The double standards on here are getting out of hand

A male posts that is his wife is grumpy and complains and its immediately the man's fault: "you're not loving enough," "what do you when she complains," "she complains for a reason," "you don't appreciate her enough," "do you get her painkillers when she said she has a headache."

Yesterday I read a thread about a woman who was considering ending her affair because her husband had been diagnosed with cancer and a few posters told her to continue and not feel guilty.

Another poster wrote about her daughter complaining her father / posters husband was always miserable and lots of posters attacked a suggestion that the posters should try to cheer up her husband. The gist was a wife isn't responsible for trying to make her husband happy.

Therr is a really nasty double standard here and in society.

Boohoohoo

Dry your eyes OP and maybe post on a man's forum if you want to be told how awful your wife is 🙄

Yes and no.

People give advice to others based on their own experience, it's often a projection on their own life, eg the successful ones saying: follow your dreams, a positive advice. The ones who failed and struggled or know people who struggled will advise to be pragmatic and choose a uni course based on job market or to not go all in on a hobby and keep a secure job. Same with relationships. Most people are overstressed and undersexed in long term relations, from looking around me.

Secondly, people are more brazen and direct when it's an anonymous platform. The world IRL really is like this, most people are not rational and wise, most are biased and using this forum to vent, giving out biased advise.

Half the answer is asking at the right place, so stomp up and pay a professional or someone you knoe IRL to have dealt with what you are going through. Online, people post and the replies could be from anyone, sometimes if you only knew how these people live their lives you would never ever have asked them for advice so ignore the crazy or inappropriate comments because people of all backgrounds can post. This is the nature of posting online so the advice source is unfiltered and at times quite unhinged, with hidden agenda or a huge projection of their own life.

In general, life is not split 50 50 men to women, equality doesn't mean the same treatment it means bridging the differences to give fair and appropriate results. There are social and biological differences between the sexes (menopaise, mat leave, women often going part time while dad full time) so of course reactions will be different and it's appropriate that the advice is sometimes different based on sex. To ignore the differences betweeen men and women would lead to inequality.

MN HQ always make it clear that it is a site for all parents. It is not for Mums only. I always report threads where female posters try to chase away male posters. It is completely against Talk Guidelines.

Surf2Live · 30/01/2025 08:02

this is the ONE place in the entire internet that I have found that is woman dominated and women centered for discussions

go onto Reddit and join any one of the many subgroups dominated by men if you don't like what women here are saying

I have learned so much from the women on Mumsnet and I am so thankful it exists. I love how we do not bow to men here.

If you don't like it OP then you can toddle off to the rest of the male dominated internet.

I get so tired of men coming in here to complain, in this case because OP did not get the response he wanted from his thread the other day

I read that thread OP and I swear most of the advice you sought was good solid advice, I think you're fixating on the bits that were critical of you. Being defensive rather than listening. An oh so male response.

It's MUMSnet

the clue is literally in the name

MUMS are women

I'm a woman with no children. I'm not the only one. We go through this every few months. The site has moved on with HQ blessing.

decorativecushions · 30/01/2025 08:02

Yep. This website and countless others are parasitic. If a man behaves even a little bit thoughtlessly it's all 'LTB' and meanwhile women are being encouraged to continue affairs. Misery is company i guess.

DreamyDog · 30/01/2025 07:15

This place is full of divorcees who hate men. They want everyone to be like them.

Or maybe it's full of women who are sick of mens shit and want women to see through their partner's shitty behaviour.

By the same posters?

sure, to include all women (the non penised kind)

and some men

but it's still women dominated and I for one and very thankful for it

Emotionalsupporthamster · 30/01/2025 08:04

Unless you’re referring to specific posters having different standards for men and women YABU. Mumsnet isn’t a hive mind, it’s not possible to say it’s double standards based on the comments of different groups of people posting on different threads.

So am I. MNHQ welcomes us.

Dianapiano · 30/01/2025 08:05

Always report posts where men are pilloried and discriminated against. There are a lot of posters who try to chase away men. MN HQ does act on openly discriminatory posts. Unfortunately, there are a lot of them.

JustAskingThisQ · 30/01/2025 07:16

Putting women first doesn't mean elevating them to a place where they can exploit their power. It does seem that many women do not want equality, they want revenge.

And...?

I'm afraid I see the occasional double standard on here as far less of a problem than the behaviour of some men towards women.

I have read some truly horrific accounts of abuse from me against women on here. That kind of behaviour is far worse and more damaging.

I also think that you'd find the same sort of double standard on a male equivalent to Mumsnet. Whilst men can and do post on here it is mostly women so the perspective is going to be female. Do you think it would be different amongst men? Of course not.

This!

SallyWD · 30/01/2025 08:07

I agree with you. The double standards take my breath away sometimes.

WarmSausageRoll · 30/01/2025 08:07

The vast majority of replies is against affairs it's unfair to cherry pick on a few unhinged morally bankrupt replies and tar the entirety of a huge forum as misandrist and double standared.
I love that MN is prowomen, the entire internet sphere is dominated by men and their disgusting porn can't we have something for us?
You can deregister anytime. I don't like Redditand their creepy pervy subs so I avoid it. Try this?

Nothatgingerpirate · 30/01/2025 08:08

And?
Don't read the stuff, then, if it bothers you.

FootstepAway · 30/01/2025 08:03

Not a clue. I don't tend to remember usernames!

Dianapiano · 30/01/2025 08:09

I am old and I have lived with groups being persecuted and abused because of their race, sexuality and class. I am really unhappy that there are posters who actively encourage animosity against men. It isn't healthy for society. It breeds bitterness and resentment.

likeyoubut · 30/01/2025 08:11

GrannyWeasel · 30/01/2025 07:25

Perhaps it is just different people posting on different threads. It's not as if each post represents the thoughts of the whole group.

This. Why do people pretend there is a MN view? There is not. I’ve been here over a decade and there is huge variety of opinion here.

I note that even in the OP they write ‘ a few posters replied that’. A few? So most did not then.

FootstepAway · 30/01/2025 08:12

decorativecushions · 30/01/2025 08:09

Not a clue. I don't tend to remember usernames!

So why is it weird and parasitic to have different opinions on a website of millions of people? Genuinely don't get what point you are making?

Yes, many people have shitty opinions. That's the same wherever they post or don't post.

R053 · 30/01/2025 08:12

What a strange, venty thread. Women are more likely to post about parenting matters than men, so you are going to get a heavier female take on things on MumsNet.

I am sure there are more suitable forums for those who are sympathetic to men somewhere else. Why do posters here have to moderate themselves for those who feel it’s too female oriented? Divorced women may also lack adult companionship IRL and use forums for support more than married women? Who cares?

Hwi · 30/01/2025 08:12

I am a woman and can't agree more. You are absolutely right. And not just on MN, everywhere - men are horrible white oppressors. I have always found it interesting that the oppressed live longer than oppressors. All that nonsense about patriarchy as well. But this is the way it is, unfortunately.
P.S. Still waiting, as a woman, for a chess match between a biological man and a biological woman, to prove that we are intellectually equal :)

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 30/01/2025 08:13

Oh, and the reason women are encouraged to have a savings? To allow them to leave safely and quickly WITHOUT BEING MURDERED.

Honestly, some of you need to use the brain you were born with. The misogyny, abuse of, and violence against women is still so prevalent in the 'modern' world. Not the other way around. That's why there's a bias in the posts and threads 🙄
