Not sure whether this has been posted already, so my apologies if so:

An assistant professor at Brown University has published an article on “Rapid-onset gender dysphoria in adolescents and young adults” in PLOS One.

Predictably, the journal and the university have come under sustained attack by transgender activists. It is deeply concerning to see the journal and the university show signs of caving to pressure . The dean of public health at Brown University issued a statement implying that scientific research must not “invalidate the perspectives of members of the transgender community.” The author of the study, Lisa Littman, does not have tenure and so the fact that she’s being undermined by her own university is very serious—and it will strike fear into anyone who is contemplating research in this field.

If you can take ten minutes to write three emails (from your institutional email account) to the editor of the journal, and the dean and the chair at Brown, that will help to counterbalance the politically motivated attacks. The details are here:

Dark days.

Facts must not override the feelings of the powerful. Sad days.

This is a huge problem in contentious areas of science research and means researchers are less likely to want to go to that field. It continues to be a substantial issue in the prevention of communicable diseases (aka, vaccine research).

bump

Another post about this.

Pleased to learn that Susie Green is equating concerned parents with white supremacists.

Have emailed, even though I am not an academic.
This is getting ridiculous now.
The totalitarian tendencies are on full display.

IAmSproutycus · 30/08/2018 18:17

Will do. Thanks for highlighting.

Oldstyle · 30/08/2018 18:43

Just bumping. This is so important. The same censorship is appearing in the UK - Prof Rosa Freedman had a GC paper turned down recently. The journal editor cited 'trolling problems' re the subject matter and subsequently published a protrans piece. Please sign the petition and, if you can, send an email too.

BUMP - please sign and email.

Thank you for the heads up on this. Just reading about it now.

Chaps - let's do something manly this Friday

NotTerfNorCis · 09/09/2018 08:50

Not sure if this is the right thread for it, but there seems to be another example of the hounding of an academic on Twitter this morning.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/09/2018 10:14

This was mentioned in the Times piece yesterday, wasn't it - there's a shared link on another thread.

Sunday Times today, 'Activists thwart work on gender law reforms
Academics exploring the legalities of changing sexual identityare being harassed and threatened with violence'
(extract)
Academics working in the field of gender identity have warned that hostility and threats from student activists are affecting their ability to research the possible effects of proposed reforms to the law.

Rosa Freedman, a law professor at Reading University, revealed last week that one student had called her “a transphobic Nazi who should get raped” because of her work on the legal implications of reforms that would make it easier for people to change their gender.

Selina Todd, a history professor at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, said yesterday that she feared a “witch-hunt” would target anyone who dared to challenge proposals to open female-only spaces — such as changing rooms and refuges — to men who identify as women.

Other leading lecturers have called on universities to defend their freedom after protests against academics who signed an open letter two weeks ago complaining they were being “harassed over research into transgender issues” (continues)
