Home Alone - xmas themed, family travel leaving a child behind, comedy and drama in one. Children wish they can be left Home Alone but in reality would it be nice?

DS doesn't like watching films in the car - given half a chance he'll play on his tablet though. We mostly pass the time by listening to audio books in the car - Terry Pratchett quite a lot of the time.

If I had to find a film to make him absorbed, the best bet would be a Scooby Doo.

mine would fight over the choice of film, so DS would probably play on his DS, and DD would watch re-runs of Buffy, Big Bang Theory or her fav film at the moment is St trinians

We don't watch films in the car, despite doing some quite long journeys, and play games and chat instead.

However, we are doing a very long flight this Christmas and will be taking frozen, tangled and probably a Harry Potter or two to keep the DDs entertained.

Arthur Christmas is our favourite Christmas film so that would be the best bet for us. Although my DCs don't watch films in the car either!

We have now, gradually, through various means and birthdays, progressed to the point where everyone has a tablet of their own. This will probably, therefore, be the first year when they might watch films on long(ish) journeys - my DM heartily disapproves and thinks they should be looking out of the window, but I remember quite how boring that was, and both DC strangely seem to be able to watch a screen where reading a book makes them feel sick.

So - to the question - if it was one film for both then probably Despicable Me (2) - otherwise Frozen or similar for DD, and whatever he had on his iPad which was newest for DS - if he was online (not in the car, as neither of them have mobile connectivity for their tablets, just wifi) then it would be back to back episodes of Only Connect [strange boy] . If they were looking for something Christmassy then probably Polar Express.

Such a shame to be watching films. Car journeys are such a great opportunity for singing and story telling.

We've never had screens in the car. The children look out of the window, sing along to the car CD or radio, and I make them each a spotter list.
We all look out for the oddest thing we can see from the window too.
On the train, DS has a railway route atlas and uses it to follow the train's progress, pointing out small stations as we whizz through them, and landmarks as we pass them.
DD tends to knit or read to pass the time.
They have never been allowed to climb over the seats on any mode of transport.

Snowman, then Father Christmas and finally Snowman and the snow dog - beautiful music and lets you imagination work as no words.
DS is five and hasn't yet experienced a white Christmas here (will we ever get one again?), but we have lived in NY and loved the snow there - brings back childhood memories for me too.

My lot have screens for long car journeys and will swap around between playing minecraft and watching Tom & Jerry (....still hysterical after about a gazillion viewings and the classic xmas ones are lovely). When not on screens they tend to read or we do big games of word association and eye spy or pick and spot a particular type or colour of car....one of 3 is dyslexic so eye spy doesn't always go as planned!

Also they are super keen on prodding each other, rowing with each other and nagging me for food or minute detail of how much longer til our destination and ensuring that their need to wee is never ever synchronised.

Mainly I fantasize about a plexi glass screen (like in a taxi) between the front and back of the car with an intercom system I control to give me a peaceful cocoon up front with R4 on in peace....

Santa Clause the movie. Was the first Christmas film we watched together and first we watch every year. Might be quite old now but still brilliant.

The Polar Express (on repeat, we've a 4 hour train journey one way for the kids to see their father for a week, then a 4 hour train journey home again for me, then another four hour train journey for me to collect them and a four hour train journey for us all home). They sit glued to it, doesn't matter that they've seen it a hundred times before they never get bored
