist, public supporters of the far-right being sacked for spouting race / immigrant / trans hate on their personal social media accounts.

One was a doctors receptionist.
The other a school learning support assistant.

Both roles where they are likely to work with people in the groups they're publicly trashing online. One was recorded at a far-right rally, speaking about the amount of immigrants she was forced to support in her line of work.

What is your opinion on this?

YABU - People should be able to express their opinion without fear of losing their job. Freedom of speech.

YANBU - Anyone with any kind of public facing role/a role where their employer is likely disapprove of this should not publicly post this way and needs to understand that being sacked is their own fault.

General question on pronouns for those who won’t use ones they think wrong - are you ok with they/them for either sex, and are you calling trans men she, and comfortable accommodating them in women’s spaces?

Yes

Switchnow · 02/08/2026 15:42

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/08/2026 15:38

Kind of ok with they/them as a neutral although I find it annoying in sentences. I think it’s bizarre that you don’t grasp that any objection to men being called “she” is equally applicable to women identifying as “men”. And yes, they’re women, women’s spaces are not off limits to women of a masculine appearance.

Edited

Better to ask than assume what anyone thinks.

LakieLady · 02/08/2026 15:42

As a private individual, you are allowed in most developed states to express any opinion you hold. However, if you're well known in your professional capacity in any given community, or if your role brings you into contact woth people you are criticising, and have an inkling that your opinions might be offensive, you should post anonymously or reconsider posting altogether. This is especially true of public service employees, who should be even handed and seen to be even handed in the commission of their duties.

This is exactly how I see it, @mathanxiety .

I haven’t found it hard to advocate for single sex spaces whilst also treating people kindly though. Being called She is not sufficient to access female only spaces, any more than calling myself Mrs gives me access to legal benefits of marriage if I’m not married. They are terms that describe something tangible and also insufficient to access that tangible reality. I just don’t think it matters. And if someone refuses, I don’t think it matters either, I just think it’s a bit pointless.

I’m afraid I care more about myself being able to speak accurately than being “kind” to someone else by indulging them in a lie.

In a part of my role I work with mainly immigrants, all of whom I treat with respect and whose individual stories fill me with compassion. However, working on an area with such high levels of immigration has made me more anti immigration not less. Im not racist or anti immigrant, but I have growing doubts about the wisdom of such high levels of immigration (really since COVID) in mainly areas of existing socio economic deprivation. I suspect you'd probably quite like me sacked.

LuckyHazelFox · 02/08/2026 15:51

I call a man a man and a trans woman a man. I call a man he and a trans woman he. I'm not obliged to call them by anything that doesn't sit right with me. As I said earlier in the thread, thank God I no longer work. This coercion is only going to get worse.

I bet you can't voice your concerns at work though - obviously not in front of service users.

Downthedrainwithme · 02/08/2026 15:53

Where we draw the line is the difficult part.

I don't want businesses dictating what your political or cultural views should be and we're increasingly lowering the bar as to what constitutes "hate speech" a term I really dislike as it seems to come straight from the KHB or Gestapo playbook.

There was an example a good while ago where a Christian bakery refused to make a cake for a gay couple and were vilified for it which in my view was wrong on both sides. There's absolutely no reason that couple couldn't have found another bakery and there no reason why a Christian who doesn't agree with LGBT can't respect and accept that community without having to compromise their beliefs.

There's a complex discussion to be had about the freedoms of the individual Vs our responsibility to create a working society. We should not persecute minority groups or people of different sexualities and cultures but in turn those groups do not have a right to force the rest of society to bend to their every whim.

I'm very concerned about the direction the UK is moving on all sides of the political spectrum. People on the left are becoming too comfortable with calling all those on the right fascist bigot's or low IQ idiots and wanting them banned from society the same way as those on the Right are all too comfortable doing exactly the same.

That's a scary road to go down as history shows us that if one of those groups ever gains too much power it becomes all too easy to excuse atrocities when you believe your cause is "just".

They’re on very dodgy ground mandating pronouns in signatures I think. Firstly not everyone “trans” wants to come out of the closet, and secondly it could be seen as harassment of people with gender critical beliefs.

It does help though.

Pre the inclusion of pronouns I'd been exchanging emails with someone called "Robin" for months before I met them, and assumed they were male.

I was wrong! Not only not male, but a very feminine, glamorous young woman. I only found out when someone told me "Robin's female, by the way" an hour or so before I met Robin in a community setting. I'd have been wandering round a public library introducing myself to strange men had I not known, they might have thought I was on the pull!

It made me glad that I always use a shortened form of my gender-neutral first name, and it's not one I've ever heard used by a man.

