Toddler and baby in the same room - getting to sleep?

How have you gone about it?

DD1 is 2 and takes about twenty minutes to drop off. Sometimes with us going in a couple of times to reassure but she is always out within 40 mins.

DD2 is 3.5 months and although we're not doing it yet, at some point she's going to have to be put down to sleep in the same room as DD1. My initial thought was to wait until DD1 goes to sleep then put DD2 down but I worry that getting her to sleep (including likely crying) will wake DD1.

How do you go about getting the younger child into a routine when it's a shared room and will impact their sibling? I'm sure there's an easy solution to this (people must do this all the time!!) that I'm just not considering. By 9 months DD1 was going to bed at 7.30 regularly and I'd like this for DD2 but not sure if them both going down at that time by then is realistic? Confused

Marking place. I'm too scared to do the transition and DD2 is still with me at 10mo! I don't want to ruin DD1's sleep time.

Ours have really taken to sharing - eventually! DD1 was 3yo and DD2 was 6mo when they started sharing a room. Initially we would put the baby down first at 6.45 and then read stories to the toddler in our bed till the baby was asleep. It started to take longer and longer for the baby to fall asleep and the toddler was getting tired, so we tried putting the toddler to sleep in our bed first and then transferring her when we went to bed. But this was really annoying because we had to tiptoe around her if we wanted anything from our room.

Now we read them both stories in our bed, then stick them both in their beds at the same time, sing a lullaby and leave them to it. They "chat" a bit to each other, the baby likes to stand up and check the toddler is still there, but they are both usually asleep in 15 mins.

Sometimes it goes tits up and we have to take one of them out - when one is ill or something - but then they go to sleep in our bed and we move them back. They love it, they both sleep really well and the toddler climbs into the baby's cot in the morning to keep her company Grin

Thanks TMNT (and sympathising others Grin). I admit I hadn't considered putting DD2 down first, mainly because she's now going to bed at about ten which seems miles away from a 7pm bedtime right now!! I had thought about baby going to sleep in our room then transferring but not sure if that solves the issue really.

We did start getting the baby used to a 7pm bedtime from about 4 weeks old and we only moved her when she was reliably self-settling and sleeping through. I put quite a lot of work into getting her into a routine, lots of sitting with her whilst she went to sleep!!
