AIBU to think public racist / anti immigrant / anti trans posts can justify dismissal?

Read a couple of accounts this week of racist, public supporters of the far-right being sacked for spouting race / immigrant / trans hate on their personal social media accounts.

One was a doctors receptionist.
The other a school learning support assistant.

Both roles where they are likely to work with people in the groups they're publicly trashing online. One was recorded at a far-right rally, speaking about the amount of immigrants she was forced to support in her line of work.

What is your opinion on this?

YABU - People should be able to express their opinion without fear of losing their job. Freedom of speech.

YANBU - Anyone with any kind of public facing role/a role where their employer is likely disapprove of this should not publicly post this way and needs to understand that being sacked is their own fault.

Sorry, coming back late to this but where does your organisation get its funding? My experience of local DV and similar organisations is much like @5128gap - if they don’t toe the self ID line the funding is removed.

Much of the funding for the groups I know comes from local authorities (just this week Labour, LibDem and Green LAs have announced they will not comply with the law and will maintain self ID policies) and large charities/NGOs with Stonewall champion alignment. A condition of funding was alignment with DEI objectives including self id. Staffers who tried to make a rational case for separating services (so accommodating trans women but as a separate group) were forced out or forced into @5128gap position of trying to work out whether to leave or stay and try to mitigate the negative impacts.

20 years ago this was rarely an issue and as you say - trans women I’ve known for decades know perfectly well they are biological males. Its over the last 10/15 years that funding came with absolutist self ID conditions.

Hard to say without outing myself, we have had long term unrestricted funding but also have some HNW donors. We will work with trans women but we protect single sex spaces.

I do accept it has been very difficult for organisations in a different position, we’ve been fortunate enough to be able to be firm (but not outspoken). I’m sympathetic but I’m also frustrated by how many women inside the women’s sector capitulated to the vocal minority. I would have rather left than compromise.

You can find it however you wish, I have never found it difficult to day ‘Linda is a trans woman, therefore she is not eligible for our female only group’. Linda is a trans women, therefore she does not need a cervical smear. Larry is a trans man, he would like to join our female only group.’

It’s easy to say. You might find it hard, and I accept there are many timid voices who do, but don’t assume we all do.

It won’t do him any good.

Just seen that he has put out an apology.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2026 12:21

And it speaks directly to some of the issues raised on this thread. I don’t want to be coerced to say or imply that I think some men are women.

It happened a good while ago so I don't remember the exact details but my point was I believe there's a way for people with opposing views to coexist without persecution or compromising their own beliefs but it's an incredibly hard thing to do.

Of course those views and beliefs can't be illegal or directly harmful towards others obviously.

The pp has it right, and it’s an important piece of case law around freedom of speech.

I believe the bakery was perfectly happy to make the cake; the issue was the slogan “support gay marriage” which went against their Christian beliefs.

Where we draw the line is the difficult part.

I don't want businesses dictating what your political or cultural views should be and we're increasingly lowering the bar as to what constitutes "hate speech" a term I really dislike as it seems to come straight from the KHB or Gestapo playbook.

There was an example a good while ago where a Christian bakery refused to make a cake for a gay couple and were vilified for it which in my view was wrong on both sides. There's absolutely no reason that couple couldn't have found another bakery and there no reason why a Christian who doesn't agree with LGBT can't respect and accept that community without having to compromise their beliefs.

There's a complex discussion to be had about the freedoms of the individual Vs our responsibility to create a working society. We should not persecute minority groups or people of different sexualities and cultures but in turn those groups do not have a right to force the rest of society to bend to their every whim.

I'm very concerned about the direction the UK is moving on all sides of the political spectrum. People on the left are becoming too comfortable with calling all those on the right fascist bigot's or low IQ idiots and wanting them banned from society the same way as those on the Right are all too comfortable doing exactly the same.

That's a scary road to go down as history shows us that if one of those groups ever gains too much power it becomes all too easy to excuse atrocities when you believe your cause is "just".

I bet you can't voice your concerns at work though - obviously not in front of service users.

Most of the people I work with come from multi ethnic, multi religious countries and have fled war and persecution along ethnic or religious lines. They are far more aware of the risks of a rapid and controversial transformation of the demographic make up of many areas of the UK than the vast majority of the population. Thankfully I don't work for the public sector so conversation is still possible.

