Non-binary colleague using disabled toilet

1000 replies

DefendingPan · 22/12/2024 10:14

Where I work there’s employee male and female toilets, customer male and female toilets and one customer disabled toilet.

This colleague is non-binary, is not disabled, and uses the disabled toilet/ baby change (with their own Radar key) because they “don’t feel comfortable) using either the male or female toilets.

I mentioned to my boss that I didn’t think this was appropriate and got accused of transphobia and threatened with discipline. I was made to feel like I was being offensive and discriminatory for bringing it up.

We have many elderly customers and many young families who all also need to use it.

Was I being unreasonable?

Really not a big deal if that's where they feel comfortable. Pick your battles and let it go.

I can tell no man would say that. Talk to men and ask them if they think being gay is performative because you're having a laugh if that's what you think. That's the biggest load of bollocks I've ever read in my life.

Edited

I think you should read my post again, at no point I said I believe gay are performative, my point is that many people still believe it is.

Also just for the record, by gay I meant both men and women, I admit I should have used homosexual to not cause confusion.

WarmingClothesontheRadiator · 22/12/2024 13:52

No, I mean people who think eventually someone "grows out" of being gay cause it's just a phase, or cause that they're just seeking attention, that kind of people, a lot of them still exist today.

Yes, Stonewall, Pride and various other LBGTQ+ groups.

In my place of work there’s a disabled/gender neutral toilet which I use often as it’s cleaner and bigger (female toilets are tiny cubicles as we all know). I’m neither disabled nor non-binary/trans. I would be really pissed off if a colleague complained

Are you for real? 😵‍💫

Except it IS a big deal. A disabled loo is for disabled people.

Wow, that's really selfish.

WarmingClothesontheRadiator · 22/12/2024 13:50

And then there's the one who think you can "cure" gays

That would be the trans organisations.

Trans organizations aren't the ones who create literal conversion camps where gays are tortured into being straight, it's the religious organizations that do that.

KittenPause · 22/12/2024 13:46

You sound like a petty unpleasant colleague to work with to be bothering with someone's toilet habits

“You sound like a petty unpleasant colleague to work with to be bothering with whether there is a ramp to allow your disabled colleague access to the building”

I've read enough of your drivel to know what you're saying is bullshit lol

verysmellyjelly · 22/12/2024 13:55

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie No, I'm not at all distressed by OP's workplace. I am distressed by the tidal wave of ableist comments on this thread as it once again reinforces what an ableist place this website is and shows how many people think that we (disabled people) don't deserve the few things we have to help us. They can be taken away and given to anyone else even if the impact on us is very negative. And when we try to explain we just get attacked. Happens every time.

WarmingClothesontheRadiator · 22/12/2024 13:56

Tsama · 22/12/2024 13:53

Trans organizations aren't the ones who create literal conversion camps where gays are tortured into being straight, it's the religious organizations that do that.

Trans groups like Mermaids and LGBTYouth sterilise and mutilate gay children.

verysmellyjelly · 22/12/2024 13:56

@Tsama Why are you derailing? This thread is about disabled toilets, it's not a general discussion of trans issues. There is FWR for that.

DragonFly98 · 22/12/2024 13:56

misssunshine4040 · 22/12/2024 11:59

Mind your own business.

I use the disabled toilet at work as it's cleaner and provides more privacy as do many others.
It's no issue at all!

It is an issue for your disabled colleagues, they are just to polite/nervous to tell you.

Tsama · 22/12/2024 13:55

Try looking up Stonewall’s definition of ‘gay’

OneBadKitty · 22/12/2024 13:57

In my work there are only two toilets, one is accessible and one isn't. There are no disabled staff members so everyone uses both toilets. There is no point in rules for rules sake.

I'm guessing the OP has made this scenario up as a counter argument to test the reactions of MN to her previous thread.

ThreeLocusts · 22/12/2024 13:57

OP this thread reads odd - where are the GC mumsnetters today? I see your point: access to the disabled toilet for actually disabled people is reduced because someone without a disability has funny feelz about using either of the gendered toilets. Would annoy me too.

But that's because it seems to me that pretending that you can opt out of being either male or female by calling yourself 'non-binary' is the height of self-indulgence. You don't become some mythical third sex or sexless through a speech act. Demanding special accommodations because of such a self-declaration reeks of narcissism.

Many people don't see it like that, though. They're happy to go along with the magical thinking that has people become something other than male or female through the 'enby' label.

If you're being attacked at work over this, I'd try explaining some version of the gender-critial position, and point out that gender-critical beliefs are protected by law. Then let it go. It's not a hill worth dying on.

EUmumforever · 22/12/2024 13:57

Wow, that's really selfish, why? It’s a very male oriented organisation where female toilets are far between. My other closer option to my office is a shared toilet for ‘staff’ shared by men and women and anyone else. It’s usually filthy.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 22/12/2024 13:58

Hoppinggreen · 22/12/2024 10:20

I would argue that not knowing what sex you are could be a MH issue and therefore a disability.

🙄

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/12/2024 13:58

Nobody’s taking it away or saying that you don’t deserve toilets.

Oioisavaloy27 · 22/12/2024 13:58

It doesn't affect you however you could ask for both toilets to be changed into unisex toilets

verysmellyjelly · 22/12/2024 13:59

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I don't care what labels you choose to apply to yourself or not apply. But what I'm saying is, the Equality Act is just one definition of disability. There are many other definitions and many of those definitions would consider anyone with specific diagnoses to have a "qualifying" disability. Again, obviously not quibbling with how anybody chooses to label themselves, but the chief reason for insisting aggressively over several posts that you are NOT disabled absolutely is because you perceive it negatively. You can deny that if you want but it's glaringly obvious from your comments!

AgnesX · 22/12/2024 13:59

All of these people going "what business is it of yours" well, maybe because they're not disabled? However else you might regard trans people any disability they have is a totally separate issue.

If there are other single occupancy cubicles they can use those and let the accessible cubicles be more available for those that need the wider doorways and bars and extra room.

Tsama · 22/12/2024 13:55

This reminds me of the time when I was in year 6 I would have been 11 at the time a girl in my class got rather close to me. She kissed me and felt about a little nothing over the top. I was stunned and didn't know what to make of it. I looked at her Facebook page 25 years later and she is married with 4 kids. I understand what you mean.

verysmellyjelly · 22/12/2024 13:59

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/12/2024 13:58

Nobody’s taking it away or saying that you don’t deserve toilets.

That is exactly what's happening. You should educate yourself about how we got these toilets and why we need them. It's very selfish of abled people who don't need them to use them and to cheerlead others doing it.

Sirzy · 22/12/2024 13:59

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/12/2024 13:58

Nobody’s taking it away or saying that you don’t deserve toilets.

But they are making it harder.

Im not sure why it’s so hard for people to realise why a disabled toilet should be easily accessible to those who are disabled. Someone just nipping in risks leaving a disabled person in a very vulnerable and embarrassing position but that’s fine if it saves you walking a few steps more!
