(47 Posts)I have a few questions about Octonauts:
What is Captain Barnacles accent? Is it southern? Northern? It doesn't seem to be consistent.
Proffesor Inky-whatsit, is he meant to be an octopus that looks like a cat?
Why are the girls relegated to mere sidekicks & not even mentioned in the opening titles? Is because their girls or because they're both forrin?
Are the animals featured real animals (I mean the ones they rescue, not the Octonauts)?
Barnacles voice reminds me of a radio 4 presenter - he's supposed to be heroic and slightly posh I think.
Prof Inkling - slightly deformed octopus. The giant squid is his cousin so he's an octopus family member.
I suspect the girls arent mentioned in the opening titles as Twink and Dashi dont sound like particularly heroic names (unlike Kwazi and Peso ). Shellington otter doesnt get mentioned either in the opening titles - and he's a bloke. Its an ensemble piece.
Yes they are real. Take a look at the creature reports on CBeebies - they have a few clips of the actual creature in them.
As you might be able to tell, DS1 and DS2 are Octo-nutters so we watch alot of it in the dinky household...

My question - what on earth do those Vegemals do all day (other than bake)? And are they all called Turnip?
I'm also confused because Dashi is called Dashi on the TV show but in the books she is called Sauci.
I too am confused by the Veginmals and Chunip? Are all the vegimals called chunip? My DS is a massive Octonaut fan. Chunip (?) makes fish biscuits apparently.
Have you noticed how every other card onm the birthday bit has octonauts on?
Octonauts rule in my house too - DS is completely hooked. I'm rather keen on the theme tune actually, it's like the perfect action / spy music.
The theme tune is strangely compelling though, I find myself humming it throughout the day!
X post dumbellina - not just me then!
My DCs are mad on Octonauts too. DS now runs around the house humming and "der, der,der der" -ing around the house. Whilst each family member has been given a character name by DD.
DS wants to know where the people are.
I want to know why the land-based animals have been able to develop advanced technologies and mutant vegetables, but the marine animals haven't.
I want to know why Peso needs to wear a helmet when he's diving with the other Octonauts.. he's a penguin.. surely he can swim underwater!
Professor Inkling baffles me..
I think Professor Inkling is meant to be a Dumbo Octopus, like this.
piprabbit, thank you! Every time I watch that blasted program that annoys me
Can anyone help me. I need a pair of octogoggles! They don't appear to be available as merchandise, so please: in which episode(s) do they appear please? I can then (hopefully) manufacture a pair for an avid 3 year old fan.

You mean like the goggles with this magazine? www.ebay.com/itm/Octonauts-Magazine-Issue-10-Tweak-Playset-/380472552253
We've got a pair if you desperately need them? They're a bit small for my 3 year old.
We're addicted here too.
DH and I are both scuba divers and we've done a fair share of H&S at work and their working practices make us shudder. There's too many examples for me to bore you with share.
But to make the point I will point out that in one episode the Octopod is moved without doing a role count BEFORE. Tweak has pulled out a dangerously low-powered battery and when called away puts it back in, leaving the GUP looking safe to use, Peso doesn't tell anyone he is leaving the Octopod. There is no back-up radio when the power fails DH works at sea and made a cats-bum face.

We went to the Natural History museum in London recently and they had a marine section. DS was all 'giant squid!' 'look mummy, it's a vampire squid' 'puffer fish!' and I was all smug and not letting on to the clearly awed visitors around us that he'd learned it all from CBeebies
I don't get why a polar bear and a penguin are even approximately the same size.
Dinkystinky - Tunip, not Turnip
One of the vegemals is called Tunip, the others don't seem to have names. We bake barnacle biscuits, fish biscuits (Kwasi's favourite) and kelp cakes.
'Why are the girls relegated to mere sidekicks & not even mentioned in the opening titles? Is because their girls or because they're both forrin?'
It is because of the patriarchy.
Elfycat - excellent post.
