To not be surprised a 35 year old with a history of eating disorder would struggle to get pregnant (lily Collins)

In regards to the news lily Collins has welcomed her first child via surrogacy & the whole issues surrounding surrogacy

A few people have questioned why another celebrity has gone down the route of surrogacy when they can afford fertility treatment/time off/therapy if unable to conceive

But surely at 35+ with a history of having an eating disorder she would be, to put it "lightly" basically barren ? & Viewed as such by any professional doctor who understands realistic fertility windows & health

Not saying she didn't/doesn't deserve children but where do you draw the line at the right to have kids versus the reality of some people being unable to ?

I think all surrogacy is impossible to defend.

Supersimkin7 · 01/02/2025 13:40

No one has the right to children.

IncaDove · 01/02/2025 13:41

barren? What a horrible description.

And using a surrogate, no matter the reason why, is exploitation of often vulnerable women.

LunaNorth · 01/02/2025 13:42

Barren? Are you from the 18th Century?

Surrogacy is a flat no for me. There are too many babies needing mothers in the world to be removing the ones that have one in the fourth trimester.

Adopt don’t shop doesn’t apply to humans, though.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 01/02/2025 13:42

Barren is a horrid word, but I agree that surrogacy is also horrid. Not sure what the tone of this thread is though, what, she brought her infertility on herself and shouldn’t expect to be able to have a family? Bit harsh.

Butchyrestingface · 01/02/2025 13:42

I think surrogacy is exploitative so ... 🤷‍♀️

Deebee90 · 01/02/2025 13:43

I’m happy for her. She also wrote in her book that she couldn’t conceive due to various issues. Her little girl will be treasured and loved .

I don’t think you should be so judgemental unless you have walked in the shoes of someone who can’t carry a baby naturally. And don’t give me the old “why not just adopt? Because it’s not the same.

No one has the right to children.

No one has the right to tell another (woman) what they should do with their bodies.

Maybe I’m making a massive assumption, but I’m guessing nobody held a gun to the surrogates head. If she is of legal age, completed the required health and psych screening, why shouldn’t she decide to act as a surrogate if she wanted to?

Personally I couldn’t do it, but she is not me and it’s her body so her choice.

Nah. It's just why would people question "another celebrity surrogacy" when her history & age is just not compatible with healthy conception/gestation/birth

Not to say it's impossible & someone will come along with their own storys of aged 40's+ births & awful health problems that didn't effect their babies but on a whole few women will actually be successful

I don’t like surrogacy except in genuine circumstances but I equally don’t like your post.

I don't give a stuff about how sad somebody is when they rob a child of the primary relationship with their mother in the absence of abuse or neglect. And I'll remain as judgemental as I like, thanks.

Drivingoverlemons · 01/02/2025 13:46

This is a very mean post. I read the news and am happy for her. I don’t need to know the details of why she couldn’t conceive. We don’t know who the surrogate is or what their circumstances are.

No it isn't even close to the same and adoption is not an easy choice nor an easy "solution". I had to make that choice due to infertility. I'm now childless.

Surrogacy is still child trafficking with a nice lump of exploitation of women popped in too.

If a grown woman decides she wants to be a surrogate then why shouldn’t she? Maybe they should have some assessment before they are cleared to be a surrogate to ensure they are fully competent to make the decision.

Funny that no celebrities act as surrogates though, isn't it? That's just for poor women who are exploitable.

Gingernaut · 01/02/2025 13:50

Everyone who says "No one held a gun to the surrogate's head" is being disingenuous

Times are hard, money is extremely tight and if the last thing a woman has to sell is her own body, then capitalism has won

This is human trafficking plain and simple

Fine. I don't like human trafficking, Which is what I think surrogacy is.

Should poor people also have the right to sell their organs (e.g. kidneys) to the rich people?

No one who says this ever thinks of the baby who is created with the intention of inflicting dreadful trauma on it at birth - a primal wound.

Unpaidviewer · 01/02/2025 13:59

I didn't realise she was 35!

Your post is cruel OP. I wouldn't want to speculate on the reason behind anyone's infertility. You can do everything "right" and still have issues.

IsThePopeCatholic · 01/02/2025 13:59

When surrogates have babies, they are creating an adoptee. Why deliberately inflict this on a baby?

SlashBeef · 01/02/2025 14:01

Human trafficking.
