Secondary school does not allow D.Martens

Dd in Y7 - unfortunatelly we picked the wrong school, teachers don’t stay long, behaviour is appaling, bullying is not dealt with and I even found a video on YT of a parent beating up one of her child’s colleagues - a disabled girl (apparently club feet) at the school gates.
Dd says that disable girl is a bully but I don’t know the full story.

Anyway, the school uniform rules say black shoes. I let Dd use her black DM boots. The issue took an issue with it because DMs are not school shoes - but a lot of students wear kickers that looks like boots so I really don’t see a problem.
I’ve had notes sent home and a few meetings to discuss the matter. Everytime I tell then that they should be worried and using their time and energy to fix the real problems the school have, and the shoes Dd wears does not impact her learning.

Then in one of the meetings they asked Dd why she loves her DMs so much and why she is so attached to it and she reply along the lines that it is because it makes her feel safe as they are strong and sturdy and she feels that she can kick bullies if needed.

Now, Dd has never been involved in or accused of bullying and she is going from an confident / outgoing girl to fearful and insecure. I did not know this is how she felt about the DMs.

Now the school is using what she said against us, saying that she should not be encouraged to think about violence even if it is for self defence. Dd’s life now is hell as every school staff now comments on her DMs to her daily, all day long saying ‘those are not school shoes and you are breaking the rules’

I’m trying to convince her to buy a pair of kickers just so the harassment stops and she can actually focus on learning.

Yes I already applied for school transfer.

YANBU. The weather is getting colder and they are suitable for the weather. I’d fight it.

MiraculousLadybug · 28/11/2024 12:01

Sorry YABU. You've stated she wants them so she can "kick bullies". The school can ban anything they like. Bovver boots have been banned in schools since I was there in the early 90s, I'm not sure why they should make a comeback and you're not making a very good case for it TBH.

Brefugee · 28/11/2024 12:01

DD gave a glib silly answer.
She should have said "sturdy, hardwearing, comfortable"

Exactly. That would have been a good case for it.

cardibach · 28/11/2024 12:02

So it’s DM boots when the rule says shoes? Not that DMs aren’t allowed at all.
Really odd to say she likes them because she could kick someone wit( them too - that would raise all kinds of red flags with the school.

Octavia64 · 28/11/2024 12:02

Just buy her some school shoes fgs.

EdnaTheWitch · 28/11/2024 12:03

DM shoes instead for school, keeps her boots for other things 🤷🏻‍♀️

BarbaraHoward · 28/11/2024 12:03

I don't think most schools with a uniform policy would allow DMs? If the uniform policy states school shoes, they're not... shoes.

This isn't worth the argument IMO.

arcticpandas · 28/11/2024 12:03

I understand why the school has a no dm rule. In a fight they can be quite dangerous..

This. She’s in Y7. Don’t try to convince her to buy kickers. Buy them. Or if she really loves DMs, ask if DM shoes would be acceptable (you’ve said it’s boots she has) and buy those. Second hand if they are too pricey.

DMs make shoes. I wear them all the time. The OP needs to ask if DM shoes would be allowed. Every school I’ve worked in would allow them, but not the boots of the rule is shoes

Ohthatsabitshit · 28/11/2024 12:05

Just buy school shoes made by DM and tell her they will be good and sturdy for school.

They aren’t all steel toe capped bovver boots…

eRobin · 28/11/2024 12:05

It’s more likely that the disabled child has been bullied relentlessly for a long time and is finally fighting back

Yes but in Y7 she has only started learning the politics of secondary school jungle and finding out sometimes you can’t be 100% honest unfortunately

What do you mean, you're trying to c9nvince dd to wear Kickers instead? Because it sounds like you think you need her permission to tell her what she will be wearing to school.

That’s not ‘secondary school jungle’, it’s common sense that it’s daft to say you like your boots because you could hurt someone with them. And if it’s not, if she meant it, then there are issues you and the school need to deal with.

ByHardyRubyEagle · 28/11/2024 12:07

I don’t think the shoes are the real issue here I think it’s your attitude honestly, your daughter also thinks of the school as being full of bullies and you are reiterating this to her. Fair enough if it’s a rough school, but I’m not sure your views are helpful in this situation. I don’t think I can believe a public video or a parent ‘beating up’ a disabled child either.

Hoppinggreen · 28/11/2024 12:08

The school doesn't allow them so she can't wear them, its pretty simple and I would also suggest that no matter how she may wnat to kick someone she refrain.
Hopefully you will be able to change school soon as it doesn't sound like a great place for your DD but in the meantime she will have to follow uniform rules.

MabelMaybe · 28/11/2024 12:09

Our secondary will allow DM shoes but not boots. I was all set up for DS to have DM boots at secondary but he's managed fine with other shoes (now Yr 11).

adulthoodisajoke · 28/11/2024 12:10

I was never allowed boots in school, I dont think they are commonly allowed
but I would have thought DM shoes to be acceptable. especially those without the bright yellow stitching
there are plenty of shoes on the DM website that would be more than acceptable as a school shoe, eg no bright yellow stitching to bring attention to them
a lot of schools ban overly branded items. its one of the reasons there is a school uniform policy in most schools. DMs aren't your bog standard shoe.
I think she gave a silly answer when asked, but she is only in y7. this could be a learning moment of careful what you say and think about the impact your words have.
ive never had an issue with clarks shoes in terms of durability

when I was in school different things were banned all the time (skirt styles, trouser styles, unmarked jumpers/ties, hoodies, certain makeup looks)

just buy her some normal shoes

Trumptonagain · 28/11/2024 12:10

Sounds like you didn't pick the wrong school after all.

cardibach · 28/11/2024 12:10

@corporategreen you haven’t answered me asking whether DM shoes would be acceptable - this would seem to be a solution if they are.

TheWonderhorse · 28/11/2024 12:11

Our school policy isn't about which brands are okay and which are not, but whatever the shoes they're not allowed visible branding.

Boots are not allowed either.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/11/2024 12:12

So she's wearing them for exactly the reason why the boots have been banned in a large number of schools since the 1970s (when my brothers were sent home to change)?

Normal shoes. That way if she does get into a fight, at least she isn't going to break legs, ribs, facial bones or skulls - whoever started it, there were a court case (or inquest, FFS), it's on record that she wears boots against school rules so she can kick somebody's head in - or that's how it would be presented, at any rate.
