to tell son NOT to post memes of black people

Please help me . Huge row with 11 year old.

His friend posted a meme of a black person with "bombastic side eye".

He wants to repost it to some silly comment.

I said it is wrong and not the right thing to do even if the person "bombastic side eye" posted it himself on tin tok.

Please give me your thoughts.

Some of them do - if they are entertainers. Don’t purport to speak for all black people, most of whom
don’t want to be treated as absurdly fragile by patronising white people.

Social justice warriors.. Social justice warriors everywhere............

This is stupid. It's this sort of shit that belittles actual racism because it feeds the racist views about being "PC" and treating races differently.

It’s all ludicrous, with constantly shifting goalposts designed to maintain division. It’s mostly white people and their saviour complex responsible for it too - infantilising black people in the process. Buying rap music and paying to watch black people in concert apparently isn’t racist or cultural appropriation, but god forbid you sing along to the lyrics. God forbid you share a meme with the singer’s face even though that singer might expressly want you to. Etc etc.

Such embarrassing virtue-signalling. Infantilising black people. Ugh. They’re not your virtue signal props

Yes. That is my point. We live in an asian country and kids go to international school.

I grew up in Britain. I said although you do not think it is racist, it is in fact a. racist action, and this is not for entertainment. He said what if I posted a white person. I said you need to understand the history of black people, and you shouldn't post just because others do.

OP given that this is your thread and you believe this is racist, can you please explain how/why? I don't understand what giving the side eye in a sarcastic or exaggerated way has to do with black people specifically, or stereotypically. It's certainly not a stereotype I am aware of.

fuckingbastard · 17/08/2024 16:17

It's not racist. The problem is the kiddos.

Excited101 · 17/08/2024 16:19

I’d be concerned that if it’s primarily black people who feature in the memes, that it’s to do with the high contrast between the whites of the eyes and the colour of the skin that make it so ‘funny’. And that would be then the racist stance on it. But I am not black, and I am not an expert. But that to me, would be why it’s different if it’s a pic of a black person compared to white.

Zow · 17/08/2024 16:20

@Excited101 It is NOT primarily black people in memes and gifs! This is the OP making an issue out of nothing, and trying to cause discord where there is none. There's a word for people like the OP.

It’s racist. Black people don’t exist for the amusement of others.

If there were no memes featuring black people, and all memes of funny facial expressions were of white people, you would be saying it's racist that black people are being excluded from memes.

BlackPanther75 · 17/08/2024 16:21

MSLRT · 17/08/2024 15:47

And white people?

Only black people can laugh at black people

only white people can laugh at white people

only Asian people can laugh at Asian people

otherwise it is RACISM!!!

100% this. SOME people will find any old excuse to cause disharmony! 🙄

Oh OK, so only white people are allowed to laugh at the new Deadpool and Wolverine movie? Should all black and asian people sit in silence, or just leave the cinema altogether?

saraclara · 17/08/2024 16:26

For goodness sake, this was a meme created by a black person!

She gave it the photo, the name and the context, but it can't be shared because it's racist?
You've way over-reacted @mazxim . I'm sure you meant well, but this was not worth having a huge row over and damaging your relationship with your son.

InkyPinkyPonky24 · 17/08/2024 16:26

@BlackPanther75 I can't tell whether you are being sarcastic or not with your post.

I think it's fine for a white person to laugh at a black person and vice versa if it's in the context of comedy. For example, Will Smith has had some brilliant lines during his career that make me laugh. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Context is key

They were being sarcastic. Their other posts make that clear

HollyKnight · 17/08/2024 16:28

There is a HUGE difference between laughing at a black person being funny and laughing at a person for being black because you think that is funny.

@ButWhatAboutTheBees I don't tend to take notice of usernames when reading posts so wouldn't have linked it to previous.

I agree, context is key.

Oh and this is for those posters saying he should then get banned from his phone for daring to question you...

Absolutely NOT! Punishing him for having a different opinion immediately is a sure fire way to push him towards negative opinions in secret. Instead having an open and frank discussion about why your opinions differs and why each think they are right is far better. If he continues to insist something provably offensive then consider consequences. But go in open minded. You might change your opinion too.

Of course they were being sarcastic. No one in their right mind would think that.
