FLOODS - are you affected?

OK, so if the water was coming in you wouldn't be on MN...

Just had a call from my mum as water is coming in through the house - there is severe flooding in Lincolnshire. Thought I'd post in case anyone else had family in the area:

Near Chester. The bloody rain hasn't let up since about 9pm last night. The water in my garage is due to utterly shite foundations, not a river bursting it's banks. Although we do live really near the canal...do canals flood?

Oh dear. I've never heard of the canal flooding here..I just assumed they opened the gates and let a bit out. But that just means that someone else lower down would get it all.

Think it's different in Lincolnshire as most of it should be under water anyway. Nowhere for the water to go!

Must re-read the Nine Tailors to check on flood gates. Seem to remember they are a Bad Thing (for some people).

If in doubt, head for the church. Mum has already booked a place in the manse. Unfortunately there may not be room for Dad's record collection.

. Where we used to live in North Yorks the town was very prone to flooding. It was very bizarre as now and again the hospital where I worked would go down to skeleton staff as everyone left to go and move all their furniture upstairs and put out their sandbags.

Strange thing is that they have NEVER had flood problems, despite living over a river. Sandbags not helping as water coming through scullery floor

Can see Mum at the manse and Dad on the roof with his boxes of LPs...

churches often on higher ground. Acc to DL Sayers, you can fit several villages and their livestock into a good sized church.

have you ever noticed the number of Yew trees growing in Church Grounds?

Well, yew trees are very poisinous to livestock. Like instant sudden death poisinous if they eat just a weeny bit.

BUT

Yew trees make the best wood for Bows (super strong but a bit bendy).

AND in ye olden times Church grounds used to be pretty much the only place with walls/fences (being holy ground etc).

So they planted Yew trees around Churches as they needed the wood for bows, but to keep the trees away from the livestock.

Re churches not flooding - has anyone read 'Moonfleet' - there is a fantastic scene where the church crypt floods (they are by the sea so may not disprove Effie's point) and they are sitting in the service and can hear all the coffins bumping into each other as they float around underneath them.

ah I was basing my theory on the Nine Tailors, set in the Fens. Church on a hill, so whole village evacuated there (along with belongings and animals)