You could use whatever pronouns you like, including they/them/their if you're non-binary or don't want to disclose.

Tbh, I would be surprised if anyone with gender critical beliefs would want to work for the organisation. The whole culture would be anathema to them. And the interviews always include a disguised equalities question, so if you got a gender one and fucked it up, you probably wouldn't get the job anyway.

It was very PC. Someone reported my mate when they overheard her saying "That's fucking mental!" about something. It was the "mental" they objected to, not the swearing. (Our client group was primarily mental health.)

You've just reminded me. I saw the Free Speech Union advocated on GB News yesterday. I made a note to sign up later.

Yes, I think FSU are really needed right now. They are fighting for people to keep their jobs who have offended the crazy woke ideology of their employers, like the police or fire service who really should be impartial anyway.

I could absolutely go undercover in a genderist org if I wanted to. I would be able to pass the “disguised equality questions” as I have done before. Am intrigued as to why you think they’re so cunningly hidden though. I wouldn’t choose to though.

You have to tread very carefully if you work for the public sector or in a charity or third sector role. The dominant ideology is immigration = good, transwomen = women etc.

However, increasingly people are realising that immigration and asylum is a racket which puts more strain on communities already disadvantaged. A lot of people are getting fed up with it, but we have to be careful to only say what we think in trusted situations. Bit like living under the Stasi, really.

I obviously couldn't, I didn't spot mine!

I don't think they do them for internal applicants. I've been on two interview panels, and I don't remember having to dream one up.

Interesting, real life is complicated. It's like a lot of Jewish and LGB people are supporting far right parties in Europe because they fear the rising power and influence of Islam.

HollyhocksandPeons · 02/08/2026 16:49

The problem goes much deeper - many many many virtue-signalling people in positions of power are anti-immigrant and racist - they pretend the opposite, because their fear cancellation, but if you look at their families, who their children marry (not who their friends are, because it is fashionable to have a token foreigner as a friend) you will see the real picture or its approximation.

It is only stupid receptionists and classroom assistants who get caught, but not the crafty 'professional people'. Clamping down on racists posts only masks things, does change sod-all.

Inclusivity without thought often results in unanticipated consequences! I definitely see that rush to be inclusive no matter what that means for anyone. I think that’s also a consequence of the funding situation over the last 15 years, where funders are either looking to fund ‘inclusive’ (that by definition often don’t meet the differing needs of specific groups) and services restructure or reframe accordingly. And social media has amplified it, so organisations are afraid of the reputational
impact because they are so dependent on the financial landscape.

Spot on. It has proved almost impossible to secure services for women without funders requiring the inclusion of TW.

What kind of thing did they ask you?

The only question I can recall from the interview when I got my first job there is "Can you give an example of an occasion when you've dealt effectively with a crisis or an emergency?". I thought for a moment and then said "Well, there was the time a councillor died during Planning Sub-Committee..." and went on to explain what I'd done, how and why, and what specific challenges it presented, eg approx 200 people who'd come to protest about a specific application, and thought suspending the meeting was some sort of stitch-up.

On my first day, the manager who'd been on the panel told me that they'd struggled not to laugh, because my account of it was like something out of a dark comedy.

Subsequent interviews were internal and more technical, especially when I moved from homelessness prevention/resettlement to welfare rights. I had to do a written test for both my welfare rights jobs!

Btw do the FSU ever represent, eg, SWP supporters? They only seem to cover cases if people on the right.

SWP supporters get a free pass because if you believe in open borders, TWAW, net zero, anti-Israel, all that would be OK in the public sector and left wing people tend to work in the public sector (or community sector where the same applies).

It's the opposite views that would get you into trouble.

I bloody loathe using incorrect pronouns he/she. I hate using they/them but it is the lesser of two evils. Will use a female name for a male too but I dont much like it.

Yes I would call a trans identified woman she but if corrected I would use they/them and avoid pronouns like the plague. And yes Im comfortable with trans identified women in women's spaces, because they are women.

They offered to support Heather Herbert, so yes, they will support anyone, not just “people on the right”.

Yes, here's part of FSU's statement saying they would support Heather Herbert who was arrested by Police Scotland for a vile social media post about Ann Widdecombe:

"The Free Speech Union has said that, should Heather Herbert join the Free Speech Union, we would do our best to help him."

I want to do this and I envy you greatly. Im lucky in that I can be a bit more firm as I run own business now, but it still creeps in. As I said I avoid, and if pushed then they/them. It will be a cold day in hell that I use she/her for a man though. In my view that is selling women out and I wont do that.
