This Q&A is now closed for questions. Watch Joel Crawford and Dr Roula Pappa answer your questions on The Croods 2: A New Age and prehistoric life in the video below!

To celebrate the cinema release of The Crood’s 2: A New Age on 16 July, we are giving you the chance to have your questions about the prehistoric world that the Croods and the Bettermans live in answered by the film’s director Joel Crawford and Dr. Roula Pappa, Curator of Fossil Mammals at the Natural History Museum, in a panel hosted by children’s TV presenter, Maddie Moate.

Find out more about our panel below.

Joel Crawford
Joel Crawford is the director of The Croods 2: A New Age. He also directed the Trolls Holiday Special, which aired on NBC. Crawford joined DreamWorks Animation in 2006 and quickly became an integral story artist on Trolls, Shrek Ever After, Rise of the Guardians, and Kung Fu Panda 1, 2 & 3. He also served as a story artist on The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water and Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. Crawford is an alumnus of The California Institute of the Arts.

Dr Roula Pappa
Roula has over 15 years’ experience in the curation of fossil mammal collections. Since September 2015 she has been working as a curator in the Natural History Museum (NHM) and is responsible for Plio-Pleistocene fossil mammals (almost 200,000 items). Roula’s own research is on prehistoric bears and she is analysing teeth material to understand what these bears used to eat during Ice Age and how they respond to environmental changes.

Maddie Moate
Maddie Moate is a BAFTA-winning presenter and YouTuber, passionate about curiosity. She is the host of the TV series “Maddie's Do You Know?” and also the lockdown learning show Let's Go Live.

Here’s a synopsis of The Croods 2: A New Age: ‘This epic comedy-adventure from DreamWorks Animation, directed by Joel Crawford, sees the Croods face their biggest challenge of all: another family. When the Croods – the first prehistoric family- discover an idyllic walled-in paradise and a safer place to call home, they think their problems are solved...except for one thing. Another family already lives there: the Bettermans.

When the Bettermans take the Croods in as the world’s first houseguests, it isn’t long before tensions escalate between the cave family and the modern family. Just when all seems lost, a new threat will propel both families on an epic adventure outside the safety of the wall, one that will force them to embrace their differences, draw strength from each other and forge a future together.

Featuring the voice talent of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman, Clark Duke, Leslie Mann, Peter Dinklage and Kelly Marie Tran, The Croods 2: A New Age is set to hit cinemas on 16 July.’

So, is your DC a budding paleontologist with a burning question about prehistoric life? Perhaps you and your children would like to find out more about how prehistoric animals and crazy creatures like Chunky the Death Cat or Punch Monkeys were imagined for the big screen, or how they came up with the ideas for the epic comedy adventure in The Croods 2: A New Age?

Whatever your questions, share them on this thread by midday 29 June. A selection of your questions will be put to Joel and Roula by Maddie via a panel interview, which will be posted on this thread on 12 July.

Everyone who shares a question on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Mumsnet user will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

How do we know dinosaurs really existed? Are bones really enough proof?

ruqiya1965 · 28/06/2021 21:38

Did dragons exist?

saffysabir · 28/06/2021 21:54

DD wants to know how it's possible to differentiate between the dinosaurs.

salemaxo · 28/06/2021 21:57

alshareif · 28/06/2021 22:00

Leanfun · 28/06/2021 22:24

Bryb · 29/06/2021 11:19

How did you bring the prehistoric animals to life for the film??

jacqui5366 · 29/06/2021 11:27

My budding paleontologist has a burning question about prehistoric life.......... as 4/5 ths of the Earth is water, and most of if undiscovered, and not affected by the ice age or the meteor - do you think or have we got evidence of underwater dinosaurs (Megladon for example) - as sharks have not evolved much since the age dinosaurs - thank you.

Montydoo · 29/06/2021 11:35

We love Chunky the Death Cat the best, and my DS would LOVE to know, if the tigers we have today have evolved from the Sabre Toothed tiger, and why they no longer need the sabre tooth ? Finally are there any fossils of sabre tooth tigers ?

DinkyDaffodil · 29/06/2021 11:49

We love everything dinosaur related, and have a collection of ammonites and would love to know what creature loved in them ? Thank you

HobNobAddict · 29/06/2021 11:53

We have visited the Natural History Museum several times in recent years, and would love to know can elephants be traced back to Woolley mammoths ? If not, they did seem very equipped for the Ice Age, so why did they die out (would it be lack of food ?)

Trinidading3 · 29/06/2021 19:34

My 8 year old son would like to know if Dinosaurs were musical and could they sing/hum?Grin

My DD is interested in how you choose the actors to be the voices of the characters. How different would the characters have been with different actors....eg Emily Blunt as Ugga?

lolly2011 · 25/10/2021 23:05

Whats the closest mammal to a dinosaur? How do you know what colour the dinosaurs were?

anxiouswaiting · 28/10/2021 14:37

How do we know what colours dinosaurs were, or is it guesses?
