7 teen holiday ideas to keep the whole family happy

Travelling with teenagers can be tricky, but if you pick the right destination with plenty to do and accommodation that hits the spot, you’re in for a harmonious holiday. Here are the Mumsnetter-recommended escapes that are anything but boring.

Teenagers on a TUI BLUE holiday

Travelling with small tots can be challenging. But holidays with teens can feel trickier for a whole bunch of different reasons. Toddlers might have tantrums, but teens have opinions. Strong ones. They might grumble about being seen with you in public and recoil at anything labelled fun unless it’s on their own terms. Add in the lure of WiFi, their need for personal space, and ever-shifting moods, and it’s no wonder many parents feel like they’re treading on eggshells when booking a family escape with teens in the mix.

But when it works, it really works. A holiday with teens can be hugely rewarding and memorable for all the right reasons. Destination is key: find somewhere that balances freedom with family time and fun with a dash of adventure, and you’ll be rewarded with a break from the norm where everyone actually gets along (most of the time). Give teens a bit of agency, some time away from their siblings and activities that don’t make them cringe, and they’re more likely to enjoy the trip.

From city breaks to all-inclusive resorts with activities on tap, here are seven holiday ideas that Mumsnetters rate for making family travel with teens that bit easier.

And don’t forget that TUI’s Free Kids’ Places deal is valid for children up to the age of 16. Something to bear in mind when searching for an affordable family holiday.

1. Antalya, Turkey: a sunny beach resort with wow-factor hotels

What Mumsnet users say

[...] We stayed in Barut Lara [in Antalya] with our 4 teens last year. It was a mistake. It’s totally ruined them… they do not want to go ANYWHERE else! [...] [It] was amazing. The entertainment/beach bar/food/water park etc all first class." Recommended by Mumsnet user Chocbuttonsandredwine

The resorts in Turkey tend to have a lot going on - waterparks, different activities, lots of different restaurants." Recommended by Mumsnet user Cherryassam

When it comes to keeping teens entertained without breaking the bank, Antalya delivers. Set on Turkey’s stunning Turquoise Coast, it’s known for its reliably sunny weather, golden beaches and sprawling resorts that feel more like mini theme parks.

The hotels here are next-level. Think huge swimming pools, waterpark-worthy slides, gaming rooms and beach access that doesn’t involve trudging miles in flip-flops. Many resorts run teen clubs or activity programmes too for some same-age socialising.

It’s also one of the best destinations in Europe for a cheap family holiday, with many all-inclusive hotels offering reasonably priced packages throughout the year. Fancy venturing out? A boat trip along the coast, a day exploring ancient ruins, or shopping in local bazaars ticks the box for teens after something a bit different.

2. Riviera Maya, Mexico: an epic long-haul escape

What Mumsnet users say

[A] TUI holiday to Mexico is a great idea for teens. Spent ages researching holiday ideas as we had a teenager and much older son to consider; wanted to find something we'd all really enjoy - this was it! Visiting temples (Chichén Itzá) was a great success but there's so much to do in the Mexican Riviera and the beaches and wildlife are stunning! Those AI complexes are amazing too. And TUI looked after us well, the whole experience was unforgettable. Now finding it hard to find anything that matches up…" Recommended by Mumsnet user prettypeace

[...] [So] much to do for teens locally - we went swimming in cenotes and with turtles and rays, we went to Xel-Há (a water park set in a place of natural beauty and using the natural landscape as much as possible), swam with dolphins there, we also went on a pirate ship evening cruise from Cancun and to see a local Mayan settlement where we did kayaking and zip wiring etc, and then had a traditional meal etc. It was amazing." Recommended by Mumsnet user Britneyfan

For families looking to splash out on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, Mexico’s Riviera Maya packs a punch. With jungle adventures, white-sand beaches, ancient Mayan ruins and a sprinkle of luxury, it’s a long-haul destination that feels like a proper adventure.

