This Q&A is now closed for questions. Watch Joel Crawford and Dr Roula Pappa answer your questions on The Croods 2: A New Age and prehistoric life in the video below!

To celebrate the cinema release of The Crood’s 2: A New Age on 16 July, we are giving you the chance to have your questions about the prehistoric world that the Croods and the Bettermans live in answered by the film’s director Joel Crawford and Dr. Roula Pappa, Curator of Fossil Mammals at the Natural History Museum, in a panel hosted by children’s TV presenter, Maddie Moate.

Find out more about our panel below.

Joel Crawford
Joel Crawford is the director of The Croods 2: A New Age. He also directed the Trolls Holiday Special, which aired on NBC. Crawford joined DreamWorks Animation in 2006 and quickly became an integral story artist on Trolls, Shrek Ever After, Rise of the Guardians, and Kung Fu Panda 1, 2 & 3. He also served as a story artist on The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water and Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. Crawford is an alumnus of The California Institute of the Arts.

Dr Roula Pappa
Roula has over 15 years’ experience in the curation of fossil mammal collections. Since September 2015 she has been working as a curator in the Natural History Museum (NHM) and is responsible for Plio-Pleistocene fossil mammals (almost 200,000 items). Roula’s own research is on prehistoric bears and she is analysing teeth material to understand what these bears used to eat during Ice Age and how they respond to environmental changes.

Maddie Moate
Maddie Moate is a BAFTA-winning presenter and YouTuber, passionate about curiosity. She is the host of the TV series “Maddie's Do You Know?” and also the lockdown learning show Let's Go Live.

Here’s a synopsis of The Croods 2: A New Age: ‘This epic comedy-adventure from DreamWorks Animation, directed by Joel Crawford, sees the Croods face their biggest challenge of all: another family. When the Croods – the first prehistoric family- discover an idyllic walled-in paradise and a safer place to call home, they think their problems are solved...except for one thing. Another family already lives there: the Bettermans.

When the Bettermans take the Croods in as the world’s first houseguests, it isn’t long before tensions escalate between the cave family and the modern family. Just when all seems lost, a new threat will propel both families on an epic adventure outside the safety of the wall, one that will force them to embrace their differences, draw strength from each other and forge a future together.

Featuring the voice talent of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman, Clark Duke, Leslie Mann, Peter Dinklage and Kelly Marie Tran, The Croods 2: A New Age is set to hit cinemas on 16 July.’

So, is your DC a budding paleontologist with a burning question about prehistoric life? Perhaps you and your children would like to find out more about how prehistoric animals and crazy creatures like Chunky the Death Cat or Punch Monkeys were imagined for the big screen, or how they came up with the ideas for the epic comedy adventure in The Croods 2: A New Age?

Whatever your questions, share them on this thread by midday 29 June. A selection of your questions will be put to Joel and Roula by Maddie via a panel interview, which will be posted on this thread on 12 July.

Everyone who shares a question on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Mumsnet user will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My children love the first Croods so they are very excited! My son would like to know if you are still discovering new prehistoric creatures from what you dig up?

Did dinosaurs really have feathers and we just have not found enough evidence due to the decay or fossilisation process ?

If the age killed all of the dinosaurs - what happened to the woolly mammoths ? and why did they die out ? We saw one which was found frozen in ice for 100s of years and it looked really awesome.

Do all animals have a common ancestor? Such as did spiders and birds and humans all come from the same fish that learnt to walk?

My 4 year old daughter is very excited for Croods 2 but after seeing the trailor a few weeks ago her main question is how did Eep get her peanut toe, which she has asked me several times! We are hoping to see the answer in the film but if not can Joel fill us in?!

I once heard tell of a talk about how imaging techniques now knew that dinosaurs were very highly coloured. Has there been any more work on that front? Changes everything.

Question for Dr Roula Pappa - would love to know what ignited your passion for what you are doing now? What it a childhood dream or something else that sparked your curiosity into fossils, prehistoric creatures etc. And what do you love most about what you do?

We're really looking forward to this film :)

For Joel Crawford: when making a film like this, do you feel you should base it on some historic evidence or as it's not real, do you enjoy being as imaginative as possible?
Dr Roula Pappa: when you watch films like this, do you enjoy them for what they are or do you get annoyed about the in accuracies?

I'm interested to know how you can work out what colours dinosaurs might have been and what sounds they might have made? I understand that bones can give an indication of shape and size but colour and sound, how? Fascinates me.
