I remember reading that 2/3 of Americans believe the government is responsible for making sure everyone has health care and more than half of those think that should be an NHS with the rest wanting a mix of private and public.

Of course that doesn't mean they think taxes should pay for it, I guess. Perhaps they're looking for that magic money tree the Tories liked to talk about.

I don’t comment on the rights/wrongs of Israel/Gaza actions as such - but I saw that Israel have further encroached on Gaza land and destroyed 1500 buildings since the ceasefire - so whatever deal this is has Trump got Bibi to agree?

Hamas says it has agreed to disarm after Donald Trump announced that the Board of Peace had reached a “historic” agreement, a senior Hamas official told the BBC on Friday.
Under the proposed phased deal, Hamas would disarm, Israeli forces would withdraw as the disarmament progresses, and an international stabilisation force would work with a new Palestinian police force until a new Palestinian government takes over governance in Gaza.

When DB got Uncle Sam to pay for his doctorate, they provided a nice list of US universities. I remember MIT was one. They provided a budget related to whatever he was doing and what they needed at Oak Ridge.

There was a lot of grumbling when he chose Oxford, UK (which to be fair was a world leader in high performance computing). However any discussion disappeared when he pointed out that all together (with housing and medical bills) it was cheaper to study in the UK for three years.

That was over 10 years ago.

I would be totally unsurprised if it was possible to travel to Canada and be treated better and cheaper than relying on the small mercies of US insurance.

Or was the hospital in Canada simply cheaper than a US one? (If so, maybe because Canadian private hospitals are competing against a comprehensive state medical system, therefore private hospitals can only operate at a price point which customers feel is good value for money.)

I am trying to work out how broken ribs and a bruised lung gave him a hernia. Because that seems to have been what the operation was for. Is this usual? Aren't hernias usually abdominal or in the groin area, not upper chest?

You'd think if he was going private it could have been sorted out sooner than that, especially since it "requires urgent surgery to correct". In Paul's favour it is said they need treatment by surgeons who specialise in nothing else, which seem to be available in the Canadian hospital with "Hernia" as part of its name, so that explains him going abroad for his op.

DB could have an MRI within an hour of it being ordered. However then finding someone to actually do something about it is a different story.