TunnocksOrDeath · 02/08/2026 19:32

If you’re saying things that are visible to the public on social media that reflect badly on you, and by extension on your employer, then being expected to adhere to a sensible code of conduct is not unreasonable. Some infractions are appropriately dealt with via a formal warning, some with a firing, and others with just an explanatory chat - it really depends on the nature and severity of the case.

LuckyHazelFox · 02/08/2026 19:27

Heather Herbert and his friends have done the trans community no favours. One tends to feel quite sickened when transitioning men can't conceal their machismo traits. I don't know any women who thinks like they do.

I want to do this and I envy you greatly. Im lucky in that I can be a bit more firm as I run own business now, but it still creeps in. As I said I avoid, and if pushed then they/them. It will be a cold day in hell that I use she/her for a man though. In my view that is selling women out and I wont do that.

Exactly, it’s a red line of mine. I won’t call men a type of woman either. Trans identified males, men who identify as women, or just men.

5MinuteArgument · 02/08/2026 17:05

SWP supporters get a free pass because if you believe in open borders, TWAW, net zero, anti-Israel, all that would be OK in the public sector and left wing people tend to work in the public sector (or community sector where the same applies).

It's the opposite views that would get you into trouble.

You’re hugely oversimplifying. SWP are economically left but not culturally so. I only know a couple of SWP members and they are vehemently GC and pro-Israel, even while Israel has a right wing government. I don’t get the impression from them that they are unusual. Socialists incl the Labour left are conservative on immigration because they see it as diluting workers rights.

The problem goes much deeper - many many many virtue-signalling people in positions of power are anti-immigrant and racist - they pretend the opposite, because their fear cancellation, but if you look at their families, who their children marry (not who their friends are, because it is fashionable to have a token foreigner as a friend) you will see the real picture or its approximation.

It is only stupid receptionists and classroom assistants who get caught, but not the crafty 'professional people'. Clamping down on racists posts only masks things, does change sod-all.

This is an excellent point.

What people say publicly and what they do/think privately are often very different. Many are happy to just play the game.

I call a man a man and a trans woman a man. I call a man he and a trans woman he. I'm not obliged to call them by anything that doesn't sit right with me. As I said earlier in the thread, thank God I no longer work. This coercion is only going to get worse.

They offered to support Heather Herbert, so yes, they will support anyone, not just “people on the right”.

Yes, here's part of FSU's statement saying they would support Heather Herbert who was arrested by Police Scotland for a vile social media post about Ann Widdecombe:

"The Free Speech Union has said that, should Heather Herbert join the Free Speech Union, we would do our best to help him."

The only question I can recall from the interview when I got my first job there is "Can you give an example of an occasion when you've dealt effectively with a crisis or an emergency?". I thought for a moment and then said "Well, there was the time a councillor died during Planning Sub-Committee..." and went on to explain what I'd done, how and why, and what specific challenges it presented, eg approx 200 people who'd come to protest about a specific application, and thought suspending the meeting was some sort of stitch-up.

On my first day, the manager who'd been on the panel told me that they'd struggled not to laugh, because my account of it was like something out of a dark comedy.

Subsequent interviews were internal and more technical, especially when I moved from homelessness prevention/resettlement to welfare rights. I had to do a written test for both my welfare rights jobs!

That sounds like a great answer to that question!

General question on pronouns for those who won’t use ones they think wrong - are you ok with they/them for either sex, and are you calling trans men she, and comfortable accommodating them in women’s spaces?

I bloody loathe using incorrect pronouns he/she. I hate using they/them but it is the lesser of two evils. Will use a female name for a male too but I dont much like it.

Yes I would call a trans identified woman she but if corrected I would use they/them and avoid pronouns like the plague. And yes Im comfortable with trans identified women in women's spaces, because they are women.

Inclusivity without thought often results in unanticipated consequences! I definitely see that rush to be inclusive no matter what that means for anyone. I think that’s also a consequence of the funding situation over the last 15 years, where funders are either looking to fund ‘inclusive’ (that by definition often don’t meet the differing needs of specific groups) and services restructure or reframe accordingly. And social media has amplified it, so organisations are afraid of the reputational
impact because they are so dependent on the financial landscape.

Spot on. It has proved almost impossible to secure services for women without funders requiring the inclusion of TW.

I obviously couldn't, I didn't spot mine!

I don't think they do them for internal applicants. I've been on two interview panels, and I don't remember having to dream one up.

What kind of thing did they ask you?
