Hundreds of slugs on our lawn!

rebos472 · 13/08/2021 23:34

My Dh just called me to look at our lawn at 11pm. There are hundreds of slugs all over it and they are all over three inches long. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Apart from feeling it’s totally yuk I’m worried about our dog.

Do we need to do something?

ugh, they are vile

really hundreds?

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 13/08/2021 23:36

I stepped on one this evening

SomethingChief · 13/08/2021 23:38

Can you take a pic and show us?

SomethingChief · 13/08/2021 23:38

I've noticed a lot around the last few days. Not sure why though.

marmitecake · 13/08/2021 23:38

They are everywhere and they come out mostly at night. Been in to our garage and even caught one of the buggers munching its way through our poor guinea pigs' specially formulated, nutritionally balanced nuggets Sad

thenightsky · 13/08/2021 23:38

I can believe it. I once nipped out across the lawn in bare feet to bring the washing in. When I turned around to come back in, I saw 100s of slugs. How I'd managed to not tread on any running out I'll never know. Shock

gardeninggirl68 · 13/08/2021 23:40

snails too....been walking the dog late and its crunch crunch ...have to use my phone torch now to navigate

for a gardener i'm squeamish about the things!

rebos472 · 13/08/2021 23:44

Sorry, gone to bed so no picture. Was wondering about going down and salting the lot but then read it takes a lot of salt.

Ugh slugs are the bane of my life they ate all our baby Dahlias and Marigolds, destroyed our kale and young vegetables, even the tomatoes which are inside!!!

It's been a wet dreary summer so far, a paradise for slugs.

I slug pelleted the hell out of them, which bloody dissolve in this wet weather 🙄 then turn into an attractant!!
It's all so upsetting.

You can get special soil that kills them too. Diatomaceous earth. I'll use that next.

Yeah salt will wreck your lawn, possibly permanently.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 13/08/2021 23:45

Set it on fire and move to another planet

Pebbledashery · 13/08/2021 23:46

I'm too scared to look in my garden at night. I've noticed lots of snails during the day.. We have an issue with slugs getting in the hoi.. Every morning I'd wake up to silvery trails all over the carpet. Disgusting. Think there was a hole in the garden wall that made it easy for them to squeeze into.. Bleurgh. Got said hole filled up and put slug pellets down.. No longer an issue. They are absolutely hideous though.

gardeninggirl68 · 13/08/2021 23:51

beer in a glass....will fill up quickly as they fall in and can't gt out.....you'll likely need a bucket or 3.....i'm not going out to look at our lawn.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 13/08/2021 23:52

New puppy and it eats them Shock

DH and I are out in the dark collecting them....Great fun. Not.

Nitgel · 13/08/2021 23:52

We have lots too and they love the pet rabbits food. Where do they all go during the day!

PickAChew · 13/08/2021 23:53

Maybe shake salt all over them. No need for anything more drastic.

Suzysunflower · 13/08/2021 23:58

After having all my dahlias and other plants eaten up I now use nematodes and now there are only a few - I believe after 2 applications there will be even less.

idontlikealdi · 13/08/2021 23:59

We have loads, nit hundreds but loads, they started a couple of nights ago.

Please make sure you get the lungworm stuff if you have dogs.

Maryann1975 · 14/08/2021 00:02

Don’t put salt down. I did this a couple of years ago and I ended up with lots of dad patches of grass, which looked terrible. I collected them all up and salted them in a plant pot saucer, then put them all in the bin. It was disgusting, but I didn’t know what else to do with them.

Mol1628 · 14/08/2021 00:03

We have loads too. If I don’t pick up the dogs poop from the lawn straight away then they go and eat it!! It’s disgusting.
We’ve always had a problem with them but it seems like there are more this year.

Emmelina · 14/08/2021 00:04

A friend had this the other evening, too! Great if you have hedgehogs nearby, they’ll feast!
Wonder if a local wildlife rescue would welcome free food if you could tub some up? Wink

YNK · 14/08/2021 00:10

You can get slug nematodes on Amazon.

Nordicmom · 14/08/2021 00:10

Our puppy has been eating them for months but has finally had enough thank god . The stomach problems on and off we are blaming on all the random stuff outside he has tried to eat since when he had a cone on recently he was much better …

gardeninggirl68 · 14/08/2021 00:46
