How a radical lesbian became a leading trans activists as a trans man - one of the usual suspects

I am one of those on mumsnet FWR who has often said we need someone to do one of the "family tree" charts to show which are the individuals who have been working on the trans agenda for 30 - 40 decades.

Well this brilliant articles lists the history and "victories" of one of them. Sad

And as the writer says "1974: Whittle sets up the Manchester Lesbian Collective. That same year, after attending a Women’s Liberation Conference in Edinburgh, which she attended as a member of that collective, she apparently came out as a “trans man”. Wouldn’t it be fascinating to know more about the Manchester Lesbian Collective and that Women’s Liberation Conference? What on earth happened to convince teenage lesbian activist Whittle that she was in fact a man?" "

She didn't take her turn at making the tea at the conference in Edinburgh and decided she liked not having to make the tea?

Very disappointed that so few mumsnetters who are usually so keen to dig into the links and private networks that have created the very effective pro trans campaign are not prepared to engage with this well researched article. but will spend hours spinning comments on a two line tweet.

Sad if it is because of not wanting to engage with the fact that some women have been actively part of that, and give the trans campaign the "women support us" credibility they need.

Whittle & James Morton (in Scotland) seem to keep their heads down more than their transwoman colleagues but are insanely influential (maybe because of that).

FloralBunting · 20/05/2020 13:58

I think the article is linked and discussed in another thread.

QuentinWinters · 20/05/2020 13:58

I thought that was really tedious and doesn't say anything interesting. It just says Stephen Whittle is an FTM who lives and wants to be regarded as a man. Nothing new there and as far as I'm concerned Whittle can live how Whittle wants, as it doesn't impact me at all.

I find it very sad that Whittle did not direct their talents into lesbian activism instead.

Instead, Whittle's campaigning activities have had a very detrimental impact on the rights of women and girls.

ChattyLion · 20/05/2020 14:58

Many campaigns have their ‘safe pair of hands we can deal with’ figures who know how the system works and who gets things gone and are very discreet, and then have their public-facing ‘list of demands’ type of campaigners. It allows the discreet safe pairs of hands in the back room discussions to look very reasonable and gently incremental in their proposals, because they can point to the ‘extreme’ demands being made publicly, and even say those are ‘going too far’, yet still steer things their own way.

I don't think there'S anything there that hasn't been discussed on previous Whittle/Beaumont/Press for Change etc threads.

Short early history of the Beamont society describes how in 1976, Stephen Whittle had joined & was helping 'Alice100' with the artwork for BB (newsletter sent to members) & babysitting.
'Alice100' writes:
"That is how he met his wife Sarah as we had double booked them one night. The quality of the BB improved with time and experience, including some quite nice Art Deco covers from Steve"
www.beaumontsociety.org.uk/documents/Beaumont_History.pdf

There is an early documentary which features a young Steven Whittle describing this period & may answer the OP's question. Apologies, I cant recall the title or find a link.

We all know that sadly there’s no way the TRA would have got as far as they have without the active support of some women. It’s not a surprise even though I really don’t understand their willingness to throw fellow women under the bus

Strangerthantruth · 20/05/2020 15:15

Whittle actually started a thread here way back when, not sure there is much more to add to the existing record of discussion really.

recent article by Jennifer Bilek

'From Transexual to Transgender to Transhuman Part I'
(extract)
As a member of the International Conference on Transgender Law and Employment Policy (ICTLEP) since 1992, Rothblatt authored one of the first drafts of the Transexual and Transgender Health Law Reports, after meeting Phyllis Frye, another transsexual lawyer, in Texas. This document would later be referred to as the International Bill of Gender Rights (IBGR). Phyllis Frye has been referred to as the “grandmother of the transgender movement.” Though Rothblatt’s transhumanist preoccupations may garner him more attention, we must consider him as much of an influence in normalizing transsexualism (now transgenderism), as Frye. Together they launched a small meeting of transsexuals into an international project to drive transsexualism globally. A history of their meeting and subsequent growth of the transgender project in the culture, can be found here.

The Conference of Transexual and Transgender Law and Employment Policy became an international project once Frye was contacted by a transsexual identifying female in the UK named Stephen Whittle, now a professor of equalities law at Manchester Metropolitan University and president-elect of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) which has since developed an American branch (USPATH). Whittle too has been extremely instrumental in driving trans activism, especially in the UK.

The Transexual and Transgender Health Law Reports initiated by Frye and Rothblatt and then Whittle, became a working draft for another global document and committee outlining transsexual/transgender rights in the UK, the Interdepartmental Working Group on Transexual People, advanced by yet another male, transsexual, lawyer, Christine Burns and set up by the Home Secretary of the UK in 1999. Membership at the Working group included representatives from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the US.

These four lawyers, all transsexual identifying, have been the main generators of a project to deconstruct sex within the law, on a global scale and to have it replaced with medical identities representing how they feel about their bodies. Martine Rothblatt has gone much further in this deconstruction process."

Whittle was also discussed at length on the Yogiyakarta Principles threads.

OP sorry you're "disappointed" by the lack of replies on your thread but Whittle is well known amongst the long-standing GC people here, and newcomers are usually lurking not posting.

I don't think I posted on the Yogiyakarta threads back then, but I was shocked and it did sink in, so count this as a bump.
