Only a fool would sign that
There is no detail as to the specifics of the materials it is objecting to

It's the anti-transgender trend petition. I guess by 'Anti LGBTQ' material they mean 'pro trans the gay away' material and 'pro tell girls that teenage boys can watch them shower' material.

I agree there is no detail at all in the petition as to what exactly is being objected to, why haven't they named the publications they are referring to, or link to them? The reader just sort of has to take their word for it that is actually the content (which it isn't, transgender trend does not advocate 'conversion therapy' ffs).

Only someone with no critical thinking skills whatsoever would sign that petition.

Oh let me think. 🤔 Should I, as a GC feminist, sign my name to that petition, that is the TRA version of ‘pray trans the gay away’? Nah mate, you’re ok.

Gosh. What a lot of interesting assumptions. The petition mentions no material by name and is about anti LGBT+ conversion therapy. See, eg, recent piece in the Guardian. Conversion therapy is harmful for all in our community. It wrecks lives. So isn’t it fascinating that some gcs immediately think of tgt? And isn’t it even more interesting that those same gcs would be willing to throw the L, the G and the B under the bus, just to get at the T? And these gcs call themselves feminists?

How can you expect anyone to sign it when the material isn't named
I would want the read the material before I put my name to anything

The material provided by Mermaids is definitely anti LGB, as is trans ideology generally, which prioritizes gender over sex. TRAs frequently attack lesbians for their same sex attraction.

Mermaids has definitely issued homophobic statements in the past.

Report
JamAtkins · 12/08/2018 12:26

Anyone with eyes can see it's a rehash of the anti transgender trend petition. It's not an 'interesting assumption' at all. It's being promoted all over twitter by homophobic misogynists. Nobody wants to 'get at the T' FFS. We just don't want children, especially the LGB youth that are collateral damage in the AGP cult, to be told that their bodies are wrong because they don't conform to sex based stereotypes. We also don't want girls private spaces in schools, and girls sports in schools, to be abolished because it's misogynous as fuck. Show me a petition that opposes Mermaids going into school and telling GNC and LGB kids that their bodies are wrong and they must be sterilised forthwith and I'll sign it.

Yes, but it doesn't exist in a vacuum.

Many people here are well aware that there is a push to get "watch and wait", or anything other than affirmation of trans teens labelled as "conversion therapy".

You're in the right place if you'd like to talk to a bunch of people who are deeply concerned about conversion therapy. But, you'll find that we're concerned that the trans narrative is effectively conversion therapy on gay teens. Loads of gay adults report they though they were the opposite sex while coming to terms with their sexuality in a homophobic / patriarchal society.

Given that the evidence shows that the vast majority of trans teens desist, left to their own devices, and that many of them grow up to be gay adults - why on earth would we want to sign something that is probably to do with cutting off options for those teens.

Trans activists say anything other that affirmation of a child's belief they're the opposite sex is akin to conversion therapy. But, I say that approach is conversion therapy in itself. So why would I want to sign your petition?

For a powerful story from a desister and why teens need to have access to narratives other than the transcult, see this:

What this petition amounts to, is yet another call to silence anything other than your message.

Don't you understand how fascist that is? That your movement doesn't seem to be able to tolerate a diverse range of ideas? That debate is suppressed. Does this not concern you, Delendaest?

If only one orthodoxy is allowed to be heard, how would you know if it was wrong? If different ideas can't be tested and discussed, how can people / society grow and learn?

I am becoming troubled by the apparent agenda of some of the posters on here. I post a petition against conversion therapy as it applies to our whole community. I back that up with ref to a Guardian article, also about our whole community. And, while painted tells me I am in the right place, the tone of that and other posts suggests that, no, in fact mumsnetters are in favour of conversion therapy. How can that be?

There is specific mention of a booklet here, also that following 'advice' the 'group' who produced it isn't being named in this petition.

I imagine that the review quoted would be searchable though even without the school booklet / group being named.

I'd be interested in knowing which organisations are distributing materials to schools recommending conversion therapy for gay and lesbian children.

Delendaest, sure, I'm happy to explain further.

But first, please tell me how you define conversion therapy, so we can be sure we're talking about the same thing?

She focuses on legal frameworks , safeguarding and statuatory policies etc

Are you unaware that many children who think they are the wrong sex will grow up to be gay? Do you understand that if they are told by adults that they are really in the wrong body, that this is a kind of gay conversion therapy?

The petition says they encourage school staff to break equality laws as stated in the EA2010.

Some materials do this, such as this one: Transgender Guidance for Wrexham Schools, which argues that boys should be able to use the girls' changing rooms if they think they are girls.

Is this the sort of material the petition is aiming to prevent from being distributed?

This sounds like a really serious issue and I was totally unaware it was happening. I am seeing my children's headmaster tomorrow over something unrelated. If you could kindly direct me to the specific material in question, I will be able to refer to it and of course analyse it first. Obviously I don't want to appear like a dickhead and start ranting on something vague.

The reason they are being deliberately vague, is once people read TGT schools pack, they see that it is totally reasonable and considered. And also has safeguarding and protecting children in mind.

It is all hyperbole and to be honest, utterly pathetic. And also desperate.

You don't provide a link to the Guardian article, or even a title, Delendaest. And the petition likewise offers nothing in the way of detail. Very odd. More than odd. Forgive me if I doubt your good faith.

There was a Guardian article about schools (May 2018):
'Schools pulled into row over helping transgender children
As more teens come out as trans, experts clash over how schools should help'

It outlined different positions:
Profound disagreement has arisen about what schools should do. Should they, in the words of a widely used toolkit from the Allsorts Youth Project in Brighton, “make visible and celebrate trans people”? Or take the “watchful waiting” approach advocated by the Transgender Trend pack, which warns schools to be “aware of the risk of ‘social contagion’ from celebrity trans internet vloggers who glamorise medical transition”?

Stephanie Davies-Arai, a parenting adviser, launched the Transgender Trend resource pack in February half-term, thinking it would barely get noticed. Instead, she says: “It just blew up”. The LGBT lobby group Stonewall accused Transgender Trend, the organisation Davies-Arai set up two-and-a-half years ago, of spreading “damaging myths, panic and confusion”, and advised local authorities not to use the pack. On Twitter, people piled in, with one describing the pack (which had been checked by lawyers) as a “modern edition of Mein Kampf” (continues)

Hmm, yes interesting, posters are thinking of transgender trend - not sure why would that be, let me think... Hmm

Oh, maybe it's because there is only one campaign running at the moment, inviting parents to bring resources into schools about trans, and that's Transgender Trend.

And, at the same time, there's a vague petition about "anti LGBTQ" schools materials.

Now, could the two things be related, just maybe?

You must think we're fucking idiots.

Transgender Trend's schools materials aren't anti-LGBT, incidentally, not in the slightest. But we're all well aware that's the kind of thing transactivists say to stop people actually reading it and using their own brains.