Resorts in Playa del Carmen and Tulum come with stylish pools, Instagram-worthy views and watersports galore. And on the activities front, there’s plenty to get excited about. Think paddleboarding, swimming in cenotes (natural sinkholes filled with freshwater) and even ziplining through the trees.

History fans (or TikTokers on the hunt for incredible backdrops) can explore Chichén Itzá or Coba, while those after downtime can chill by the pool or hit the spa in one of the many topnotch all-inclusive resorts.

3. A Med cruise: changing scenery and snacks on tap

What Mumsnet users say

We did a Marella Discovery cruise with my DCs and nieces 12 and 15. The ship is really easy to navigate, the daily planner helps us plan the daily activities, and the entertainment was amazing [...]” Recommended by Mumsnet user DinkyDaffodil

We did a Marella cruise. [...] The boat looked smaller than I expected - but it was like a tardis inside - so much packed in, and so much to do for all ages […] Take your teen to a speciality restaurant for a meal where they can dress up, and make sure you pack an outfit for Captain's night.” Recommended by Mumsnet user ButterOllocks

If your teen gets bored easily, a cruise is a brilliant option. Each day brings a new port and something fresh to see - perfect for short attention spans and keeping the shrugs of indifference at bay.

Mediterranean cruises are particularly good for families as there’s often a mix of beach time, city exploration and sea days, with enough history, culture and gelato to please everyone. And while you explore together by day, evenings onboard offer a huge range of dining and entertainment options for the whole family to enjoy together (or separately).

And opting for an all-inclusive Marella cruise makes it easy to manage family finances as the package price covers flights, transfers, cabin accommodation, food, drink, entertainment and even tips so you know exactly what you’re paying for in advance. Perfect if you’ve got teens that like to snack their way through the day.

The Marella fleet features amenities like cinemas, pools, sports courts and climbing walls, as well as teen-only area, Hideout, which is kitted out with games consoles and comfy chairs (on peak season sailings there are events like gaming tournaments and silent discos on offer).

There’s plenty of freedom to let teens roam while you relax. And because everything’s contained, you know they’re safe. Plus, with unlimited pizza, soft-serve* and soft drinks, you’re unlikely to hear any complaints.

4. TUI BLUE resorts: all-inclusive breaks with teen-friendly clubs

What Mumsnet users say

I took my family, including my two teens (13 and 15) on a TUI BLUE holiday last summer, and it was a fantastic experience for all of us. We stayed at one of their hotels with the Family Fun highlight, and the dedicated teens area was a game-changer. My kids loved the beach games and the weekly evening party - it gave them a chance to hang out with other teens and feel a bit independent, while I got to relax by the pool knowing they were having fun. The on-site waterpark was a huge hit too; we all ended up racing down the slides together, which turned into some unexpected family bonding!" Recommended by Mumsnet user daniellouis

Not all all-inclusives are created equal. TUI BLUE resorts are specifically designed for families, with age-specific clubs, excellent food, and a big focus on wellbeing, fitness and fun.

What sets them apart is their attention to teen travellers. Many hotel kids’ clubs cater to children up to the age of around 12 but each TUI BLUE resort features a dedicated area for older kids (12-15) to socialise and chill out (or just enjoy a shaded place to scroll and chat) without younger siblings getting in the way. Activities range from pool games, various challenges and fun weekly parties in the summer months.

The resorts themselves are modern and stylish, and they’re located in popular spots including Spain, Turkey, Greece and Cyprus. Many offer direct beach access, water slides, splash parks and relaxing spas for parents. There’s a real understanding of family dynamics at each hotel and as a result, you’ll find facilities that cater to everyone.

[All-inclusive] is a godsend with picky but endlessly hungry teenagers. Mine love a buffet.

