Do I need to move on from skinny jeans??

There have probably been threads like this already but....

I am hitting the shops tomorrow(ie. Zara) for my annual wardrobe top up. I NEVER shop. I am a country bumpkin and I work from home, I live in 3 pairs of different coloured skinny jeans from Zara, have one "going out" pair of Maison Scotch skinny jeans, with a few tops and jumpers, one pair of heeled ankle boots and one pair of knee high boots + trainers.

I am getting the feeling that I should not be buying more skinnies tomorrow. That the world has moved on. But I don't know if I can bring myself to buy bootcut or wide leg or mid calf trousers. I've only just packed away the bootlegs from the early 00s a few years ago!

What style do I buy that I can wear day in day out that doesn't look about 5 years behind everything? Or do I stick to skinnies cos I like them?

If you like skinnies and have no real desire to try another cut, stick with skinnies! They are still everywhere in shops and very popular. I only own two pairs of jeans but they are both skinnies, and they are my faveourite cut. Used to have nice 'boyfriend' cut jeans too, and I also like straight leg, but skinnies are my fave. You could try on a bunch of different styles and see what you like the look of and that fit well/comfortably? Maybe take a friend or relative along for extra opinion?

Noooo, I have to shop on my own!

As long as I won't look totally 2008, because what I buy tomorrow has to last for a few years!

Skinnies and more ankle boots I think it will have to be.

It took skinnies a couple of years to get established - loads of us swore we'd never wear them. I think it'll be the same for the new shapes.

For what it's worth, I do think skinnies will start to look dated quite soon but then I probably said that last year so what do I know! And of course you should stick with them if you like them.

They are great. And perfect for the British weather - try wearing boot cut in the rain and see how you get on.
There is no way I am giving them up!

Yes I am pretty confident skinnies will be my go-to jean fit for a long time to come, but then I really couldn't care less what fit is in fashion so. :)

I only just bought my first pair a week ago....

I wondered the same as I have just bought two more pairs of skinny jeans. They are still on sale everywhere so that must be a good sign. And I haven't seen anyone in real life wearing flares or bootcuts anyway, certainly no one I know.

I agree with you there. It's why I'm quite tempted by cropped flares Smile They may look a bit bizarre but I'm bored.

Ive got a feeling they have had their day. Im not particularly fashion minded and the only thing that made me surrender my bootcuts is the fact they are hard to find (am short - theyre a good shape for me). I was considering getting my first pair of skinnies recently but something is stopping me and i think its the fact they are on the way out and i dont want to start with them just as everone else stops! Arent the 70s coming back or something?

I live in black or navy skinnies when I'm not at work but popped in to Zara today and somehow left with a pair of straight leg dark blue jeans, a navy jumper, two shirts and a blazer. 70's is just not me so I am going for tailored classic! Confused That said I have no idea if I am pulling it off!

I've just bought a pair of straight leg jeans (usually live in skinnies)

That said, you can't beat a pair of skinnies with boots - ankle or longer.
Nothing else looks as good with boots.

I'll be sticking with skinnys and possibly straight(er) leg styles if skinnys really become incredibly dated..

I can't see it happening though. Everyone I know in my 20s age group has predeclared their hated of flares/ bootcut. Too many horrible memories of walking to school in the rain and having soaking wet cold legs all day! Plus, I just don't think they're very flattering on most shapes and boots are incredibly popular.

They might try to trick you with having "boot" in the name but they're no fooling me! You'll have to drag me kicking and screaming back into flares especially the bloody cropped ones

I disagree that skinnies look good. I don't think they're flattering on most of us - myself included - but we've got used to the carrot leg look so no-one notices any more.

But in some ways these are ideal times: still plenty of skinnies around but people who are bored can try something else. Everyone wins.

This pretentious article in the Guardian from 3 years ago ponders the longevity of the fashion for skinny jeans. They are still going strong!

I really think it depends what you wear them with and if they suit your shape. I have no doubt that skinny jeans aren't the ideal shape for my size/shape but they are terribly practical and I can wear them with heels, flats, Trainers and boots so I live in them. They don't get muddy when I walk the dog, they dry quickly if it rains and they wash and dry really well.
I love straight leg jeans and high waisted wide leg trousers and that is what I will be investing in once I've lost some weight but at the moment stretchy skinnies are my go to.
I do however think black skinny jeans/cords look really good with heels on a night out.
If skinnies are what you feel comfortable in I would buy some more. I think they're going to be around a good few years yet. The relaxed skinny some brands are making is a nice compromise, not so skintight.

Nope the world hasn't moved on from skinny jeans. There's no other type of jeans I'd wear. I can't stand bootcut or flares. Get what you like and don't worry about it. J think they will still be round awhile.

I have a pair of really nice bootcuts that have not been worn for at least 3 years. Every time I put them on I feel frumpy, even though they fit perfectly.
I'm usually a ruthless declutterer too!
I think skinny jeans will still be around for ages.

BTW I put the bootcuts on but then swap them for skinnies. I wouldn't be seen in them. I need to get rid.

There are often articles saying that skinnies are over but the majority of people I see don't seem to be agreeing! All the women I see are still wearing them.

If you want something that will last you a while I'd ignore what is in fashion right now and buy what you like and suits you well whether that is skinny jeans or not. Focus on quality and fit, fashion is fickle.

Boyfriend? I was pleasantly surprised by how flattering and versatile they were. And I know they've been around for ages now too but they might look a bit more fashionable on you if you're only used to seeing yourself in skinnies.

I like boyfriend jeans when it is warmer but I never know what shoes to wear with them in the winter.

I love skinnies and won't give them up. I might consider bootcut with a super-high heel for night, but never for day. I feel like bootcut is just wront.

Skinnies are indeed great for winter and boots.

I still quite like straight cut trousers, but not in jeans.