5. Berlin: a cool city break for curious teens

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin

What Mumsnet users say

It's a fantastic city for teens, especially ones interested in history. Lots of great museums and very honest reflections of the last 100 years.” Recommended by Mumsnet user Neighneigh

Our teenagers LOVED Berlin. We did: city guided bike ride (3 hours) - probably their highlight, a river trip (1 hour), 2 of the museums on museum island plus Pergamon Museum, The Panorama (half a day) they LOVED The Panorama [...]” Recommended by Mumsnet user TakeMeToKernow

If your teen is into history, street art, music or fashion, Berlin is the ideal urban escape. It’s a city that feels effortlessly edgy but also laidback.

Start with the obvious - the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the absolutely fascinating DDR Museum. Then throw incredible street art, pop-up food markets and a seriously good vintage shopping scene. For music fans, Berlin’s legendary electronic scene adds an extra layer of interest - even if it’s just sifting through vinyls in record shops or chatting to local musicians in cafes rather than going clubbing together.

It’s also a city that feels safe, has an excellent (and affordable) public transport network, and plenty of green space. Base yourselves in a family-friendly hotel or an apartment and enjoy the kind of city break that’s actually fun for everyone.

6. Austria: a lakes and mountains escape for adrenaline seekers

A cable car in Hinterglemm, Austria

What Mumsnet users say

We went to Austria with TUI last summer - the whole family loved it! DH wasn’t keen on the idea but by the end of the holiday he was saying he’d be happy to go back. Brilliant for teens as there’s enough to keep them active." Recommended by Mumsnet user Sorrelbird

We have stayed in St Johann for a week with kids aged 7, 10 and 13. Good base for walking and self catering with supermarkets. [...] Generally we walk all day so cover a lot of ground but vary the walks to keep kids interested, waterfalls, mountain lakes, cable cars up and circular walks on top. Many of the big mountains have fantastic play areas on the top or half way up.” Recommended by Mumsnet user janedani

For teens that struggle to sit still, Austria’s lakes and mountains resorts - like Zell am See, Saalbach and St Johann - offer a breath of fresh air (quite literally). These areas are ideal for active types and outdoor enthusiasts, and the scenery is incredible at every turn.

In summer, families can hike, bike, kayak or try canyoning and paragliding. Many resorts offer summer cards for free or discounted access to cable cars and outdoor pools. And adventurous teens will love the challenge and thrill of activities like high-ropes courses and paddleboarding on glacier-fed lakes.

There’s a sense of freedom here that teens thrive on – whether it’s exploring mountain trails or taking a dip in a freshwater lake of epic proportions. Plus, the slower pace (and patchy WiFi signal in the mountains) means you can enjoy some proper downtime as a family, and wholesome evening dinners in alpine chalets followed by a few early nights (because everyone’s pleasantly tired).

7. Marrakech: an all-year-round option for sun and souks

Jemma el Fnaa at dusk

What Mumsnet users say

Definitely visit La Jardin Majorelle - it's stunning! Even my two teenage boys said it was one of the best trips we did!” Recommended by Mumsnet user HappyKatieA

We've taken our teens the last two years; Marrakesh the first year, Agadir last year. We loved both, all inclusive both times.” Recommended by Mumsnet user HappyKatieA

For a cultural hit with a difference - and a flight time that won’t test your nerves, Marrakech is a top pick. With year-round sunshine, vibrant souks, and a totally different vibe to European cities, it feels like a proper escape.

Teens will love the buzz of the medina, the colourful chaos of the souks, and the sensory overload of sights, smells and sounds. There’s a chance to haggle for souvenirs, try Moroccan mint tea, and soak up some real culture without feeling like you’re dragging them through museums.

Stay in a riad (a traditional Moroccan house with an inner courtyard) for an authentic experience, or opt for a resort on the city’s outskirts - the leafy Palmeraie - with a pool and shuttle into town. Day trips to the Atlas Mountains and camel rides in the desert add a bit of adventure, and there’s plenty of poolside downtime to balance out the action.
